1 ABOUT US MEMBERSHIP THE CLARINET JOURNAL COMPETITIONS ARCHIVES & LINKS ICA E-Newsletter Winter 2014 The ICA E-Newsletter includes news items of interest to clarinet players as well as information about upcoming events and opportunities within the field. For publication consideration please submit news items to ClarinetFest 2014 In This Issue Coming Events In the News Appointments It's time to volunteer! We're on target to have one of our largest conferences ever, and we need support from dedicated members like you. The benefits of becoming a conference volunteer extend beyond your complementary registration. It's a great opportunity to meet artists from all over the world, make new friends and engage with those who love our profession. Volunteers are expected to work hours during the course of the event and be available from Tuesday afternoon through Sunday in exchange for a complimentary registration. Many different shifts and duties are available - if you have a special skill, please let us know! The volunteer program is open to current members of ICA. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Cassie Keogh at cassiekeogh@gmail.com by April 15, 2014 to be considered for this program. Coming Events The 10th International Competition "Young Virtuosos" will place March in Sofia, Bulgaria. The competition is organized annually and takes place in the New Concert Hall of the National School of Music, with the assistance of the Board of trustees and the exclusive support of the America for Bulgaria Foundation. 2 Deutschen Klarinetten-Gesellschaft will host Bassklarinetten- Szene D at the Grassi Museum for Music Instruments in Leipzig February Click here for more information. The European Clarinet Association Clarinet Congress will take place December 11-13, The main goal of the 4th European Clarinet Congress is to present the clarinet as a universal instrument as it is present in classical, jazz, klezmer, folk as well as in many more music styles. Highlights of the Congress include gala concerts, recitals, lectures, exhibitions and master classes. ECA president Stephan Vermeersch (stephan@stephanto become a member today! The Midwest Clarifest will be held on April 5 at the University of Nebraska. The festival will include recital performances, master classes, a reading session and lecture recitals. Featured guest artists will include Robert Walzel and Gary Whitman. Click here for more information. The Blue Clarinet Day will take place on February 9 in Splendor, Amsterdam. The festival will feature more then twenty guests including: Ab Baars, Raluca Baicu, Oguz Buyukberber, Rachel Deloughry, Yedo Gibson, Hans Hylkema, Steven Kamperman, Bart de Kater, Tobias Klein, David Kweksilber, Cătălin Milea, Michael Moore, Folkert Oosting, Maarten Ornstein, John Ruocco, Fie Schouten, Alex Simu, Ziv Taubenfeld, Jaïr Tchong, Tini Thomsen, Emirhan Tuga, as well as the New Amsterdam Clarinet Quartet. Click here for more information. The Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition will be held March 29. Finalists are selected based on audition recordings to compete in the historic Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland. The Gold Medalist will be further honored with additional concerts including an appearance at the Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival in June and a generous cash prize. Don't Opt Out! Hülsta-Werke from Stadtlohn and the GWK-Gesellschaft für Westfälische Kulturarbeit from Münster in Germany will host the International Woodwind Competition Hülsta Woodwinds, which is aimed at highly talented young woodwind players. Hülsta Woodwinds will take place March 26-30, 2014 in the Academy of Music in Münster. Click here for more information. The 2014 National Collegiate Solo Competition, hosted by the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" is accepting applicants. In the News Northwestern University Library is pleased to announce that the Robert Marcellus Audio Archive will be one of the first collections to be made available in the Northwestern Audio + Video Repository. The Robert Marcellus Audio Archive contains recorded master classes held at Northwestern University from 1977 through Northwestern's Audio + Video Repository will allow access to the collection via streaming audio. This represents a great leap forward in the preservation and availability of this incredibly important resource. Click here to visit the archive. Raphaël Sévère French clarinetist Raphaël Sévère recently was selected as a First Prize Winner of the 2013 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in Merkin Hall. The event drew over two hundred musicians from thirty-five countries. As a first prizewinner he will present recitals in New York at Merkin Hall, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and in Boston at the Isabella Steward Garner Museum. Eddie Daniels Clarinetist Eddie Daniels' recording "Duke at the Roadhouse Live in Santa Fe" has been awarded the Grand Prix de l'académie du Jazz. The award recognizes the best record of the year in France. The album was recorded live at a benefit concert in New Mexico for a group called "Santa Fe Center for Therapeutic Riding" which utilizes horses to help young people with disabilities. Passages Koichi Hamanaka passed away on November 7th, 2013 at the age of 76 after a long fight with cancer. He was a longtime member of the International Clarinet Association and a friend to many. He had been an active performing clarinetist, a leader in the Japanese clarinet world and a mentor to many clarinetists. He served as principal clarinetist of the New Hong Kong Symphony and was one of the founders of the Japan Clarinet Association. 6/7
