7 ADDITIONAL FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES WELCOME GATHERING Featuring a performance by 8-time GRAMMY nominated saxophonist, Kirk Whalum * Participants are invited to enjoy an exciting evening Jazz music featuring the Guest Performing Artists from Conn-Selmer, Inc. These outstanding jazz artists will provide a perfect opening to this unique music festival. The gathering will also give students and directors the opportunity to meet participants from across the country as well as be introduced to the panel of nationally-recognized adjudicators and clinicians for the Disney Jazz Celebration. Kirk Whalum will perform Friday evening along with the Conn-Selmer, Inc. Guest Performers to kick of the 2011 Disney Jazz Celebration. Kirk Whalum -- Soulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe the music of Kirk Whalum. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980 s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80 s were highlighted by Kirk s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. Jazz pianist Bob James discovered Kirk and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records, including Cache, Kirk s first #1 album. After moving to Los Angeles, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst many others. It s his sax heard on the mega-hit, I Will Always Love You. An ordained minister, Kirk recently earned his Masters of Art in Religion. In addition to music and ministry, Kirk has a passion to educate young, aspiring musicians and as such he was recently appointed CEO/President of the STAX Music Academy and the STAX Museum of American Soul Music in his hometown of Memphis, TN. Kirk has received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including eight GRAMMY nominations and two Dove Award nominations and has won two Stellar Awards, *Entertainment subject to change without notice MASTER CLASSES On the day before or after an ensemble s performance, participants will have the opportunity to attend Master Classes with top Conn-Selmer, Inc. clinicians. These sessions are designed to be educational and highly interactive. Master Classes will be presented within the following performance groups: Vocal Jazz Ensembles and Soloists Woodwinds Brass Rhythm Section Page 7 Disney

8 ADDITIONAL FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES (Continued) DISNEY JAM SESSION The purpose of the Disney Jam Session is to provide students with the opportunity to experience great jazz music performed by fellow students along with the nationally-recognized festival Clinicians and Guest Performers. Our goal is for every student to benefit and grow from this experience, whether they are on-stage or joining in the experience from the audience. Here is important information about the Jam Session to ensure your students have a positive musical experience. Prior to arrival, Directors will be asked to nominate up to five instrumental and two vocal performers per ensemble to participate. (Directors are encouraged to nominate confident musicians who have experience with improvisation. A document to nominate student performers will be provided in the Director s Handbook closer to the festival date.) The following list of popular jazz standards have been selected for the Jam Session: Title Category Performers 1. C Jam Blues B Flat Blues Instrumental, Vocal 2. Now s The Time F Blues Instrumental, Vocal 3. Blue Bossa Latin Instrumental 4. Satin Doll Swing Instrumental, Vocal 5. Take The A Train Swing Instrumental, Vocal 6. Summertime Swing Instrumental, Vocal 7. Cantaloupe Island Straight Eighth Notes Instrumental Directors can locate these selections from traditional sources including national publishers, arrangers, fake books, lead sheets or other schools. Directors are encouraged to feature one or more of the selected standards in local, school or district performances to develop student skills prior to the participating in the Disney Jazz Celebration. Each nominated student will be expected to know the chosen selections and be able to perform them if called upon during the Jam Session. Vocal students will perform with instrumental students during the Jam Session. To ensure instrumental balance, Directors should select a variety of instruments if possible (ie, Sax, Trumpet, Drums, Bass, etc) During the Jam Session, performers will be randomly chosen from the Director s nominees. Not all nominated students are guaranteed to perform on stage (Capacity for students to participate will be based on overall attendance and interest level from ensembles.) In order to accommodate the greatest number of students, rhythm section musicians must use the provided drum set, guitar/bass amps, vibes and piano/keyboard on the stage. (No individual set-ups are necessary) Directors will have the opportunity to perform alongside their students if a performer from their school is chosen to participate in the Jam Session. During the Jam Session, students will be randomly joined on-stage by the festival Clinicians and Guest Performers to add to the exciting performances and educational experience. All students participating in the Disney Jazz Celebration are expected to attend the Jam Session. Page 8 Disney
