9 3 U Nlf 2 Rhythm Time Signatre How do msic readers know how many beats there are in a measre? They know becase at the beginning of a piece of msic, to the right of the clef sign, are two nmbers, one above the ocher, like this: These two nmbers are called a time signatre. (r's also called a meter signatre, bt we'll call it a time signatre.) The top nmber of the time signatre tells s how many beats there are in each measre. The bottom nmber of the time signatre tells s which note gets one beat. Here's how to know which note gees one beat: if the bottom nmber is a 2, a half note gets one beat. if the bottom nmber is a 4, a qarter note gets one beat. if rhe bottom nmber is an 8, an eighth note gets one beat. 16 Ties vs. Slrs \y A Tie is a crved line connecting two or more notes of the same pitch. A tie extends a note's vale.
