8 SPEECH & DRAMA ADJUDICATORS STEPHEN OWEN BA(Hons), BA(Ed), MA, MEd, FRSA, FLCM, LRAM, LGSM, LLAM Stephen Owen trained as teacher of Drama, Speech and Movement at Trinity and All Saints College, University of Leeds. After qualifying, he studied with Eleanor Rutherford for a number of years, gaining specialist diplomas in the teaching and performance of all aspects of Speech and Drama Studies. As well as being responsible for drama at the schools in which he worked, he also taught pupils of all ages and abilities privately, from complete beginners to Licentiate (RAM) and Fellowship (LAM). For a time he was also voice coach to undergraduate students at The College of Ripon and York St John who were experiencing difficulties in the classroom situation. He became an examiner for The English Speaking Board and The Poetry Society and also enjoyed adjudicating at many festivals throughout the country. In April 1985 he was appointed to the headship of a primary school in Derbyshire, which inevitably meant less time for examining and adjudicating. It was during this time that he also became a a Religious Education inspector for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hallam. Since retiring from headship in July 2007, he has been appointed as an examiner for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and has resumed work as a Adjudicator Member of the British and International Federation of Festivals. Whilst he enjoyed headship very much indeed, he is delighted once again to be part of a creative rather than bureaucratic world. When not examining or adjudicating, Stephen s leisure time consists of seeing as many plays and operas as possible and teaching his young grandchildren to swim. CAROL SCHRODER LLAM, AISTD, PGCE, MSTSD From an early age Carol trained in all aspects of performing arts including drama, dance and singing. She worked in the professional theatre, television and in cabaret where she produced her own one woman show. Carol gained teaching qualifications in speech and drama and then taught at drama schools and colleges including for twenty-two years at the Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts. Carol has been an examiner for LAMDA for 36 years both in the UK and overseas. She has written and contributed to several LAMDA text books and is actively involved in the setting of the various syllabuses. Carol is a long standing member of The British and International Federation of Festivals adjudicating throughout the UK and overseas and currently sits on the adjudicator s council. Carol enjoys teaching young children where English is their second language and those with special needs. She also lectures on presentational skills to adults in commerce and industry and served as a trustee of Voice Care Network UK a charity promoting care of the voice in the workplace. Carol is pleased to see a number of her past pupils achieving success on the West End stage, in BBC and other television productions and the film industry and indeed taking up careers as teachers themselves. MUSIC ADJUDICATORS DANIEL CHANDLER BMus (Hons), MA Daniel received his early musical education on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire. After studying in Manchester, he was awarded a place at the Royal College of Music in London where he studied with the renowned flautist and teacher, Susan Milan. As well as gaining a degree from the RCM, Daniel has a teaching qualification from Edge Hill University and a Master s Degree in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Warwick. Daniel has given many solo and chamber music recitals for societies and festivals around the UK. He has also taught and coached chamber music at different venues, which include the Royal Northern College of Music, Dillington Festival in Somerset and the University of North Texas in the USA. For several years Daniel performed as part of an ensemble for the Live Music Now scheme, promoting the experience of live music amongst people who would not normally have access to it. Concerts and workshops were presented at a variety of community venues, which included schools, hospitals and hospices. He also performed as an orchestral musician with the Lancashire Sinfonietta and in various touring productions in theatres and concert halls across the UK. 6

9 Daniel is currently Director of Music at AKS, which is a leading co-educational independent school, situated in Lytham St. Annes. He is fortunate to work in a thriving Music Department and currently directs the AKS Choral Society, School Choir, Girls Choir and a successful Swing Band. Recent concerts have included performances in Salzburg Cathedral, a tour to the Rhine valley in Germany, as well as at other venues around the north west of England. Next July, he will direct three concerts in New York, including a performance in St. Paul's Chapel next to Ground Zero. Daniel still manages to find time to continue performing, deliver workshops and adjudicate as a member of the British and International Federation of Festivals. JULIA DEWHURST FTCL, ARCM, PGCA, Cert Ed, FRSA Julia Dewhurst s extensive performing career has encompassed opera, concert and recital repertoire from Early Music to first performances of contemporary works. A lyric-coloratura soprano, she has appeared with the Royal Opera, English National Opera, Kent Opera, Pavilion Opera, English Touring Opera, European Chamber Opera, London Opera Players and with the Garden Opera Company. She has broadcast for BBC TV and Radio and has sung in many of the country s leading concert venues as well as having undertaken concert and opera engagements throughout Europe. She has also fulfilled engagements in the Seychelles Festival of Classical Music and has twice visited the Middle East, where she gave recitals and master classes under the auspices of the British Council. Julia has extensive teaching experience across the entire age range and has been a much sought-after vocal adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals for more than 14 years. She is a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, the Association of the Teachers of Singing, the British Voice Association and is a Friend of the Society of the Teachers of the Alexander Technique. JOHN FOSTER GNSM, LRAM, PGCE, FISM John Foster studied piano with Kendall Taylor at what is now the Royal Northern College of Music. This was followed by a post-graduate year at Manchester University