We are pleased to offer you the education programs of the Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra all in one brochure! There are so many choices. Browse through all we have to offer and choose a complete arts experience for your students. There are both In- School performances and Field Trip opportunities for students of all ages. Nothing can duplicate experiencing live performances. Give your students the gift of the arts while also helping them see how the arts are an integral part of school curriculum. 3 In-School Programs Preschool, Primary, K-3 Ensemble and Docent Programs It s just plain fun! Our ensembles tell engaging children s stories with music. Many of your students may never have seen a violin (or the Three Pigs for that matter) in person. These programs absolutely captivate young listeners. All ensembles can present up to four performances per day. String Quartet Goldilocks and The Three Bears Your students will be entranced as they participate in this classic tale told with music. Discover what Goldilocks needs to learn about being a good family member. Preschool & K-1 The Three Little Pigs Another classic unfolds in this unique and interactive performance. Your students will learn about music and some valuable lessons about friendship. Preschool & K-1 Land of XYZ Four very different dinosaurs wish they could be someone else until they work together to solve a problem. Your students will discover that their unique characteristics and abilities are important to their community. Preschool & K-1 Cost: $175 per performance Performance Time: 30 minutes DPO Trio Wee 3 A string bass, a trumpet, and percussion! What could these instruments possibly have in common? Find out as the trio explores likenesses, differences, and teamwork. Grades K-2 Docent Program The Orchestra and You We know they d rather run and jump all over the concert hall, but we think we ve got a compromise: get these kids physically involved with music. They become the orchestra. They watch for direction, and they play imaginary instruments. This audiovisual introduction to the symphony orchestra is perfect preparation for attending a live orchestra performance. We recommend a lively audience of Grade 2 Dates: October-April Cost: Free Dayton Opera Guild Opera Marionettes The Opera Guild of Dayton pulls the strings as large animated marionettes dressed as characters from favorite operas make the conductor, singers and musical instruments come to life. Audience size of up to 50 students. Grades Preschool-Grade 2 Dates: October-November, 2013 and April-May, 2014 Location: Your school Cost: $25 per performance Performance Time: 30 minutes

4 Intermediate Grades 3-6 Ensemble Programs Kids have so many questions about musical instruments. This is their chance to fire away, while learning how music relates to history, science, social studies, and everyday life. Choose the programs which best suit your needs. What a great opportunity to see and talk with professional musicians up close and in person, hear wonderful music, and learn a lot too! Brass Quintet Who Is the Brass Family? Lively music, an entertaining introduction to the instruments in a brass quintet and a little science too! Grades 2-6 Music Around the World Language, dress, and customs, all combine to define a culture, but what is missing from this list? Music, of course! Take a musical journey and discover the unique characteristics of music from around the world. Grades 3-6 Music of Our Time Explore the music of the twentieth century as the quintet leads your students through significant events of our time as illustrated in music from various decades of the twentieth century. Grades 4-6 String Quintet String Instrument Demonstration (The Science of String Sound) Who is in the string family and how do string instruments work? How many ways can string instruments produce a sound? Discover the answers to these questions as the quintet performs a wide variety of musical styles. Grades 1-5 Music for the Dance Music must be organized, especially when it involves dance! Students will learn how form, patterns, and rhythm combine to create characteristic dance styles from around the world. Grades 3-8 Where in Europe Is? Test your students map reading skills. The quintet will play music from various European countries and enlist volunteers from the audience to demonstrate their map reading skills. Grades 3-8 DPO Trio American Vignettes American Vignettes was composed especially for the DPO Trio by Cincinnati composer, Joe Price. From New Orleans to the Wild West, this lively presentation takes your students on a musical journey across the U.S. Grades 1-5 Music Around the World (with a surprise!) After a speedy trip around the world to discover how music reflects the culture of its people, your students will arrive in an American classroom to meet the Creatures in Room 642 by Cincinnati composer, Frank Proto. Here they will learn how music not only describes a culture, but also reveals the individuals (and other creatures) in it! Grades 4-8 Woodwind Quintet Woodwind Instrument Demonstration Why is the flute in a woodwind quintet if it s made out of metal, and how does that French horn fit in? Discover the answer and see the exotic materials from faraway places that are used to make these instruments. Each has a distinctive sound, yet all blend together to make the unique sound of the woodwind quintet! Grades 1-5 Where in the World Is...? Follow musical clues from Europe to the Far East to South America and Africa to discover the unique musical sounds of countries around the world. This program will reinforce your students listening and map reading skills. Grades 4-6 Bach, Beethoven and Beyond! The quintet looks back over the years leading to the millennium by presenting a kaleidoscope of tunes, both serious and light-hearted, that have brought us to the present time. Grades 6-12

