1 A Newsletter of the New Jersey Choral Consortium Vol. 6, No. 4 March 21, 2016 Consortium Calendar Saturday, April 2, 2016, 11am- 1pm Meeting of the Board of Directors of NJCC will be held at Renaissance at Raritan, 1 Renaissance Blvd., Franklin Township. Board, Officers Elected at Annual Meeting NJCC members attending the Annual Meeting on February 27 approved the slate of officers and at- large members of the NJCC board as recommended by the Nominating Committee, chaired by Rhoda Wolin. Marina Alexander was elected president, George Steward vice president, Ruth Anderman secretary, and Kathy Hannan treasurer. Elected also were at- large board members Laura Babcock, Trish DeMallie, Jane Schrader, and Rhoda Wolin. Retiring from the board were Erwin Petri and Steven Russell NJCC thanks them for their service. Marina Alexander with Jim Cummings Workshops on Donor Acquisition, Vocal Production Boost Choruses and Singers The New Jersey Choral Consortium recented hosted two workshops for its members: the first, as part of the NJCC s Annual Meeting at the Reformed Church of Highland Park on February 27, featured guest speaker and nonprofit consultant Jim Cummings of Jim Cummings and Associates. Jim spoke on fundraising basics with a special emphasis on donor acquisition and retention. All the people at the meeting took away valuable ideas for increasing the effectiveness of their chorus s fundraising efforts. Another workshop took place at the Reformed Church of Highland Park on Saturday, March 12. At that presentation, Martin Sedek, music director of the Choral Art Society of NJ, composer, and assistant professor of music at Montclair State University offered a fascinating workshop on voice production as affected by body mechanics. Marty used audio-visual materials to demonstrate how the human body uses body structure, posture, and the vocal folds to produce the complex act of singing. The New Jersey Choral Consortium is seeking to increase the effectiveness of its communications through all platforms we use through our s, our newsletters, our website and other online social media, such as Facebook. By doing so, we will help both New Jersey singers and chorus management know more about our services and will let New Jersey audiences know more about all the choral offerings available in the Garden State. For those measures to succeed, we need your help! 1. NJCC wants to make sure that our communications get distributed to everyone in every member chorus, and we fear that some communications are not being disseminated, -- or even read! Would all people who identified themselves as being the main contact for their chorus please distribute newsletters, flyers and other information to everyone in their chorus? 2. Would you please appoint a chorus representative to be sure your chorus information gets to us? You can upload your concert information on our website in a Concert Submission form found under Concert Schedules at 3. Be sure that your chorus Likes the New Jersey Choral Consortium on Facebook. We have started putting up information on Facebook about choral offerings available throughout the state, but you will only know if you get our Facebook feed. 4. IMPORTANT: Please make sure the description and information about your chorus is current? We need to know if you have changed your music director, your location, and any other major changes to your organization. Our information is several years old. 5. 3 Classified Ad The New Jersey Choral Consortium is seeking volunteers who can help with advancing some of the initiatives we work to provide our member organizations. At the Annual Meeting, we asked for volunteers to work on committees and a few people indicated they would be willing to help. Thank you! We would like more volunteers in that way, no one person will be inundated with too much to do for the organization. A few hours of your time is what we are looking for. Help is needed in the following areas: Membership (including member recruitment) Regional Representatives, to organize meetings for Northeast Jersey (Bergen and Union Counties; Morris- Essex- Union Counties; Central Jersey, including Shore towns; and Southern NJ (Princeton, Trenton and South). We can avoid duplicating dates and repertoire if we are able to talk before a season gets underway. Workshops Communications (including Website, Facebook, Newsletters, and Flyers) Data Management (We need one list of all participants at events over the course of the NJCC existence. The lists exist, just not in similar shapes, and we need someone comfortable with data management.)
