2 Notes from the Co-Artistic Directors kay. So we re just going to assume O that everyone here is a regular theatregoer. Also, for the purposes of this little fantasy, let s assume that when you want some entertaining theatrical music to slap onto your stereo, into your CD player or to light up the face of your digital/laser/crystal music delivery system you choose a musical. And since there are approximately 22,000 recordings Andorlie Hillstrom Robert Ursan of 7,000 shows we have a huge Co-Artistic Directors choice in front of us. We might as well, since this flight of fancy is already begun, assume that when you re looking for something light and frothy, or something boldly eclectic and daring, you aim for the Canadian musicals section of your... Oh. Wait. That s a much smaller number of possibilities...47 by my count...and, of course, only five or six are currently available to buy in stores or online... So, what are we left with? What about all the great musical theatre that s being produced around the country? The new stuff? The shows that have been lauded and applauded in the major centres across our country? Why can t we listen to that music? We have brilliant songwriters in Canada. Why not brilliant musical theatre? Well, Making Love in a Canoe is going to make you want to ring up the recording producers of our land and demand that more of this material become available. Kyle Golemba is going to whet your appetite for these kinds of songs. You will thank him for his brilliant performances of this music he s found, but you may not want to thank him for introducing you to something that you may discover difficult to find again. Having Kyle return is a great joy to us yet another of Saskatchewan s exports who we are so pleased to have perform for us all. We also welcome his frequent collaborator Adam White, who has been on this journey with Kyle through many of its incarnations. Making Love in a Canoe is a wonderful metaphor. It describes not only the precarious nature of being a performer, but also of creating theatre in any shape or form. We here at The Golden Apple Theatre know you will love this show. 4 Cast & Crew Kyle Golemba Kyle is thrilled to be making his hometown debut with The Golden Apple Theatre! Since graduating from college, he s appeared in such shows as: Anne of Green Gables (Gilbert, Stage West); The Sound of Music (Rolf, Neptune Theatre); Anne and Gilbert (Roy, Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre); and Cinderella (Prince Christopher, Grand Theatre). His film/tv credits include: Queer As Folk (Showtime) and Hairspray (New Line Cinema). After Canoe, he will be returning to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival for his fifth season, appearing in The Pirates of Penzance and as Andy Lee in 42nd Street. In previous seasons, he has played Gremio (Kiss Me, Kate), A-rab (West Side Story), and appeared as an understudy as Bill (Kate), Connie (The Grapes of Wrath), Peter (Jesus Christ Superstar), and Che (Evita). He would like to extend his thanks to Andorlie and Rob for inviting him home, his family for supporting him, and KB, for everything. Adam White Adam is happy to visit Regina with Making Love in a Canoe, and The Golden Apple Theatre. In addition to an on-going cabaret series with Kyle Golemba, Adam has been musical director for Smile Theatre s three-actor adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, Tis the Season (Smile Theatre), Hair (TYT), A New Brain (Theatre Sheridan), and workshops of several new Canadian musicals. As an actor, Adam has played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz (Empire Theatre), Cosme McMoon in Glorious! (Stage West Calgary and Globus Theatre), and performed in productions of The Full Monty (Empire Theatre) and One Step Forward (TIFT). Thank you for supporting Canadian musical theatre, and to family, friends and Robert for their continuing support. Esther Howie (Stage Manager) Esther is thrilled to be working with The Golden Apple Theatre again. 5 Cast & Crew, cont d William Hales (Lighting Designer) William has a BFA from the University of Regina and a MFA from the University of Calgary. He has worked with the Globe Theatre and Stage West in Regina and 25th Street Theatre and Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon. In Edmonton he worked for Northern Light Theatre, The Citadel Theatre, Phoenix Theatre, Workshop West, the Edmonton Fringe Festival and Alberta Ballet. In Calgary he worked at Theatre Calgary and the University Theatre Services at the University of Calgary. In 1999 he returned to teach at the University of Regina. Bill designed the lighting for The Only Animal s NiX, a play constructed entirely from snow and ice. Alberta Theatre Projects in Calgary first produced the play. Bill won the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Lighting Design for the 2008/09 Calgary Theatre Season. The production was remounted in Whistler for the 2010 Olympic Cultural Festival. The Golden Apple Theatre engages, under the terms of the Independent Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of the Canadian Actors Equity Association. Spectacular! 6 The voyageurs, the coureurs de bois, the men of the north; they are the expression of a central Canadian archetype: the soul gone wild, the garden overrun, the heart that has made its peace with the primal unknown. hile doing research for this, the theatrical debut of Making Love in a Canoe, I W came across the above quote. It s from Why I Hate Canadians by Will Ferguson, which examines everything from history to politics to why the hell a water-logged rat is our national animal. The book is a great read, with challenging ideas about our identity as Canadians, but it was the chapter on voyageurs that screamed program notes! Described by Ferguson as quintessential Canadian protagonists, the voyageurs traversed our waterways in canoes to sell their furs, singing all the while!!! Yes, they truly sang: the music kept the beat for their paddles and staved off boredom on long journeys. Program Notes It was in reading this that I realized Adam and I are very much post-modern voyageurs (with contemporary trapper hats, no less). Just trade canoes for Hondas, furs for cabarets, and French-Canadian folk music for original cast recordings and the picture is complete. For the last five years, we have traversed our own paths through reams of Canadian music, buying and trading like the Hudson s Bay Company until we assembled a collection of tunes that we love dearly. This assortment is undoubtedly Canadian despite the variety of the styles and ideas of the music. (This comes as no surprise if you consider Canadian identity: an undeniable concept that exists both because and in spite of our greatly varying regional personalities.) Throughout these tunes you will find excitement, tenderness, sex, humour, dreams, and always joy. Sounds awfully Canadian to me. With that, welcome aboard our little trip. Pick up a paddle and head downstream with us as we tour through the music of our souls gone wild. We hope the rhythms and melodies will do today what they did almost 400 years ago: set the beat for your heart and chase away boredom on a chilly night.