5 OPERA Education Program Underwriters Children s Traveling Opera Students are the stars of their own mini-opera in this nationally renowned program. An entire opera team brings the Barber of Seville to your school. Grades 3-6 Dates: TBD Location: Your school Cost: $100 per performance Opera on the Road Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing Opera is a powerful medium for learning across the curriculum. This highly entertaining and interactive program features four young charismatic singers who reveal Sid s journey of self-discovery. Grade K-6 Dates: March 17-April 9, 2014 Location: Your school Cost: $350 secondary Grades 9-12 Ensembles Mentoring: Masters who train apprentices. That s what this is all about. 6 FIeld Trip Programs Primary Grades K-3 Magic Carpet Concerts Once Upon a Time These concerts are designed for our youngest audience members! We ll perform orchestral music in a casual and fun manner. Students will learn how music can tell a story without any words as dancers from Dayton Ballet II join the orchestra to present the classic tale, Peter and the Wolf. DATES: March 19, 20, 21, 2014 TIME: 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. Location: Masonic Center Cost: $4.00 per seat Intermediate Grades 4-7 Young People s Concerts One of the DPO s longest-standing traditions! These concerts give students the opportunity to hear the exciting sounds of a full orchestra in the acoustically perfect while also learning how music connects to many areas of their classroom curriculum. Teachers receive a study guide and a CD of concert excerpts. At no charge, docents (if available) come to your school to prepare students for the concert. Musical Postcards from America Take a musical journey highlighting the natural beauty, innovators and immigrants of our rich American culture. Conductor: Patrick Reynolds Curriculum Connections: Language Arts, Music and Social Studies Rhythms of Africa Come celebrate the influence of the distinctive rhythms of Africa on many symphonic composers. Students will hear authentic African drummers as well as exciting orchestral pieces composed in the African music tradition. Conductors: Neal Gittleman and Patrick Reynolds Curriculum Connections: Language Arts, Music and Social Studies Dates: November 12, 2013 Musical Postcards from America March 12, 2014 Rhythms of Africa Times: 9:30 and 11:20 am Location: Cost: $5.00 per seat Dayton Ballet Young Audience Program In these engaging concerts students are introduced to the many different dance styles that make up the world of ballet. Dancers visit your school prior to the concert to prepare the students for the performance. Grades 2-6 Dates: April 2, 3, 4, 2014 Times: 10:00 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Location: Masonic Center Cost: $3.00 secondary Grades 6 through College Open Rehearsals The Dayton Opera Guild Student Dress Rehearsal, hosted by the Dayton Opera Guild, is open to junior high through college-age students for the final rehearsal of Dayton Opera s production of Tosca. 7 Secondary Grades 6-12 Individual Participation Dayton Philharmonic Youth Strings This orchestra was established to provide an exceptional musical experience for talented young string students throughout the greater Dayton area. The musicians perform two concerts a year. Performers: Grades 6-12 Conductor: Betsey Hofeldt Date: November 17, 2013 Fall Concert Location: Dayton Art Institute Cost: $8 Adults, $5 Seniors Time: 1:30 pm Date: March 16, 2014 Spring Concert Location: Masonic Center Cost: $5 All Seats Time: 7:00 pm extra-curricular Programs Betsey Hofeldt DPYS Conductor Competitions Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra David L. Pierson Young Musicians Concerto Competition The winner of this competition receives a $500 cash award and is the featured soloist with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra at a Young People s Concert during the season. Grades: 9 11 Applications for this competition will be mailed to your music department in mid-winter. Dayton Opera Guild Annual High School Vocal Competition Open to juniors and seniors from Ohio. $1350 in awards will be given. Place and date TBA. The Tri-State College and Vocal Competition Annually awards $6350 to outstanding vocalists. Students from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky are eligible to enter. Place and date TBA. Members study challenging orchestral music, Patrick Reynolds work with professional musicians, DPYO Conductor and perform three concerts a year in the magnificent.
