MARCHING BAND The Duncanville High School Marching Band is comprised of all members of the Wind Ensemble, Honors Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Varsity Band. General Requirements and Expectations All students who (1) pass the Fundamentals Test; (2) earn a uniform; (3) attend all rehearsals, and (4) make a conscientious effort to improve will be considered to perform during the marching season. However, contest performances will be limited to those students who demonstrate the most advanced skills for performance. Should a student miss a marching practice for any reason, his/her place in the show will be filled by an alternate. An "alternate" is simply a student who does not currently have a place on the field in a numbered position. Students are not designated as "permanent alternates" unless they have not complied with the attendance rules OR have been subject to a disciplinary action. Therefore, alternates may be worked back into the lineup as spots open up or as necessary to replace those who are having difficulty. In this way, it is hoped that everyone will have ample opportunities to gain experience. Younger students, new students, and those with little experience can expect to be alternates more often than upperclassmen. Selection of alternates may change at any time during the week. Alternates are an integral part of all performances and will assist the directors with field equipment and organizational needs. All students will participate in the home pre-game show, the stands and march the BIG D at the end of every half time performance. Students placed in permanent alternate positions because of disciplinary action will not participate at any time in performance. Regular Marching Band Rehearsal Schedule (August 28 through November 10) Mondays: 6:15-8:45 pm Tuesdays: 6:15-8:45 pm Wednesdays: No practice (except as noted) Thursdays or Fridays: Either rehearsal from 3:15-5:30 or Game Days (check the band calendar) Should the football team advance in the play-offs, the marching band will continue to perform but have an abbreviated rehearsal schedule. Marching Band Eligibility Most of the activities associated with marching band are extra-curricular including football games and contests. In order to be eligible by TEA, UIL and DISD requirements, students must be passing ALL classes at the end of the first six weeks. Students who fail any single class at the end of a nine week s grading period will become ineligible at the end of the seventh week. Students who fail an Honors or AP class may have that grade exempted by the principal if certain other conditions are met. However, under Duncanville ISD rules, only one exemption per student can be granted per semester. The Duncanville ISD eligibility rules are more stringent than those of the state therefore parents and students should become familiar with every aspect of the eligibility requirements.

BAND CLASSES All the members of the band program are assigned by audition to one of several concert bands that meet as academic classes. THERE IS A CHART EXPLAINING THE MINIMUM COMPENTENCIES FOR EACH BAND IN THIS HANDBOOK. The chart is only intended as a MINIMUM skill chart. Most students should be able to play at a skill level higher than that on the chart. Wind Ensemble (grades 9-12) The Wind Ensemble is recognized as one of the outstanding concert ensembles in the U.S. at any level and the music performed is the highest degree of difficulty. Performances will include UIL, one or more invitational festivals, two or more spring concerts, and special events. A one-hour section rehearsal will be scheduled weekly from November-May. Wind Ensemble members cannot miss rehearsal from the beginning of school until the final performance for anything other than school-sponsored competition, illness, or emergency. There will be a special Wind Ensemble commitment letter to sign in addition to this handbook before becoming a member. Members of the Wind Ensemble are required to register for the corresponding section of Instrumental Ensemble. Performance Level VI is required for placement in the wind ensemble (see Minimum Skills Chart). Honors Band (grades 10-12) A one hour sectional rehearsal will be held each week outside of class time. These rehearsals will not begin until January. Performances will include UIL, one or more invitational festivals, two or more spring concerts, and special events. In addition, extra rehearsals and clinics are occasionally scheduled during competition time. Members of the Honors Band cannot miss rehearsal within 7 days of performance for any reason other than school competition, illness, or emergency. Members of the Honors Band are required to register for the corresponding section of Instrumental Ensemble. Performance Level V is required for placement in the Honors Band (see Minimum Skills Chart). Symphonic Band and Concert Bands (grades 9-12) A one hour sectional rehearsal will be held each week outside of class time. The Symphonic and Concert Bands will perform at UIL Contest, an invitational festival, and two or more concerts in the spring. Members cannot miss rehearsal within 7 days of performance for any reason other than school competition, illness, or emergency. Both Bands are scheduled in a daily period that does not require registration for Instrumental Ensemble. Performance Level IV is required for placement in a Symphonic Band (see Minimum Skills Chart). Varsity Band (grades 9-12) A one hour sectional rehearsal may be held each week outside of class time. The Varsity Band may perform at UIL Contest, an invitational festival, and two or more concerts in the spring. Members of the Varsity Band cannot miss rehearsal within 7 days of performance for any reason other than school competition, illness, or emergency. The Varsity Band meets every-other day and does not require registration for Instrumental Ensemble. Performance Level IV is required for placement in a Varsity Band (see Minimum Skills Chart). Applied Music (grades 10-12) This is a state approved class for students to engage in independent study. Director approval is needed to take this class. A public performance is required for this class.

