3 GREETINGS Dear Singers and Conductors from all over the world, Greetings from Soegijapranata Catholic University! As Rector of the university, I would like to welcome you all t o t h e S o e g i j a p r a n a t a C h o r a l F e s t i v a l. T h e Soegijapranata Choral Festival is the rst international art event to be held by this university, which has as its background the success story of Gratia Choir in its activities both within as well as outside the campus, including taking part in various choir competitions in several countries. The choir's success in these competitions has inspired many students to develop their artistic talents side by side their academic competence. We recognize that promoting the success of students and creating a favourable campus atmosphere is not dependent solely on academic activities, but is also by giving students the opportunity to develop their interests and talents in other areas as well. This is in line with the university's program which, over the next four years, will among others focus on connecting the various talents within the campus with the many opportunities and possibilities offered by society. Gratia Choir, one of the most successful student organizations on campus, is the natural team to organize the Soegijapranata Choral Festival in With their experiences in various competition activities, I am sure they will provide rich experiences for all participants from all over the world. They have prepared this event very well and are working hard for the Soegijapranata Choral Festival to provide the best opportunity for all who participate in this event. Their hard work aims to make all the dreams, of all the teams, who are singing together to the world, come true for. 4 ABOUT SOEGIJAPRANATA CHORAL FESTIVAL Mgr. Albertus Soegijapranata SJ is a Catholic Church gure. He is the rst bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Semarang who was ordained on 1 August 1940 and also the rst indigenous bishop in Indonesia. Thanks to his work in the life of the state to struggle and defend the independence of Indonesia, he was appointed as National Hero and buried in Giri Tunggal Cemetery Park Semarang. His name was made patron for a Catholic university in Semarang founded in 1982 and is now known as the Soegijapranata Catholic University (Source: The Soegijapranata Institute - pro le) Soegijapranata Choral Festival is organized by the Soegijapranata Catholic University of Semarang which has the motto "Talenta pro patria et humanitate" which means; the best talents are given by God for sake of the nation, country, and humanity. Therefore, Soegijapranata Choral Festival use the name of Soegijapranata as a characteristic and foundation for developing human potential, including in music and choir. 6 BUDI SUSANTO, YOHANES Budi Susanto Yohanes is a young Indonesian conductor and composer. He studied choral conducting and vocal minor in Korea National University of Arts in and graduated as Bachelor of Arts in Music and Choir Conducting. He started his choral music journey and established Gracioso Sonora Choir in Malang within year Later on he became the conductor for ITS Student Choir in Under his direction, the choir has achieved numerous international awards in Busan, Miltenberg, Cantonigros, Rimini, Debrecen, Torrevieja, Gorizia and Llangollen. He had experience as a chorister while taking part in Asian Youth Choir in Japan and Philippines as well as Collegium Vocale Seoul in Budi has been actively contributing as speaker and coach in workshops and choral clinics and frequently invited to participate as adjudicator in various national and international choir competition. As composer, Budi has produced nearly a hundred choral compositions for The Association for Music in International Schools and many Indonesian choir groups likewise. Moreover, some music publishing companies like Earthsongs USA, Carus- Verlag Germany, Kontrapunkt Hungary and Singapore Choral Research Center has published the works of Budi Susanto Yohanes. In 2012, his work 'O Nata Lux' won the 1st prize in Universitas Parahyangan Competition for Choral Composition. In spirit of pursuing a greater musical career, since early 2016 Budi Susanto Yohanes has settled in Jakarta and set up to work with some local choir groups namely difertimento vocal ensemble and Terra Voce. During 2016, he has involved in several concert programs in Jakarta and given workshop at Musikalinangan and Philippine Choral Director Association's Reading Session. In July 2016, he was one of the adjudicator in The 55th Concorso Internazionale Di Canto Corale Segghizi, Italy. 5

