Students and teachers from Camden Hills went to see the famous play last January before its long run ended. Now only high schools have the go-ahead to enact the play. 2 Technical director Rick Ash said that as the group was headed down 5th Avenue in Manhattan just blocks from the Imperial, director Kim Murphy told everyone Les Mis was the play she'd selected for the next year. Ash said the play is his personal favorite; he has seen it 13 times. Les Miserables Recent Supplements All Supplements Other News Arts & Entertainment Births Business and Services Community Education Government Guest Column Obituaries Organization Real Estate Sports/Outdoors Ever since everyone saw that inspiring Broadway performance, planning has been going on. Students and various volunteers crafted the enormous, 32-foot turntable stage, which can now make approximately four rotations per minute. Designers first met in June and decided to build the revolving stage. Engineers, builders, carpenters and artists worked with students and helped with whatever arose in this creative, experiential learning environment. Preliminary engineering and design work went on throughout the summer. Once the set was finished, a team of people was chosen to run the show. Each performance takes more than 20 crew for make-up, lights, sound, props, scenery moving and operating the turntable. Ash said about 125 students, or roughly one sixth of the school's student population, are involved in the show. Backstage shot of students in the ABC Cafe scene. 3 It is clear that students are taking the production seriously. At a semi-dress rehearsal last Thursday, kids kept focused in what seemed a melee of scenes and stage directions. Actors, crew and pit orchestra players all had their ears peeled for directions. Extras played cards, but quietly. Many sat in auditorium seats close to the onstage action in rapt attention. Murphy wore a wireless microphone and brought the teenagers and younger children closer to the professionalism expected of opening night. When she spoke, they jumped--but out of respect and interest in the project. The actors and singers, from baritones to sopranos, wore additional wireless microphones onstage. Voices were strikingly strong, with good projection and tonality. Not only are these kids talented and fun to watch, they are having fun getting immersed in the creative process. They are learning to push their ambition, reach for one another as team members, and memorize lines, lyrics and music. The project is extraordinary. It is not a regular high school play production, by any means, but it is happening at Camden Hills. Be part of the audience.
