1 Garwood Whaley began his study of drums and percussion with Juilliard graduate Bruce Tucker in Tarrytown, New York. At Tucker s suggestion, he auditioned and was accepted at the Juilliard School where he studied for two years with Morris (Moe) Goldenberg and three years as a scholarship student with Saul Goodman. Goodman had recently sent Anthony Cirone to the San Francisco Symphony and promised Whaley the next position Goodman was asked to fill. Goodman referred to Whaley as one of his most talented students. While at Juilliard, he free lanced in New York and began giving private lessons at the White Plains Academy of Music and Art in White Plains, NY. Upon graduation, Gar performed with Paul Lavalle and The World s Fair Band of America during the 1965 World s Fair. In October of 1965 he received a draft notice and auditioned for the United States Army Band at the West Point Military Academy. No positions were available there but Captain Eugene Allen, the auditioning officer, immediately called the Army Band in Washington, DC and procured a position for Whaley with that band. During his six years as percussionist with the United States Army Band Pershing s Own, Gar gigged and began teaching, building a studio of around fifty students at all performance levels. It was during this period that he began writing instructional books to fill what he perceived as a void in the pedagogical percussion literature. Positions Garwood Whaley received degrees from the Juilliard School and The Catholic University of America where he earned a doctor of musical arts degree while performing with the United States Army Band, Pershing s Own. While a member of the Army Band, he performed several times as soloist including a performance of Milhaud s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra (band arrangement). He is conductor emeritus of the Bishop Ireton Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Alexandria, Virginia, former adjunct professor of music at The Catholic University of America, past president of the Percussive Arts Society, former curriculum coordinator of instrumental music for the Diocese of Arlington Schools, former chief editor for Music for Percussion, Inc., and president and founder of Meredith Music Publications (1979). As director of Meredith Music, he has been responsible for the publication of some of the most exceptional performance and educational materials available today. More than 400 composers and authors are included in the Meredith catalog. While serving for thirty years as Curriculum Coordinator of Instrumental Music for the Diocese of Arlington Schools (VA), he was responsible for the administration of instrumental music in twenty-nine schools. During his tenure, he established a yearly honor band, an annual band festival and was responsible for providing instrumental music education to thousands of students in Catholic Schools in the Northern Virginia area. While in the Army Band he taught percussion at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and later served as adjunct professor of music at Catholic University teaching private lessons, percussion methods and courses in music education. As a percussion instructor at Catholic University, he organized the first percussion ensemble, whose members included Doug Howard, John Rudolph, Dick Ecton, Frank Cocuzzi and Randy Eyles. He lives with his Studies and the best selling title Musical Studies for the Intermediate Snare wife Adele and Welsh terrier Blossom in Delray Beach, Florida. Drummer. I caught up with Garwood (Gar) at PASIC 2013 for a chat and am pleased In 1979, Whaley founded Meredith Music Publications and continued to present this interview/portrait of this inspirational musician. Having studied and taught from many of your fantastic publications, it is a real honour to share time with you discussing your incredible career. From early on, your leadership in composing and publishing percussion music has set an example of best practice in combining educational and artistic pathways. How has the publishing industry changed and where do you see our future going. Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of creativity in many publications coming out today. I see a lot of copy cat publications. That is, taking the best from successful method books and pirating that material into new publications. Another lack-of-creativity approach is to use the same material over and over from one book to the next. On another note, with the new era of digital printing, self-publishing and the Internet, it is much easier to have things published by the individual. However, distribution is a problem and the cost is often prohibitive. In my opinion, it is best to seek out an established, reputable publisher who can help with distribution, marketing and both hard copy and electronic edition production. With thousands of young people pursuing careers in percussion education, performance and research, what advice would you give to the: beginner, first year university student and university graduate looking for their first job. Don t quit, stick with it! It is not easy to break into any profession in the arts. Although I was trained as a symphonic percussionist, most of my career has been in music education, conducting and publishing. This is nothing that I planned but it s the way my life led me. So you never know what path life will take you. My best advice is to work hard at what you do, be prepared-because you never know when an opportunity will present itself-and don t be afraid to go where life leads you. A drummer/percussionist might end up as a professional performer or in some other area in the arts. Or, perhaps in a totally different field. A great number of medical doctors and computer engineers have strong backgrounds in music. The ability to multi-task, as most drummers can, is a common trait among corporate executive officers! As a performer, composer and conductor you have article CUA Orchestra Percussion worked with numerous luminaries throughout your career. Many of us hear of the giants of the past, names like Morris Goldenberg, Saul Goodman, and Henry Adler to name a few. Would you be willing to share some of your experiences/anecdotes about your time with them as student and colleague? I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have spent five years at Juilliard studying with Morris (Moe) Goldenberg and Saul Goodman-what an experience! Not only my studies with them, but the students that I was surrounded by served as inspirations and colleagues including Anthony Cirone (San Francisco Symphony), Eugene Espino (Cincinnati Symphony), Gerry Carlyss (Philadelphia Orchestra), Jimmie Rago (Louisville Symphony), Rick Holmes (St. Louis Symphony), Dick Ecton (U.S. Army Band), Wilson Moreman (N.Y. City Freelance), Bob Ayres (N.Y. City Freelance, Broadway Show percussion), David Goldberg (N.Y. City Ballet), David Friedman (International Jazz Artist), Lee Beach (New Orleans Symphony), Gordon Gottlieb (Juilliard, New York Philharmonic) and others. My fifty-year friendship with Anthony (Tony) Cirone led to our publication of a number of tremendous works of his and, our collaboration, together with Neil Grover, on several titles including The Art of Percussion Playing. Several years ago I appointed Tony as senior editor of percussion publications for my company Meredith Music Publications. From Moe Goldenberg I learned how to sight-read and studied lots of percussion literature. From Saul I learned the importance of sub dividing which he insisted on. I learned the interpretation of symphonic timpani parts that he had developed over the years from conductors like Toscanini, Mahler, Bernstein and countless others. People comment on the musicality of my percussion writing, which when I started composing was not common in the percussion literature of the day. I credit any musicality that I may have to my years at Juilliard being surrounded by talented students and fantastic teachers and the creativity that the school encouraged. One of my most prized possessions is an autographed picture from my teacher Saul Goodman with the inscription: To Gar Whaley, one of my most gifted and musical students. For more information on Garwood Whaley please go to What is on the horizon for you, any new projects, books etc. in the pipeline? There s always something new at Meredith Music Publications! Right now we are doing a series of three books on the interpretation of timpani parts for the nine Mahler Symphonies by David Herbert (Chicago Symphony). We have a series of Marimba books by former student Patrick Roulet titled Christmas Carols for Marimba, Folk Songs for Marimba and Church Hymns for Marimba. We just published an exciting work by my former student Dean Borghesani (Milwaukee Symphony) titled Turbo for 4 Timpani. And just released is The Modern Concert Snare Drum Roll by St. Louis Symphony principal percussionist William James. We are publishing a series of intermediate method books for all brass and woodwind instruments and have several new pedagogical texts coming out on conducting, musical interpretation and an exciting new comprehensive musicianship series titled Guides to Band Masterworks.