7 AGASTYA RAMA LISTYA Agastya Rama Listya was born in February 18, 1968 in Yogyakarta. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta in His master's degree in choral conducting was received from Luther Seminary and St. Olaf College, Minnesota, in the USA in He studied composition with the late R.M.A.P. Suhastjarja, the late Slamet Abdul Syukur, Robert Walker, dan Carolyn Jennings. He learned choral conducting under the tutelage of Ester Gunawan, I Gusti Ngurah Wiryawan Budhiana, Martin Behrmann, Robert Scholz and Anton Armstrong. Currently, he is completing his nal stage of doctoral study in Ethnomusicology at Otago University in New Zealand. His research topic is on An Ethnomusicological Study of Gong Music from the Island of Rote. Agastya is under supervision of Prof. Henry Johnson and Dr. Jennifer Cattermole. As an active composer and arranger, most of his choral works are commissioned by professional and university choirs for competitions, festivals or concerts. His compositions span from modern to traditional ones, from twelve-tone serialism to folksong choral arrangements. Recently, he has been interested in exploring Indonesian folk music. The multifarious of Indonesian folk music has become inspiration for some of his choral music. He published his works in four books: Jalan Orang Benar: Kumpulan Aransemen Lagu Rohani Empat Suara Campuran Jilid 1 (Penerbit Andi Yogyakarta, June 2007), A Z: Direksi Paduan Suara (Yamuger Jakarta, June 2007), The New Hymns of Faith (Pustaka Muria, July 2007), Nusantara Persada (Yamuger, October 2008), Risalah Kontrapung Tonal 2 dan 3 Suara (Yamuger, Mei 2015). Apart from these publications, he has been a regular writing contributor to Indonesian Choral Net online bulletin and the International Choral Bulletin published by the International Federal for Choral Music. He has been actively involved as the choir director of the Salatiga Indonesian Christian Church's choir from 2007 to date and has produced some albums with this choir, for instance, As a Family, We Thank You (2007), The Joy of Christmas (2008), Greatness of God (2009), Sing We All Noel (2010), and Sacred Classical Pieces to Traditional Hymns (2011). He was also the choral director of Satya Wacana Students' Choir Voice of SWCU ( ), Satya Wacana Students' Vocal Ensemble Lentera Kasih ( ), Satya Wacana Vocal Consort (2011), and recently Lux Aeterna Vocal Ensemble (2015 present). 6

8 mark anthony carpio Choirmaster, The Philippine Madrigal Singers Mark Anthony Carpio was personally chosen by National Artist of the Philippines, Andrea O. Veneracion to succeed her reins as choirmaster of the Philippine Madrigal Singers in Since then, Mark has taken the group to even greater heights, leading them to win rst prizes in the Habanera and Polyphony categories in the Certámen Internacional de Habaneras y Polifonia (Torrevieja, Spain, 2004), the Grand Prix in the 35th Florilege Vocal de Tours, France (2006), the Grand Prize in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing (Arezzo, Italy, 2007) and just recently for winning top prizes at the 64th Guido D'Arezzo International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy (2016). Under his leadership, the choir continues to ful ll a grueling schedule of annual international tours, national outreach programs and its regular concert season as the resident choir of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Mark also conducts the Sing Philippines Youth Choir, which draws its fty members biennially from all provinces of the country, in honor of the Madrigal Singers' founder who established the vision of a nation singing together in harmony and united in song. Mark also directs the other Sing Philippines projects that include choral music workshops, and conductor/singer development initiatives. Known for his collaboration with emerging composers, innovative programming, and approachability, Mark is a much sought-after choral clinician and coach, frequently giving extensive and in-depth workshops all over the Philippines and around the world. He is also frequently invited as adjudicator in choral competitions and as guest conductor of several choirs around the world, including the rst batch of the Indonesia Youth Choir (2015). Mark is a faculty member of the Conducting and Choral Ensemble Department of the University of the Philippines College of Music, where he earned his Master's degree in Choral Conducting and his Bachelor's degree in Piano. Nurturing young singers is a personal passion of Mark. With this, he also directs the Consortium of Voices, a youth choir society consisting of the Kilyawan Boys Choir, Kilyawan Male Choir and the Voces Auroræ Girls Choir. 7

14 GRAND PRIX 1. (a) The Choir which achieved Gold Medal with the highest score (catergory champion) in the category of Children Choir, Teenager Choir, Mixed Youth Choir, Mixed Choir, Sacred Music, Equal Voices, and Folklore will advance to the Grand Prix. (b) With special consideration, the jury can choose The choir group that does not achieve category champion to advance to the Grand Prix. 2. The Choirs who pass the Grand Prix must attend the round. Sanctions against Choirs who do not take part in the Grand Prix round is the choir will not get the prizes that should be their right, but still hold the title according to their achievement during the competition. 3. The Choirs that achieve more than one Category Champion, will only appear once in the Grand Prix. 4. The choirs are required to perform two freely chosen works. It is allowed to repeat a maximum of one song that has been performed in the competition. 5. The maximum duration of choirs performances is 10 minutes (pure singing). 6. The Choirs are required to ll out Repertory Form for the Grand Prix. 7. The nal adjudication on the Grand Prix will be decided independently by the jury and the jury will decide the rst, second and third winners of the Soegijapranata Choral Festival Grand Prix. 8. The announcement of the Choirs who pass to the Grand Prix will be delivered via SMS and The order of the Choirs performances for the Grand Prix will be determined by randomly by the committee and artistic team. 13