ATTENDANCE WORK SCHEDULES, FAMILY TRIPS, and other activities must not interfere with the rehearsal and performance schedule that you are given at the beginning of the school year. Students who enroll in other school activities such as athletics, choir, drama, etc. need to plan ahead to avoid conflicts that cannot be resolved. Ask to receive a complete semester calendar from all your activities so that you can have the maximum amount of time to work out potential schedule conflicts. The band directors will work together with the other teachers, coaches, and directors of various activities to give each student every opportunity to be a part of other groups. However, other groups, organizations, or businesses that may change schedules or make demands of students on short notice will not be allowed to interfere with long-scheduled rehearsals or performances of the band. Students who find themselves involved in such activities in addition to band may have to make a choice to drop one or the other if such conflicts arise. NON-SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES, TEAMS, ORGANIZATIONS, OR JOBS MUST NOT CONFLICT IN ANY WAY WITH THE PRACTICE & PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE OF THE BAND. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. The Duncanville Band is dependent on ALL its members. Unlike most other classes where individuals are accountable only for their own success or failure, band students' success is, in large part, dependent on the full participation of all the members. The following attendance policies will affect the students' grades and chance to participate: An unexcused absence from a rehearsal or performance may result in the removal of a student to a non-performing status. An unexcused absence from a major performance may also result in removal from band. During marching season, the first un-excused absence from a rehearsal or performance will result in that student being placed at the bottom of the alternate list. A second unexcused absence will result in that student becoming a permanent alternate. A third unexcused absence may result in dismissal from band and automatic enrollment in physical education. EXCUSES ARE ACCEPTED ONLY IN THE EVENT OF ILLNESS OR SERIOUS FAMILY EMERGENCY. PARENTAL CONTACT IS REQUIRED. GRADES In determining the band grade each nine weeks, two areas comprise the average: 1) Performance Grades - including class assignments, section rehearsal assignments, objectives, chair tests, and playoffs of performance music. 2) Participation Grades - including having music, instrument, and pencil at all rehearsals, correct marking of music, care and maintenance of instruments, punctuality to rehearsals and performances, and attendance at rehearsals and curricular performances. Instruments are to be taken home every day. If instruments are left in the band hall overnight without permission, the student's grade will be adversely affected.

ELIGIBILITY FOR CONCERT SEASON Most of the work that our students do outside of marching is considered curricular and NOT SUBJECT TO ELIGIBILITY. Free concerts, section rehearsals, concert rehearsals, and private lessons are all considered curricular. Events that are considered extra-curricular include: 1) Any event with paid admission. 2) Any event that is inter-school competitive Should a band student become ineligible for extra-curricular functions, he/she will still be eligible for curricular functions. Ineligible students will be given alternate assignments during contest preparation time. Should a student become ineligible for UIL Contest in the spring, he/she will not travel with the band for festival competition, regardless of eligibility at that time. DISCIPLINE Discipline is a quality that must come from within the individual. Because of this fact, each student is responsible for his or her own actions as a member of the DHS Band. Any student who shows an inability to work effectively in class may be re-assigned to another class at the discretion of the band director. As a school group, the band is governed by School and School Board policies anytime we are together for any band function whether it involves all students or only one. The general release form you sign at the end of this handbook will be in effect throughout the year for trips related to the band. Any student who violates school rules while with the DHS Band will be subject to all usual school disciplinary procedures. In addition, those students will be subject to dismissal and will not continue to perform or travel with the band. Also, students who receive assignment to the "Summit" School for disciplinary action outside of band activities will not perform with the band in any extra-curricular function for the remainder of the semester. LETTERING A lettering award will be presented to any Band student who fulfills the following three criteria: 1) Tries out for All-Region Band. If a student makes the All-Region Band, they must fulfill all rehearsal and performance requirements for these groups. and in the same year 2) Earns a First or Second Division on a Class I memorized solo; or Earns a First or Second Division on a non-memorized Class I solo from the State Qualifying list; or Earns a First Division on a non-memorized Class I or II solo, or Earns a First Division on a Class I ensemble (if a solo is also performed), and in the same year: 3) Completes: the full season of Marching Band including pre-school practices; playoff games; and all other rehearsals and performances. Students who are unable to perform due to ineligibility will not letter. The first year award is a jacket and subsequent years are extra bars to add to their letter. Students may receive only one jacket award from the school during the four years in all school activities combined.