1 SCHOOL-TIME PERFORMANCES rvccarts EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES IN EDUCATION prek - 12 rvcca rts The Theatre at RVCC Branchburg, NJ
2 Freedom Bound Mad River Theater Works Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 10AM Grades: 3+ Length: 50 min. CURR. CONNECTIONS: CL, MC, MU, SS The Underground Railroad was a network of friends who helped slaves escape to freedom in the North and on to Canada before the Civil War. This compelling original play with music tells the tale of one of the most important incidents in the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio: The story of Addison White, an escaped slave, and his rescue by the citizens of the town of Mechanicsburg. Freedom Bound uses drama, original songs, riddles and rhyme to create characters that emerge from the past to relive this turbulent period of history and bring the Underground Railroad to life right before your eyes. 42FT A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels Cirque Mechanics Friday, February 15, 2019 at 12PM Grades: 3+ LENGTH: 55 min. (40 minute performance followed by a 15 minute Q & A) CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS: S Step right up ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, to Cirque Mechanics world of gears and canvas, pulleys and sawdust! Inspired by modern circus, Cirque Mechanics, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories of American industrial ingenuity. Experience the American circus reinvented in timbers, steel and imagination, where ageless stories are spun in midair. Mechanical wonders include a rotating tent frame for strongmen, acrobats and aerialists, and a galloping mechanical horse. This performance has direct STEM to STEAM implications as it explores the engineering and math behind the construction and design of the machines. The decade that inspired the creators of 42ft was the 1930 s, when an unexpected stock-market crash in October of 1929 combined with the environmental disaster known as the Dust Bowl, which caused crops to fail as drought and corresponding dust choked the plains states, to create a period of unprecedented economic hardship in the United States. Many Americans were left homeless and hungry. The international economic slump in the 1930s created the discontent that would bring Hitler to power in Germany and sow the seeds of WWII. STUDY GUIDE
3 The Bright Siders Friday, February 22, 2019 at 10AM Grades: PreK+ LENGTH: 50 min. CURR. CONNECTIONS: RF, MU, CL The Bright Siders present music that helps kids and families have meaningful conversations about emotions. Created by award-winning songwriter Kristin Andreassen and Brooklyn child psychiatrist Dr. Kari Groff, the Bright Siders feature excellent musicianship and skillful audience engagement. Andreassen had a #1 kids radio hit with the infectiously rhythmic Crayola Doesn t Make a Color for Your Eyes, and Dr. Groff is well-known in NYC and beyond for her warm and genuine approach to young patients and for the joyful music she creates. Shaun Boothe Presents The Unauthorized Biography Series T h u r s d a y, F e b r u a r y 2 8, a t 1 2 P M G r a d e s : 4 + L E N G T H : 6 0 m i n. CURR. CONNECTIONS: CL, D, MU, MC, SS Award-winning hip hop artist Shaun Boothe motivates young audiences using rap songs that chronicle the extraordinary lives of cultural icons. His engaging take on the trails blazed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Mohammed Ali imbues students with the courage to find their own paths. By learning from the greats, students can examine their own strengths and goals, and take away actionable lessons with which to energize their lives. Boothe s unique presentation repackages history, infusing the greatest stories of our time with the contagious energy of hip hop. They Called Her Vivaldi Theatre Lovett Friday, March 15, 2019 at 10AM Grades: 2+ LENGTH: 60 min. CURR. CONNECTIONS: MU, SS, CL, RF Cecilia Maria is a sensitive musical prodigy making a quiet name for herself in a cacophonous world--until one night when her magical, musical hat, Capello, goes missing. Now she must venture out into the noisy city to track down the mysterious Cat Burglar. Along the way she meets a pizza maker with no saltshaker, a gondolier with no oar and a hairdresser with no scissors. Her adventure brings her face to face with the sneaky thief and a startling truth about herself. Part comedy, part thriller, this new production is full of beautiful music and hilarious characters, and celebrates the power within us all to follow our dreams.

Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly Dallas Children s Theater Monday, May 6, 2019 at 10AM Grades: PreK+ LENGTH: 70 min. CURR. CONN.: LB, LA, RF, MC, S, SS, MU Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly is the coolest ever rock-n-roll romp in a bug s world, capturing all the droll humor and whimsy of Doreen Cronin s wildly popular books. Insects rule in these diaries of unlikely best friends: Worm eats his homework, Fly believes she has superpowers, and Spider can t wait to grow up and molt. Promoting ecoconsciousness, earth science and tolerance of others, Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a Fly is a joyful, hip musical exploration of the world outside. You might just find that a bug s life is not all that different from your own!
