This is a good class for beginning ringers or ringers who may not know many different techniques. Creatively Using Handbells in Worship Tim Navis Have you ever thought about the many avenues available in a worship setting using handbells? To often Music Directors get complacent in using handbells as a Prelude, Offertory, or Postlude; however, how about with the hymns, as a response to prayer, or to tell a Bible story. To go even further, how about using them as a prayer itself, or a benediction, or as the primary instrument in a worship setting when an organist/pianist may not be available? This session will brainstorm ideas, give repertoire possibilities, and give you the chance to voice your experiences and traditions! General Session - Repertoire - Friday 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM The Handbell Repertoire Session will be done in two parts. The first part will focus on liturgical music for the fall or Ordinary time as well as music for major worship services such as All Saints Day, Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas. The second part will focus on the major liturgical worship services of the winter/spring season, including Transfiguration, Ash Wednesday, Lent (Season of), Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday. Both sessions will include music of various levels as well as some quick-learn pieces that are great to have on hand. (Those enrolled in Music Theory Certification are welcome to take part in this Repertoire Session.) Saturday Theory Testing (Only for those Registered for Certification) 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM Class Session II - Saturday Morning 8:30 AM-9:30 AM Bells for Small Number of Ringers (less than a 3-octave group) Debbie Henning Are your volunteer bell choir members dwindling? Are several of your members going south for the winter? How can you play quality music for worship or concert with less than 11 ringers? This track will concentrate on answering those questions. Topics covered will include techniques & notations for 1 to 6 ringers (solo, duet, trio, quartet, quintet), and score study for converting a 3

4 4 Stuck in the Middle Saturday Morning 8:30 AM-9:30 AM (Continued) The middle bells, or battery, is a fun place to be! There can be a lot of action in the music of the middle bells, and this class will give you some strategies and practice for handling what comes up. Class Session III - Saturday Morning 9:45 AM-10:45 AM Techniques A - Z Creatively Using Handbells in Worship Stuck in the Middle Tim Navis Class Session IV - Saturday Morning 11:00 AM-12:00 PM Conducting Speaking Italics and Italian: Dynamics, tempo changes, expression phrases. They re typically in italics, Italian, or both! The course teaches basic conducting patterns and gestures (which directors AND ringers need to know!), and explores interpretation of how difficult-to-conduct passages may be approached, showing the importance of the left hand, getting ringers to learn conducting basics so they know what all that hand-waving is about (and ensuring that the directors are waving appropriately). Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring pieces that present conducting challenges so that we may customize the class for specific applications. 7 7 MUSIC THEORY CERTIFICATION - LEVEL I This track is part of the Handbell Musicians of America Certification Program. If you intend to take this Certification Track, you must be pre-enrolled through the National website to get credit for the course completion. Please go to and scroll down to How to Participate in Certification to enroll in the Certification Program. The maximum is 12 students. This track consists of two (2) ninety minute sessions plus the test. Music Theory 1 Building on the basics of note-reading and rhythmic constructions will ensure a basic working knowledge of music theory, both generally and as it pertains to handbells and handchimes. This class is NOT a music fundamentals course, but a music theory course. It assumes students already have a solid working knowledge of basic treble- and bassclef reading and standard time signatures/note values; an understanding of what sharps and flats do; and, ideally, a general navigation of the notes of the piano keyboard. In order to successfully pass this course as part of the certification curriculum, students must be able to: Know mechanical parts of a handbell score (barline, notehead, stem, beam, grand staff, etc.) and pitch names for C3- C6 (handbell designation C4-C7). Understand the one-octave aural transpositional nature of handbells and handchimes as instruments. Recognize and identify rhythmic values of notes and rests from sixteenth notes through whole notes (including the mathematical comprehension of dotted notes and triplets). Understand measured construction of music and time signatures related to perfect simple and perfect compound meters (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 2/2, 3/2, 6/8, 9/8 (3+3+3), 12/8), including abbreviations for common time and cut time. Recognize key signatures and associated scales up to 3 sharps and 3 flats, inclusive; understand and identify relative- minor equivalencies. Comprehend basic dynamic markings (ppp through fff), diminuendo/decrescendo, crescendo, mezzo; as well as understand common basic performance markings. Recognize intervals of octave, perfect fifth, perfect fourth, major/minor third; understand difference between prime unison and colloquial unison (e.g., unison at the octave ). Have a basic understanding of triadic harmony and chord construction, and the difference/relationship between major and minor triads. Recognize and understand basic enharmonic equivalents. Comprehend simple score navigation: repeat signs, basic endings, D.S., D.C., Coda. Evaluate a handbell score and create a Handbells Used Chart for a three-octave piece. Replicate any rhythm which may appear in a handbell score of Level 1, 2 or 3.