and it was during this year that he gave his first professional solo recitals. In addition to solo work, John has performed extensively as accompanist with singers and instrumentalists, in chamber groups, including the Lydian Trio, and as official accompanist in national and international masterclasses. Although most of his recital work has been in the UK, he has performed in Jersey, France, Germany, and Hong Kong, where has also given radio broadcasts. For sixteen years John was a staff member at the RNCM Junior College and for eighteen years was a Director of the St. Cecilia Chamber Music Trust. He conducted the St. Cecilia Youth Chamber Orchestra in venues throughout the UK, including the RNCM and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. John is a grade and diploma examiner, trainer and moderator for ABRSM. He has also worked as a theory examiner, a member of the interview panel for new examiners and a seminar presenter. His ABRSM activities have taken him to all parts of the UK and to Australia, Bermuda, China, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Tenerife, Thailand and USA. DANIEL HOWARD BMus (Hons), DipRam, LRAM, LTCL, LGSM Daniel Howard studied piano and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and graduated with a first class honours degree and diploma of advanced studies. As a pianist he was much in demand playing many concertos and recitals. However, it is as an opera singer that he has made his career, singing many main roles throughout Europe. Most recently he performed the role of Governor Albert Frank in Die Fledermaus at the Royal Albert Hall in a special gala performance with Kiri te Kanawa and Jose Carreras. Other roles of note have included Papageno, Guglielmo, Tarquinius and Belcore which he has sung for companies such as English Touring Opera, Latvian State Opera, Hermitage Theatre, St Petersburg, and Diva Opera. In demand as an oratorio singer, he has sung most of the standard repertoire at many UK venues. 7

10 JOHN POWELL MA(Cantab), Cert Ed, ARCM Born in London and educated at Cambridge University, John Powell has spent much of his life in Manchester. His musical activities have always centred around choirs and singers and he devotes his time to conducting, singing and teaching. Until 1988 he was Head of Choral Music at Chetham s School of Music. He now teaches privately and at the University of York. He is also very active as a Festival adjudicator. For fifteen years John was Director of the Bolton Chamber Choir as well as a frequent Guest Conductor with Fleetwood Choral Society. His own chamber choir, the John Powell Singers, is heard regularly on BBC Radio and has toured throughout Europe and recently visited Iceland. In 2005 he took up an appointment as Musical Director of the Tatton Singers in Cheshire. John also directs choral workshops and conducts Bolton Festival Choir as well as training choirs for special events. Recent major projects have included The Dream of Gerontius at the RNCM, new commissions for the Bolton Festival Choir and Tatton Singers and training the chorus for Belshazzar s Feast at the Bridgewater Hall. A member of the BBC Northern Singers since 1975, and a founder-member of the Britten Singers, John has sung on Radio, TV and disc, and at the Proms, Aldeburgh and Harrogate Festivals as well as touring extensively abroad. He performs in recitals and oratorio and particularly enjoys exploring new and unusual repertoire. In 2010, the two hundredth anniversary of Robert Schumann's birth, his recitals (with pianist Russell Lomas) included performances of Dichterliebe and Liederkreis. More recent programmes have featured rare songs by Liszt and Wagner and composers associated with the First World War. ANGELA ROWLEY BA (Hons), PGCE, ARCM, MISM Angela, a graduate in German from University College, London, followed a career in teaching before embarking on voice training with Keiran McNiff and working subsequently with many eminent teachers including the late Paul Hamburger. Angela s first experiences of public performance were at school, at Music Festivals and in choral societies. She encourages her pupils to enter festivals for the opportunity to perform, hear peers and receive professional critique. Her hopes are that the experience will be challenging, educational and fun! She performs regularly in recital, concert and oratorio and has an extensive repertoire. She loves to sing Lieder, chansons and especially 20 th century English song. Angela directs and conducts Harmony '96, a large ad hoc choir which performs major oratorios twice a year. She is also MD of Eccles Community Choir, enjoying an opportunity to develop the voices of those who were never allowed in the school choir! For several years Angela taught singing in a large comprehensive school and later in a Sixth Form College, where she formed a choir, assisted in the production of musicals and initiated the development of music in the curriculum for students with both mild and severe learning difficulties. She is a firm believer that music is an essential life skill and that no one should be excluded on grounds of ability. Angela s students and choir have featured in Radio 3 s Discovering Music as part of the BBC Philharmonic s Education Programme in the Proms at the Albert Hall. In 2012 a similar project celebrated the Philharmonic s move to Media City. The resulting composition was performed for the Queen on her visit to Salford. Angela has a thriving private practice. She regularly runs performance workshops and master classes and is busy as an adjudicator where she endeavours to encourage performers, drawing on her own love of music and poetry and experience as a performer and teacher. Alongside her singing career Angela runs a charity in Kenya with her husband. ANTHEA SHEPHERDSON GMusRNCM, PGDipRNCM, ARCM Anthea studied with Dame Fanny Waterman for her teenage years, and then at the RNCM, choosing to specialise in accompaniment for her postgraduate year. During a varied career Anthea has worked throughout the UK, combining teaching posts with extensive freelance work as an accompanist, chamber musician, choral conductor (specialising in children s and Male Voice Choirs) and organist. Anthea is also a member of the main examining panel of the ABRSM, working both in the UK and in the Far-East. Anthea is now based on home ground in North Yorkshire and is currently Head of Keyboard at Bootham School in York. 8
