6 Grit Fest To coincide with GRIT: The Martyn Bennett Story we have curated Grit Fest; a special series of performances of musicians that worked with and were inspired by Martyn and his music. The musicians performing on Mull over Grit weekend have been chosen because of their connections with Martyn. Lau s fiddle player Aidan O Rourke included a beautiful piece called One For Martyn on his 2007 solo album commissioned by An Tobar. Much of that record was written by Aidan in the studio in An Tobar where Martyn used to work. Lau will be supported by Skye singer/songwriter Hector MacInnes, who recently won the Martyn Bennett commission award at the Queen s Hall in Edinburgh. Mr McFall s Chamber will be playing Birds & Beasts, the music of Martyn Bennett arranged by Robert McFall, demonstrating the extent to which Martyn was respected in the world of contemporary classical music. Young Lewis musician Mischa MacPherson brings her trio fresh from their appearance at the Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall where they were given the Young Folk Award. Martyn was always a great supporter of young musicians and the music from the Gaelic heartlands. India Alba, a Scotland/India collaboration, features the outstanding young piper Ross Ainslie, spotted by Martyn and tipped for a great career in music. Martyn also loved the tonality of Indian music. Mull musician Sorren Maclean was inspired by Martyn as a teenager, and played electric guitar on the Grit track Liberation. 6 Grit Fest Box Office

8 Mr McFall s Chamber Fri 20 June An Tobar 10pm 10/ 8 Lau and Hector MacInnes Thurs 19 June Aros Hall Tobermory 8.30pm 14/ 12 Lau have picked up three consecutive BBC Folk Awards for Best Group ( ) with their take on modern folk music. Their sound is a collective musical journey that retains all the strengths of the original acoustic trio (Kris Drever vocals/guitar, Martin Green accordion, Aidan O Rourke fiddle). Lau refer to Martyn Bennett and his musical output as legendary. As Aiden O Rouke explains, We are lucky in this world of folk to have had many great visionaries which means the music evolves and progresses with a keen eye on what s gone before. This generation had Martyn Bennett. Respect. Liberation. Renowned for their innovative approach to programming and their informal take on classical music, Mr McFall s Chamber. They weave through tango and jazz to rock and contemporary classical, taking in quite a lot more besides. The strings of Mr McFall s are joined by Fraser Fifield (pipes/whistles), Paul Harrison (piano), Tom Bancroft and James Mackintosh (percussion), and they will be performing Martyn s music as recorded shortly after his death on the Birds & Beasts album. potentially the most important single development on the Scottish music scene for a long time Herald India Alba Sat 21 June An Tobar 10pm 10/ 8 A collaboration between two Indian and two Scottish musicians creating a unique sound. Since their debut album Reels and Ragas, they have developed a sound which reflects the broad common ground between their traditions. Many themes (raga gats), particularly those from the borders of the Himalayas, have close relatives in the melodies of the highlands and islands. For both, sounds of the bagpipes or the tampura play an important part. India Alba performed recently at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Delhi International Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Indian Music Conference Goa and the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. 8 Grit Fest Box Office

14 Uncle Varick Rapture Theatre Sat 24 May Druimfin 8pm 9/ 6 What happens when the rock and roll of swinging 60s London collides with the rock and moss of remote Scotland? Sandy Sheridan: pretentious art critic and self-proclaimed cultural icon returns from London, and home to his Scottish country pile with his new, much younger, wife in tow. Waiting for him are his stoical daughter Shona and his acerbic ex-brother in law: Uncle Varick. John Byrne s raucous adaptation of Chekov s classic Uncle Vanya, relocated to 1960s rural Scotland, is full of comedy, pathos, and some very dodgy chainsaws. 18 Kris Drever Thurs 15 May Bunessan Hall 8.30pm Fri 16 May An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 He may be best-known as the guitarist with the bravely experimental trio Lau (who have been crowned Best Group three times now at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards), but Orcadian Kris Drever s voice and guitar forms part of the backbone of today s contemporary roots scene and stands on its own ground. Equally admired as a solo artist and as a musical collaborator with Donald Shaw, Roddy Woomble, Kate Rusby and Eddie Reader to name but a few, Kris s individualistic, genre-cutting guitar style and expressive, sturdy vocals are both authentic, masterful and full of integrity. 22 Amy Duncan Tues 29 July An Tobar 8.30pm 10/ 8 Amy s career as a performer and song-writer hasn t exactly followed a conventional path. She began her career playing double bass, but motherhood inspired her into song writing; a fortuitous turn of events that has really seen her find her niche. Infinite Reflections drew inspiration from memories, and cultural references that resonated with Lyall, exploring experiences of friendship, adventure, surrealism, love, loss, determination, grit and happiness. 25 Lauren Godfrey: Stovies, Scallops & Scabby Man s Heads Until Sat 17 May Gallery, An Tobar SCALLOPS, THREE WAYS Comar presents an exhibition and new commission by artist Lauren Godfrey. Godfrey combines objects, text and performance to address the discrepancy between the visual and the verbal in art. Food and food culture are themes she often returns to in her work, and in this, her first solo show in Scotland, she foregrounds these gourmet motifs in her choice of exhibition title. In Stovies, Scallops & Scabby Man s Heads (the name her Shetlander father gave to sea urchins) the artist explores the notions of rocks and islands and their relationship to stepping-stones, seafood and full stops. These metaphorical leaps between landscape, language and larder find their feet in the gallery where the artist s soundworks and objects climb the walls and stretch across the floor in an archipelago of sculpture. To coincide with her exhibition at An Tobar, Godfrey has been commissioned to create three new lino floor designs to remain permanently in the building. We see in them glimpses of the artist s cultural experiences of the island and its produce, images and sentences imbued with her own sense of exuberance and good humour. 26 Ilana Halperin: Learning To Read Rocks Generation Thurs 29 May Sat 26 July Opening night Thurs 29 May, 6pm 8pm Gallery, An Tobar A new exhibition by Glasgow-based artist, Ilana Halperin. Following a series of research visits to the island, Halperin has found herself embarking on a rock hunt of sorts: from the world-renowned Tormore granite quarry near Fionnphort on Mull and a rumoured pier on Manhattan Island, to a stretch of melted rocks in Iona and a geothermal pool, aptly named Bloody Pond Hell. Her journey has resulted in a series of brand new artworks for Comar, exhibited at the gallery at An Tobar, where old and young rock will meet. As part of Generation, celebrating 25 years of contemporary Scottish art. Rachel Maclean: The Weepers Thurs 7 Aug 27 Sept 2014 Opening night Thurs 7 Aug, 6pm 8pm Gallery, An Tobar The Weepers is a new solo exhibition by Glasgow-based artist Rachel Maclean that reinterprets Scottish fairy and folk tale to explore themes of phantasy and gender. In this show, Maclean will present a new short film work that examines the legend of the Bean Nighe or Washer Woman, a monstrous and ominous spirit that is tasked with ringing out blood from the grave clothes of people who are close to death. Shot in various locations on Mull, as well as making use of greenscreen technology, the piece will present a darkly comic and synthetically maximal exploration of the feminine grotesque. 26 Exhibitions Box Office
