4 Guilderland Town Band This year marks the 30 th Anniversary Season for the Guilderland Town Band. Donald Webster, band director at Guilderland High School, founded the band in the spring of The first year the band consisted of about thirty members, mostly band students at Guilderland High School with a handful of adult musicians. In the first decade of Town Band, adult membership in the band grew slowly. The band performed concerts on the lawn at Tawasentha Park in Guilderland and the Village Park in Altamont. From the lawn of Tawasentha, the band soon moved to the perimeter of the swimming pool and presented Poolside Concerts. The band has performed at the Empire State Plaza on the Wednesday Night Concert Series, performing in front of the steps of the New York State Museum. The band also presented several Fourth of July concerts preceding the fireworks display at the Albany Country Club. With the construction of the Guilderland Performing Arts Center in Tawasentha Park, begun in the spring of 1980, the band finally had a permanent home. Band membership spiraled and now numbers over one hundred, typically performing with about eighty-five musicians. The band presented the first concert at GPAC, July 4, 1980, and has since performed three programs each summer on the GPAC Summer Series of free Thursday night concerts. In 1989, as part of the band s 20 th Anniversary Season, the band took an eleven-day tour of Belgium, Holland, and West Germany. They presented concerts in Brussels, Arnhem in the Province of Gelderland, Holland (from which our Town of Guilderland takes its name), and in Amsterdam, Holland. To celebrate our 30 th Anniversary Season, last Thursday night the band had the privilege of playing under guest conductor, Arnald D. Gabriel, Conductor Emeritus of the United States Air Force Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Singing Sergeants. The Guilderland Town Band is pleased and honored to perform on the new Agnes Macdonald Music Haven Stage and to be a part of your first series of summer concerts in such a beautiful new facility.
