1 2014 Summer Registration Guide Special Incentives for Summer Courses All online or internship course credits will be discounted 10% for Summer 2014 Semester. This discount will show as a credit toward tuition and will be applied at the end of the drop/add period in Summer 2014 Semester. This discount is valued at nearly $300 per course. Students who register at the full-time level (at least 12 credits) in Summer Semester by 3/31 will be put into a drawing for a $1000 scholarship. 5 Summer 2014 Ensemble Course Offerings Register for ENS000 to participate in Summer Ensembles, and that number will be replaced if/when you are accepted into an Ensemble. Auditions are the first week of the Summer term. The following Ensembles are held in a six week period over Summer semester (5/19 to 7/1/2014): ENS104 Modern Rock Ensemble Steve Jennings The Modern Rock ensemble explores music written after Music will be chosen from rock artists as diverse as Robert Plant, Evanescence, Muse, Paramore, No Doubt, and the Foo Fighters. ENS110 Jazz Ensemble Chris Olson The great Duke Ellington always wrote and arranged for whatever players he had in his band at any given time. Consequently, material changed depending on what talents the performers displayed. Nearly every sound imaginable has been used in jazz so all instruments are welcome in this ensemble, including vocalists. ENS120 Afro Caribbean Drumming Ensemble Shai Hayo Learn the fundamentals of drumming traditions of the Spanish speaking Caribbean, focusing primarily on the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico. Ensemble members participate in a group style learning of the traditional drumming appropriate to styles/genres such as Bomba, Guaguancó, Bembé, and Comparsa. ENS160 Creative Ensemble Steve Jennings This course emphasizes student organization, leadership, and initiative with faculty advisement in a band setting. This is where student initiative and group dynamics collide with self-motivation. Potential ensembles present a musical direction, vision, and student performer list for review. Interested students must contact Steve.Jennings@mcnallysmith.edu for the creative ensemble proposal form. The proposal is due Friday April 11. ENS170 1 Vocal Workshop Rhythm Section Steve Faison
6 This group will prepare a body of repertoire to accompany the vocal workshop singers. Material will include jazz music from the great American songbook ( ) plus selections from the current popular music genre. Instruments: Keys, Guitar, Bass, and Drums. This ensemble is designed as an opportunity to perform these styles at the McNally Smith Vocal Workshop June 26 July 1. ENS170 2 Guitar Workshop Rhythm Section Steve Jennings This group will prepare a body of repertoire to accompany the workshop guitarists. Material will include rock, metal, jazz and blues. Instruments: Vocals, Keys, Guitar, Bass, and Drums. This ensemble is designed as an opportunity to perform these styles at the McNally Smith Guitar Workshop June 26 July 1. The following Ensembles are held in a nine week period over Summer semester (5/19 to 7/29/2014). Auditions are at the beginning of April by appointment with Erin.Schwab@mcnallysmith.edu: ENS368 1 Theater Ensemble Erin Schwab (2 credits) ENS368 2 Theater Pit Ensemble Raymond Berg (1 credit) Girl Groups of the 1950 s, 60 s, and 70 s Written by Raymond Berg This original review show highlights the female singers who became famous during the 50 s, 60 s, and 70 s including a range from the Ronettes to the Pointer Sisters. The pit orchestra includes guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, strings and horns. Performances: July 18, 19, and 20 in the History Theater. A cast recording experience will be a new component of this experience.
