4 2017 SOLO PIANO COMPETITION GUIDELINES Each fellow must perform a recital not exceeding 30 minutes Each fellow must play a work by a living composer Selections from, or movement(s) of, larger works are permissible The Jury assess: o Pianistic ability o Musicianship o Creativity of performance o Creativity of program o Readiness to prepare and present a recital tour GRAND PRIZE ARTIST PACKAGE The winning pianist will be presented by the Music Academy in partnership with Steinway & Sons in a multicity recital tour, including performances in Santa Barbara and New York All travel and accommodations for each recital, as well as musical preparation and coaching by Academy faculty prior to their recital tour will be provided The winning pianist will receive The Luria Foundation Prize, a $5,000 cash award. During the tour, the competition winner will give the world premiere of a new work for solo piano by Timo Andres, commissioned by the Music Academy with support from the Luria Foundation for the occasion A career development consultation session will be scheduled with 21C Media in New York The opportunity to receive innovation funding to support artistic or creative endeavors associated with their recital program PARTNERSHIP WITH STEINWAY & SONS The Music Academy of the West is proud to be designated as an All-Steinway School. The Academy has joined the ranks of music schools and conservatories that demonstrate a full commitment to excellence by providing their students and faculties with the best instruments possible. That is why the only pianos owned by the Music Academy now and in perpetuity from the practice room to the recital hall are designed by Steinway & Sons. The Music Academy now has a fleet of 55 Steinway pianos, including the latest addition; a Hamburg Steinway D that was personally chosen by faculty artist Jeremy Denk at the Steinway factory in Germany. The piano was officially welcomed at the 70th Anniversary Gala in a performance by Steinway artists Yuja Wang and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. In recognition of this new partnership, the winner of our brand-new Solo Piano Competition will perform on national tour exclusively in Steinway & Sons venues. An instrument endowment has been initiated that will provide funding for the maintenance and replacement of the pianos in the years to come, preserving the legacy of high quality on the entire Music Academy campus.

5 COMPETITION JURY Timo Andres The Luria Foundation guest composer in residence Composer/pianist Timo Andres (b. 1985, Palo Alto, CA) grew up in Connecticut, studied at Yale University, and lives in Brooklyn. A Nonesuch Records artist, Andres s recent works include a string quartet for the Takács Quartet; The Blind Banister, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist that was premiered by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Jonathan Biss; a new work for the Boston Symphony; and a two-piano concerto for the Britten Sinfonia, premiered at the Barbican. He performed the world premiere of a piano concerto by Ingram Marshall written for him with John Adams and the LA Phil, and appeared at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, where he received the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protégé Prize; Philip Glass selected Andres as the recipient of this award. Andres often collaborates with Mr. Glass, Gabriel Kahane, ACME, and others. This season he appears with Claire Chase at the Days and Nights Festival, performs recitals for San Francisco Performances, and at the Barbican with duo partner David Kaplan, collaborates with the Kronos Quartet, and writes new works for the Music Academy of the West, Ravinia s Steans Music Institute, Inbal Segev and the Metropolis Ensemble (at the Metropolitan Museum of Art), among others others. Jeremy Geffen Jeremy Geffen has served as director of artistic planning at Carnegie Hall since March Previous positions include vice president for artistic administration at the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, artistic administrator for the New York Philharmonic, and associate artistic administrator at the Aspen Music Festival and School. As well as planning the seasons, Mr. Geffen frequently leads pre-concert lectures and discussions. He has also adjudicated the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions several times, and served on the nominating jury for the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2012 and 2013 (serving as Chairman in the latter year.) In June 2015 he received Bang on a Can's Visionary Award for service to new music. Though born in South Africa, Mr. Geffen was raised in Newport Beach and attended USC as a student of Donald McInnes. He attended the Music Academy from Benjamin Salisbury Benjamin Salisbury earned his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in piano performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music studying with pianist Norman Krieger and composer Morten Lauridsen. He was awarded the Dean s Scholarship, the Adele Marcus Foundation award, the Pi Kappa Lambda award, and worked as a Studio Assistant to Mr. Krieger and Assistant Lecturer in the Keyboard Studies department. Upon completion of his academic studies, Dr. Salisbury accepted a full-time position with Steinway & Sons as manager of the Concert & Artist division in the greater Los Angeles area. He maintains an active performance calendar, appearing in the season with the Utah State Symphony, Southern California Historical Society, San Gabriel Valley Choral Company, Los Angeles Suzuki Institute, and the National Cello Institute. Benjamin and his wife, violinist Caroline Salisbury, founded the Gerona Rose Music Studio which offers private and group music instruction to forty-five students in the San Gabriel Valley.
