These programs are designed to train pianists in collaborative work, but they also have a direct impact on many other constituents: partnering teachers and their students, as well as piano faculty, their students, and the spectrum of professional pianists who may already be working collaboratively at the school. This session will provide an opportunity to consider the benefits and the challenges of integrating a collaborative program into a college curriculum, and ways to shape a program to fit its school. 5 8:45 am 9:35 am SPLIT SESSIONS Music for People: Music Making for Everyone through Improvisation CCH Music for People is an organization founded by cellist David Darling and flautist Bonnie Insull in Two practitioners of Music for People will lead a participatory workshop on improvisation to help unleash peoples creative energy. We will start off with demonstrations of techniques such as One Quality Sound, Play What You Sing, Sing What You Play and The Great X. Then we will invite some audience members to join us for group improvisation exercises. Alison Weiner, a performing jazz musician and teacher, will then share how she applies these techniques in teaching, and Yuri Yamamoto will share her evolution as a classically trained musician stepping into the world of improvisation. We will close the workshop with a mini-concert to showcase our unique styles of improvisation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments. The workshop is designed to help attendees raise bodily awareness and acquire basic relaxation techniques related to music-making. Demonstration will include how to use the ipad, an app called Forscore, and a Bluetooth foot pedal that eliminates the need for manually turning pages for the collaborative pianist and facilitates meticulous organization and storage of thousands of pages of scores. The session
6 will also provide a presentation on the Nord keyboard, an amazing Swedish-made instrument that gives a keyboard player unlimited possibilities in collaborative work of all kinds, including pit orchestras, school choirs, churches, etc. Dr. Jim Waddelow, Meredith College, presenter Chelsea Stith, guest presenter Dr. Kent Lyman, NCTM, NCMTA Local Conference Chair, Meredith College, presenting and presiding The Great American Songbook: America s Art Song This session will explore the body of American songs known as the Great American Songbook, comprised primarily of works written in the second quarter of the twentieth century. Included will be information on the important songwriters and lyricists, specific songs and shows, the demise of this era of song, its resurgence as an American art form, and its importance and value to solo singers. Bach: What to do on the Repeat? CCH Ornamentation was a fundamental aspect of music expression in the Baroque era. When taking a repeat in Baroque music, adding embellishment was expected. We will look at several examples of fully notated embellishments written by Bach himself to show what is possible. The fourteen etudes are classically rooted, invoking a sound world reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, while also containing strong elements of jazz/pop. Dr. Thomas Otten, NCTM, presenter Dr. Frank Pittman, NCTM, presiding Chamber Music A panel discussion and musical demonstration! Topics will include the benefits of the chamber music experience to intermediate level student musicians; getting private teachers out of their studios and collaborating; and the basics of putting together an ongoing chamber music opportunity for young players. A distinguished panel will be led by Elizabeth Beilman, Executive Director of the North Carolina Chamber Institute (NCCI) and Associate Principal Cellist of the North Carolina Symphony. Highlighting the program will be performances by two student ensembles, the NCCI and a newly formed group from the Outer Banks. This presentation will support the idea that there is a natural order to things and that we cannot holistically separate ourselves from these inherent rhythms of life. The presenter works to rewrite the story and strengthen the connections. As an educator, he teaches how we can do this in partnership with the ancient wisdom traditions of the world. As a rhythmatist he helps entrain and harmonize, both within ourselves and within the larger circle.