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS The ultimate goal of our program is the development of the individual musician to the limits of his/her potential. To assist in reaching this goal, we strongly recommend participation in the individual competitions and festivals offered throughout the year. All-Region Band tryout involves the finest students from schools in our region and is the first step in advancement toward All-State. All students in grades 9-12 may participate if academically eligible. The music is announced in August and the tryouts are in December. Students must check their calendars carefully and make a complete commitment to both the tryouts and the performance before entering. Solo-Ensemble competition takes place in late February or early March and results in noncompetitive ratings and medals. All students in grades 9-12 may participate if academically eligible. Unlike middle school solo-ensemble, the high school level is governed by the University Interscholastic League and maintains very specific music lists and rules for performance. Students must perform a solo in order to perform in an ensemble and receive lettering credit. The UIL limits participation to two different events. Students are responsible for their own accompanists, if needed. The Duncanville Concerto Competition is held in the spring and open to all students who earn a 1 st division at the UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest qualify at the region level. Students have the opportunity to earn scholarships from the Duncanville Band Boosters through this competition. Please read the "PARENTS GUIDE TO COMPETITION" on the band website. Band is not a club. However, student leaders are elected and selected by tryout to fill certain roles necessary for the success of band performances. Drum Majors are selected by tryout in the spring and must meet the following requirements to tryout: 1) Must be academically eligible at the time of tryouts. 2) Must be an upcoming junior or senior. 3) Must have earned a place in Honors Band or Wind Ensemble. 4) Must have online teacher recommendations completed at the time of tryouts. Squad Leaders are selected by tryout in the spring and must meet the following requirements to tryout: 1) Must be academically eligible at the time of tryouts. 2) May be a member of any of the concert bands. 3) Must be an upcoming junior or senior 4) Must have online teacher recommendations completed at the time of tryouts. Band Officers are elected by majority vote of all band members grades Band officers may come from any of the four concert bands and must be rising 10 th -12 th graders (with the exception of President, Vice-President, and Secretary-Treasurer, which must be 11 th -12 th graders). The following offices will comprise the Band Council: President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, Librarian, Uniform Manager, Reporter-Historian, Class Representatives, Drum Majors (from tryouts).

ALL STUDENT LEADERS WHO ARE ELECTED AND SELECTED BY TRYOUT MUST FULFILL THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS TO REMAIN IN THEIR OFFICES: 1) Provide leadership through example; promote the highest expectations for band members; and show a zero tolerance for negative behavior. Band Officers with any disciplinary referral in any class will be removed from office. 2) Remain academically eligible throughout the year. Ineligibility at any time will result in removal from office. Students must be academically eligible at the time of elections. 3) Help organize and perform in the July 4th Parade (exception for conflict with summer music camp or Scout/religious camp). 4) Attend ALL summer practices, meetings, and have no unexcused absences from band activities during the year. Drum majors and Band Council may only miss summer band practices with an excused absence (illness or family emergency). 5) Tryout for All-Region Band. 6) Play a solo at the Region UIL contest. SUPPLIES All instrument cases and stick bags need to be clearly labeled with the student s name. You will need the following supplies/accessories for your instrument: Brass: valve oil; slide grease. Woodwinds: Cleaning cloth, swabs, 6 or more good reeds (Vandoren) Percussion: Snare sticks, timpani mallets, 2 pair of marimba mallets, xylophone mallets, pitch pipe, metronome, and stick bag (all brands and types will be specified later in a separate letter). UNIFORMS MARCHING The uniform of the DHS Band are worn at most outdoor functions unless weather prohibits. These are issued to all students who pass the fundamentals and music test in summer band. Students who do not properly take care of their uniform may be required to re-earn their uniform. In addition, each student needs the following items to complete the uniform: 1) White Marching Shoes - ordered in August through Tote Unlimited 2) All white socks socks must come up to calf 3) Band Show T-Shirt - ordered through the Band, $12.50 for a $25 total 4) White T-Shirt we will wear a basic white t-shirt for all rehearsals 5) Black Gloves issued at the time of uniform check-out, $5 will be charge to Charms Cleaning is to be done by a reputable cleaner at the parents' discretion. No less than every 2 nd performance. The removable chest shield of the uniform is not to be cleaned at any time. Uniforms will be issued to students upon successful completion of their fundamental marching objectives.

