2 CANTERBURY S 2016 Reflecting on JANUARY: Canterbury changes its name & logo! FEBRUARY: Canterbury redesigns its website! MAY: Pam Mowry is hired as executive director of Canterbury Voices! JUNE: Canterbury Voices hires Steven Ziegler as Conductor of the Canterbury Youth Voices Central Chorale! JULY: Canterbury moves its offices to the Arts District! OCTOBER: Canterbury Voices performs the WORLD PREMIERE of a newly commissioned work by Oklahoma native and Chickasaw composer, Jerod Impichchaachaaha Tate!
3 Photo provided by CANTERBURY YOUTH VOICES The Canterbury Youth Voices (CYV) education season launched with an Informance Concert in October. The Central choirs (Oklahoma City University) performing at OCU and the Moore choirs performing at Capitol Hill Baptist Church. All CYV choirs performed their annual Holiday concert at OCU in December. All CYV choirs will perform their final concert of the education season at OCU April 29th. Selected singers from both youth choir sites had the opportunity to perform the National Anthem at Thunder basketball games in the month of November. The Central Choirs sang on November 5th and the Moore Choirs sang on November 20th. In October, students of the Central Chorale (grades 7-12) performed on Civic Center stage alongside Canterbury s adult chorus and the OKC Philharmonic for the world premiere of Misha Sipokni. This piece is sung in the Chickasaw language.
4 Canterbury s next concert: ISRAEL IN EGYPT Handel s Israel in Egypt, dramatizes the biblical story of Moses. This oratorio by Handel is full of word painting where the sound of the music imitates the text imagery. The plagues, especially, inspired Handel to create some of his most colorful painting one can easily hear the hopping of the frogs, the buzzing of the flies, the pounding of the fiery hail, and the eerie darkness. Israel in Egypt is unique in its abundance of choruses and double choruses, and now stands second only to Messiah as Handel s most beloved work.
