They will range in age from little pre-schoolers to adults completing tertiary study and vying for the big prizes in the Vocal and Piano competitions. You can enjoy the Norah Howell Awards at the University of Waikato, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts over the weekend of: 14 th & 15 th July In selected disciplines, young people will compete for the opportunity to represent the Waikato at the National Young Performer of the Year Awards (PACANZ). 7 Vocal and Piano Awards Each year the Hamilton Competitions Society receives a significant sum of money from the Norah Howell Trust. Norah Howell was born in Hamilton in 1906 and died in She had a lifelong interest in music and gardening and a strong social conscience. Norah grew up in the Waikato and Auckland and attended the Sydney Conservatorium where she studied violin and piano. Norah s husband, Cedric, was killed during WWII and Norah then used her musical gifts to support herself and her two sons. She performed as a soloist and employed her superb accompanying skills to support vocalists and instrumentalists. In her later years she established the Norah Howell Trust which has provided financial support to a number of tertiary students at different Universities and to the Hamilton Competitions Society. We greatly appreciate the trustees on-going support of our young performers. Thank you, Norah Howell.