UNIFORMS cont. CONCERT Students in the Wind Ensemble, Honors, Symphonic, Concert and Varsity Bands will perform in formal concert clothes at all home concerts and at contests and festivals. Boys A limited number of tuxes will be issued on a first come, first serve basis. Many boys will want to buy their own tuxedos. All boys must supply the following: 1) A white tux shirt with wing collar. 2) Medium (2") black bow-tie. 3) Black dress shoes and all black dress socks Girls will order black formals from a designated supplier. The cost will be approximately $100 (plus shipping). Each girl will need to furnish black shoes, heel of your choice, with the length of the dress adjusted to formal length with the shoes on. APPLIED PRIVATE INSTRUCTION For over 30 years, the Duncanville Band Program has offered private instruction from the finest graduate and professional musicians in the Dallas area. This program is supported by the individual parents who cover the cost of the program. Lessons may be taken during band class or after school. Lessons during class time may be slightly shorter than lessons taken after school. The DISD approves certain private instructors through auditions and interviews and the list may be found at: The Applied Instructors will assist students with the preparation of music for All-Region, Area, and State tryouts; for participation in Solo-Ensemble; and with occasional parts of the band performance music. Teachers will include an organized lesson plan of fundamentals that will need to be practiced consistently in order to receive the greatest benefits from private instruction. Parents should become informed about the lesson content, expectations of the teacher, and their student's rate of progress. Parents should contact their own campus band director with questions about lessons or private teachers. Private Instruction is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each student's potential as a performing musician. IT IS NOT REQUIRED and students' places in band and their band grades are not judged by participation in private lessons. USE OF SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS A limited number of the more expensive instruments are owned by the DISD for the purpose of balancing the instrumentation district-wide and maintaining performing bands at every level. There is a yearly insurance fee of $125 for each student playing a school-owned instrument. Percussionists will be required to pay a $50 fee for the year. This fee purchases insurance that will cover maintenance, repairs, and/or replacement if damaged beyond repair. A checkout form will be sent home for parent/guardian signature each spring which describes the condition of the instrument at that time. It is the responsibility of the student/parent to check over the instrument at that time and understand that the instrument must be returned in the same condition at the end of the year. If repairs are necessary during the year, it is the responsibility of the student/parent to deliver the instrument to a repair facility as instructed by the BAND DIRECTOR. If, in the opinion of a DISD director, a school-owned instrument is not being properly maintained or cared for at any time of the school year, it is the director's prerogative to remove the instrument from the student's care.

