2 MALAYSIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August With the initial search for outstanding musicians involving a worldwide audition tour, the result was a symphony orchestra made up of musicians from 25 nations, including 6 from Malaysia, a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities. A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has performed with the MPO including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Chris Botti and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical qualities and vitality. With each new season, the MPO continues to present an exciting programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series. Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz, traditional, contemporary and commissioned works. The MPO regularly performs at major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has showcased its virtuosity to audiences in Singapore (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2018), Japan (2001, 2009 and 2017), Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007) and Vietnam (2013). Its Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness and appreciation through dedicated activities at such diverse venues as schools, colleges, hospitals, orphanages and other community centres. The MPO s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO); its inaugural concert at DFP on 25 August 2007 was followed by a tour in Peninsular Malaysia. It has performed in Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009 and 2017), Brisbane, Australia (2012), Kedah (2013) and Johor Bahru (2014). The MPO has also released 21 commercial CDs. As it celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018, the MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music. 3 AHMAD MURIZ CHE ROSE conductor Hailing from Penang, Ahmad Muriz Che Rose has excelled in music since his school days in Penang Free School where he performed with the school s military band and Penang Combined School Symphonic Band. He completed his compositional studies at The Boston Conservatory, obtained his Bachelors Degree in Music from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and the Berklee College of Music, majoring in Film Scoring. He has performed at various domestic and international art and culture festivals in Indonesia, Singapore, France and the USA. In 1993, Muriz spearheaded a local jazz fusion group called Tamingsari at the KL International Jazz Festival. Notable accomplishments includes appointment as Associate Music Director for Saidah Rastam s M! The Opera, the first production of Malaysian opera, staged at Istana Budaya. Muriz has conducted the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) for Keroncong Merdeka (2012) and MPO Rocks (2013) at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP). He also conducted the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) at the Merdeka Award concerts and the opening ceremony of the International Olympic Committee Session in A collaboration between KRU Studios and the MPO saw the epitome of Muriz s compositional career as he was given the privilege to arrange live music score for the epic movie Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa in In 2014 and 2015, he was Music Director for the Malam Terang Bulan showcases at DFP. Currently, Muriz is the Head of MPYO while also arranging orchestral works and performing with renowned local artists such as Anuar Zain, Siti Nurhaliza, Sheila Majid, Jamal Abdillah and Ning Baizura. AISHAH Wan Aishah Wan Ariffin, more famously known as Aishah, has been in the music industry for more than 30 years. She stormed into the music scene as the front person for a New Zealand based pop group, The Fan Club, in 1987 when she was an undergraduate at the University of Auckland. The group was hailed Best International Artiste at the New Zealand Music Award in Its single Don t Let Me Fall Alone composed by Dianne Warren charted the US Billboard Charts in The group s second album, Respect The Beat, released in 1990, enjoyed chart successes in New Zealand and Malaysia, and climbed the US Billboard Chart Top 100. Aishah launched a successful solo career in 1990 with her debut album Aishah, followed by a string of hit albums. She has won many local music awards such as Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian s first Most Popular Artiste, Anugerah Industri Muzik s Best Female Vocals and was crowned the champion for Astro s Gegar Vaganza in She has performed with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Irama Warisan Kita concerts at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in Aside from her music career, Aishah is also an avid visual artist and crafter, attending arts conventions and workshops around the world. LIZA HANIM Haliza Hanim Abd Halim, better known as Liza Hanim, is a Malaysian singer and actress. Born in 1979, her music talent was discovered by legendary composer Adnan Abu Hassan when she participated in a television talent programme Golden Teen Search in 1996 when she was 17. Liza has recorded 7 albums, acted in 2 movies and in P Ramlee The Musical theatre for two seasons (2007 and 2008). She has received numerous nominations at local music awards events and won Bintang Penghibur HMI (1999), Silver Prize at Shanghai Music Festival (2001), Best Vocal award at 17th Anugerah Juara Lagu (2002), Anugerah Personaliti Hiburan (2002), Video Muzik Pilihan ERA (2004) and became the first runner-up at Astro s Gegar Vaganza (2017). After several years taking a backseat and running her own company as CEO of LH Media Sdn. Bhd., Liza is now making a comeback in showbusiness.