15 RULES

16 general rules 1. The Choirs can follow more than one category as long as they still meet the requirements of that category. 2. Conductors and singers can only perform to represent one choir in one category. 3. All members of the choir group that follows the Kindergarten Choir, Children Choir, Teenager Choir, Mixed Youth Choir and Mixed Choir categories must match the intended age group, except for the musician and conductor. Age tolerance for the Kindergarten Choir, Children Choir, Teenager Choir, Mixed Youth Choir and Mixed Choir categories are allowed for a maximum of four persons one year older than or less than the age limit speci ed in that category. Violation of these provisions will cause the choir group to be disquali ed from the competition. If necessary, the committee shall be entitled to clarify the provisions of that age to each member of the choir group concerned. 4. The song should be an original piece for the choir, not reduction. 5. Not allowed to bring a song in the medley (merging two or more songs). 6. The works should be in accordance with the score; a. Works created with accompaniment, must be performed with the accompaniment of the score. b. Works created with a capella can be performed in a capella or by a non-de nite pitch or without a tune. 7. The committee will only provide an acoustic piano. 8. The use of ampli cation and electric musical instruments are not allowed in this competition. 9. The artistic team reserves the right to reject the work to be sung, if it is not to comply with the provisions of this competition. 10. The Choirs are not allowed to repeat the performance, except at the request of the jury. 11. All COPYRIGHTS or authority on the use of songs is entirely the responsibility of the participants. 12. The order of choirs performances during the competition will be fully regulated by the committee. 13. The rehearsal stage will be scheduled for 10 minutes for each choir for each category followed. The rehearsal stage schedule will be arranged by the committee and will be informed to the participants after the announcement of the recording selection. 15

17 jury & evaluation Soegijapranata Choral Festival will be judged by ve juries who have experience in music and choir, both at national and international level. The scoring in this competition is based on the following criteria: A. Intonation B. Sound / vocal quality C. Fidelity to the score D. Overall artistic impression The criteria for the scoring of points A and C will be scored on each song being performed; for the B and D points scoring criteria will be scored on the overall performance. The score assigned by each jury on each valuation criterion is an integer with a range of and the result of subsequent score calculation uses a value with a decimal point system two digits behind the comma (provided that a decimal number less than 5 will be rounded down and a decimal number more than 5 will be rounded up). Example: the value will be rounded to 78, 64 and the value will be rounded to 84, 47. Delays of the performances will be penalized 3 points from the total temporary score. Excess duration of performance will be penalized 1 point from the total score while each entering the rst 60 seconds. The total temporary score is obtained from an average of ve juries' score. The total nal score is the total temporary score minus the total penalty. The decision of the jury is absolute.

Each choir in each category will receive an award with the following conditions : Score : Bronze Medal B Score : Bronze Medal A Score : Silver Medal B Score : Silver Medal A Score : Gold Medal B Score : Gold Medal A All choirs will receive award certi cates and medals according to the achievement of the choir. 2. The choir which achieved Gold Medal with the highest score in each category (category champion) will get a trophy, certi cate and money of IDR. 3. The jury will give a special award (if any), ie: The best conductor selected from the choirs who advance to the Grand Prix. The other special jury award, which is deemed appropriate after the jury's consideration. The winner of the special jury award will get the award certi cate. 4. The Soegijapranata Choral Festival organizers will give the award certi cates for favorite champions in all categories. Favorite champions are determined based on audience choice. Favorite champions have no effect whatsoever on the results of the juries' judgment. 5. The rst winner for the Grand Prix will receive award trophy, award certi cates, and money of IDR. 19

21 REGISTRATION 1. The choirs must ll in the Registration Form available on the website of Soegijapranata Choral Festival ( and include some of the following requirements, ie: a) Upload a short biography of the choirs, in Indonesian or English, a maximum of 300 words (MS Word). b) Upload the latest photo of the choir (max 5MB, JPEG format, 300dpi) c) Upload a recording le of the choir (MP3, max size 8 MB) for each of the categories followed. The recording must match the selected category. d) Upload the proof of payment of registration fee. 2.