RECOMMENDED INSTRUMENT LIST We recommend that students not continue to use their "beginner" instruments past the 8th-grade, unless an advanced model was purchased initially. Better quality instruments enable all students to learn more quickly and with greater ease. The instruments listed below are recommended by the DISD staff as the best quality: Flute - Miyazawa BR-402, Muramatsu EX, Yamaha 600 Series Clarinet - Buffet R-13 Alto Sax - Yamaha Pro Model or Selmer SA-80 Trumpet - Bach Stradivarius 180-S, Yamaha YTR Xeno Series Trombone - Bach 42-BO These can be purchased at many retail stores. These "pro-model" instruments are often heavily discounted for cash purchases. Parents are encouraged to seek the help of a private instructor or director before purchasing one of these instruments. STUDENT FUNDRAISING Fundraising is done by individual students with profits deposited into the individual's "account." This account is part of the band activity fund at the high school and handled through an accountant furnished by the district. The student accounts are intended to help students and parents defray the costs of travel associated with the band such as festivals and non-uil contests. The accounts are updated and posted at the high school at regular intervals during the year. Parents with questions about their student's account may Liz Musquiz at: EMusquiz@duncanvilleisd.org The Duncanville Band Program uses the Charms Office Assistant to manage our student information and band account activities. Students and parents may log into Charms to view and update contact information as well as view your individual band account. In addition, you may make payments for trips and fees by credit or debit card through PayPal. Instructions for logging into Charms may be found on the band website. Students will have the opportunity to raise money through stadium clean-ups and other fundraisers throughout the year. There will be an optional band trip in the spring. The details have not been finalized at this time; however, students and parents are highly encouraged to follow the pay schedule in a timely manner once the trip price has been established. Payments must be made at designated due date in order to participate in this optional trip. There are no exceptions to this. All participation in fundraising is optional and only offered as an opportunity for those who want the financial help. Parents may pay directly for trip costs as they arise.

DUNCANVILLE BAND BOOSTERS The Duncanville Band Boosters Association provides up to 40% of the curricular budget of the Duncanville Band Program. They earn these funds primarily through the operation of concessions at most Duncanville ISD athletic events. The Booster concession operations are run with the volunteer help of hundreds of people throughout the year. A volunteer sheet is included in this handbook. Please return with the other handbook forms. IN ORDER TO AVOID A BAND FEE FOR EVERY STUDENT, PARENTS ARE EXPECTED TO VOLUNTEER FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 EVENTS PER SEMESTER FOR A TOTAL OF 4 EVENTS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR. Check the Duncanville Band Booster web page for volunteer opportunities. Booster funds are used to provide extra instruments, music, equipment, supplies, programs, and enrichment at ALL of the DISD schools where band is taught. Band Booster funds are NOT used to pay for student trips even though the Boosters will sponsor special fundraisers to allow individual students to raise travel funds. In the past four decades, the Duncanville Band Program has become recognized as one of the outstanding music programs in the nation. The tradition associated with this success has grown and flourished with the school and community because of the dedicated work of many individuals. While the musical understanding and achievement of each student is our primary goal, it is the commitment of all our band members to each other that has allowed our program to achieve its unique position. "Pride Makes the Difference" has been our motto for over 30 years and it is a meaningful statement of the feelings our members have toward the group and toward each other. As you sign the commitment form at the end of this handbook, understand that this is a FULL YEAR commitment and that our expectations for ourselves and each other are very high.

Duncanville Band Boosters Band Booster members include band directors, parents and other supporters of Duncanville s outstanding instrumental music program. We support the band program in two important ways: first, Boosters provide adult supervision for student performances, contests, and trips; and second, Boosters raise money. Band Booster funds provide many necessary items to all Duncanville music students in all grade levels, including school owned instruments such as bass clarinets, bassoons, harmony saxophones, French Horns, mellophones, euphoniums, sousaphones, and percussion, uniforms, music, and private lessons financial assistance for students who otherwise couldn t afford them. Many of our surrounding city band programs require a fee of at least $1000 to be a band member. But, with your support, we music and band program can remain a no-fee program to our band students. The concessions profit is the main support of the Band Boosters' budget. If we do not have parents to volunteer at the concessions during events, this will result in more out-of-pocket band expenses for the parents. The success of the Boosters is extremely important to the continued success of our band program. We need each and every one of you in the upcoming year to make this our most successful year ever! Believe it or not, your child DOES want your involvement in his/her life. We can offer you this small window of opportunity to be involved. Your child will appreciate your involvement and so will the band directors. IN ORDER TO AVOID A BAND FEE FOR EVERY STUDENT, PARENTS ARE EXPECTED TO VOLUNTEER FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 EVENTS PER SEMESTER FOR A TOTAL OF ONLY 4 EVENTS FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR. This includes Volleyball, Football, and Basketball, Track, DMI and any other special events where we need volunteers and provide concessions. WE NEED YOUR HELP. All band families will be contacted from time to time and asked to help in some way. We often use s as much as possible to reach everyone. Please provide us with an address where you can be reached.