4 RACHEL GUERZO Jazz pianist and singer Rachel Guerzo studied at Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts. Born into Malaysia s most influential music family, the Solianos, this granddaughter of Alfonso Soliano has emerged as one of the most exciting and innovative jazz musicians in her own right; honing her art and cementing her reputation by playing to discerning live audiences over the past two decades. A fluid pianist with a rich and sultry voice to match, a charming personality with a great sense of humour, Rachel is a naturally gifted entertainer. Her most unique ability to breathe new arrangements to popular jazz standards, R&B and chart topping tunes is her winning trademark. Rachel has worked with fine musicians such as Jeremy Monteiro, Michael Veerapen, Pascoal Mirelles, Steve Thornton, Valtinho Anastascio, Lewis Pragasam and Farid Ali. PROGRAMME NOTES This year, Malaysia celebrates 61 years of independence. Together with a stellar cast of singers, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) commemorates Malaysia Day (celebrated on 16 September) with concerts themed Semalam Di Malaya (A Night In Malaya). Paying tribute to musical icons of yesteryear, their landmark compositions will be given a well-deserved orchestral grandeur treatment. The symphonic arrangements, specially created for this concert, aim not only to enhance and preserve the beauty of the Malaysian works but also to bring the often forgotten creators of these works - the composers - to the forefront. In the 1950s, an elevated demand for musicians at Radio Malaya and films saw many regional and local talents flourish in this country. Indonesian Ahmad Jaafar s impact was transitory in Malaya while Singaporean Alfonso Soliano s musical dynasty passed down through his generations in Malaysia. During the time of independence, nationalistic songs written by luminaries such as Ahmad Merican, Jimmy Boyle, Saiful Bahri and Zubir Said fostered a patriotic spirit, while versatile icon P Ramlee, on the other hand, had a different musical direction as he approached music from a film point of view as well as a singer and songwriter. Having recently produced a various artiste album Alfonso 25, a resume that include a sell-out concert at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS in 2010 and 2 solo albums that garnered local and international buzz, Rachel continues to strengthen her portfolio and remain relevant to the regional jazz circuit. MUSLY RAMLEE Musly Amir Mohamed Ramli or Musly Ramlee is a singer, film and theatre actor, host and scriptwriter. His career took off in 1990 with the release of his debut album Benarkah Cinta under the EMI label. He was involved in album productions, films, television, and has performed in Brunei, Istanbul and Macao. He was the lead actor in P Ramlee The Musical theatre in 2008 presented at Istana Budaya and The Esplanade, Singapore. On the right, Saiful Bahri with saxophone. star2.com Semalam Di Malaya is a popular 1961 song composed by Indonesian Saiful Bahri, who also wrote the lyrics to our national anthem, Negaraku. Originally sung by Tuty Daulay, this song is a relaxed and lovely keroncong melody over an asli beat that depicts a lonely warrior who lost his beloved after he returned to Malaya. Saiful s rousing march-like Berjaya which portrays a united and independent Malaysia is the first part of a medley that appends the dramatic Perajurit Tanah Air, which extols our soldiers love and call of duty to defend our country s sovereignty. Musly has shared his expertise with choir groups and students of Akademi Fantasia. He has performed in a P Ramlee-themed concert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and was part of Malam Terang Bulan concert at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, and also another P Ramlee concert at Auditorium DBKL.

5 rilek1corner.com Singaporean Zubir Said is honoured in this concert with two songs; Sayang Di Sayang, a lovelorn ballad made popular by singer Kartina Dahari, and Setangkai Kembang Melati, a slow and wistful tune about a beautiful jasmine flower, originally sung as a duet by Abdullah Chik and Jamaliah Shariff. thestar.com Penang-born jazz composer Jimmy Boyle s evergreen song Jauh Jauh expresses a personal longing towards something far away. This song has been re-interpreted by singers such as Ahmad Jais, Rachel Guerzo and Sean Ghazi. Next, Boyle s lightly scored Putera Puteri, which reflects on building up our nation, and Chendering, which depicts a lovely beach in Terengganu, form an enchanting medley. poskod.my We celebrate Alfonso Soliano, the doyen of the Soliano family of musicians, with a delightful medley of Airmata Berderai where the loss of a beloved is recompensed by discovering an enamoured girl of the guy s dream in Gadis Idaman. Another Alfonso s love song, Tunas Kasih, depicts aspirations that budding love can only flourish. buro247.my P Ramlee s Hujan Di Tengahari expresses regret over a loved one s wanton pleasures. Next is Joget Malaysia, an undulating duet written in the traditional Malay 'joget' style sung by P Ramlee and his wife Saloma. P Ramlee s serene Nak Dara Rindu from the 1957 comedy film Bujang Lapok, the plaintive tune Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti from the 1962 melodramatic film Ibu Mertuaku and the rousing Kwek Mambo, inspired by his good friend Kwek Chip Jian, form another sumptuous medley of stirring creativity. star2.com In 1963, Radio Malaya s Ahmad Merican penned one of the all-time classic and favourite Malaysian nationalistic works entitled Tanah Pusaka, a flowing and beautiful song that nurtures patriotism. This work is also included in this programme.
