1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 17, 2014 NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Christoph Eschenbach, Music Director Announces its June Schedule of Performances Christoph Eschenbach Conducts Final Two Weeks Of Classical Subscription Season NSO Returns to Wolf Trap Pops Series Wraps Up with Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke and The Midtown Men New in This Release Bruckner Motets Young Soloists Concert Ben Folds with the NSO at Wolf Trap Three Chamber Music Performances Kennedy Center Chamber Players NSO Sound Health Millennium Stage (WASHINGTON, D.C.) The NSO s June performance schedule is brimming with variety: the last two weeks of classical subscription concerts, Family Concerts, an Organ Postlude, Ben Folds as well as Pixar in Concert at Wolf Trap, and the closing concerts of the NSO Pops with the Midtown Men. Chamber music performances include a Kennedy Center Chamber Players program, as well as an ensemble performing at the National Institutes of Health as part of the NSO s ongoing Sound Health community engagement program.
2 Two Weeks of Concerts with Music Director Christoph Eschenbach: Maestro Eschenbach returns to the NSO with not one, but two, guest artists: outstanding violinist Nicola Benedetti, who has previously appeared with the NSO at Wolf Trap, and cellist Leonard Elschenbroich, who makes his NSO debut. They will be featured in Brahms s Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. The program also includes Tchaikovsky s heartwrenching Symphony No. 6, Pathétique. Performances take place June 5-7, 2014, in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. With the final subscription program of the classical season, Maestro Eschenbach continues his exploration of the masterful symphonic works of Anton Bruckner. To precede the Symphony No. 8, Maestro Eschenbach has chosen to present a very different facet of Bruckner s gifts, a cappella religious vocal works. The University of Maryland Chamber Singers, Edward Maclary, director, will perform the Motets Locus iste, Christus factus est, Virga Jesse, and Ave Maria. Performances take place June 12-14, 2014, in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. Two Performances at Wolf Trap: The NSO has made Wolf Trap, in the rolling hills of the Virginia countryside, its summer home since the 1971 opening of the country s only national park for the performing arts. This summer, the NSO concerts open June 20 with Pixar in Concert. From the Toy Story trilogy to The Incredibles and UP, Pixar has had a dramatic impact on filmmaking and given audiences of all ages some of the most beloved characters in cinematic history. Visually stunning clips will be screened, both in the house and on the lawn, along with the memorable scores from each Disney/Pixar movie with NSO at Wolf Trap Festival Conductor Emil de Cou leading the orchestra. Pixar in Concert Disney/Pixar. New to the Wolf Trap schedule is Ben Folds. His first performance with the NSO in 2009 was sold out, and his appearance at the Kennedy Center s American Voices in 2013 was a hit. Now he appears with the NSO at Wolf Trap in The Ben Folds Orchestra Experience, with the Washington premiere of his own Piano Concerto. The performance is scheduled for June 25, and will be led by Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke. Free Performance Featuring Winners of the NSO s Young Soloists Competition: NSO Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl will lead a performance featuring three recent winners of the NSO s Young Soloists Competition and an additional YoungArts* winner. This performance in the Concert Hall is a free Millennium Stage event. Repertoire by Sibelius, Elgar, Barber, and Dvořák will showcase the talents of violinist Rhea Chung, cellist Daniel Tavani, pianist Nicholas Biniaz-Harris, and cellist Peter Eom. As with all Millennium Stage presentations, no tickets are required. Final Program of Pops Series at the Kennedy Center: The NSO moves back to the Kennedy Center to close out the richly varied series of NSO Pops. Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke will conduct as The Midtown Men, four original stars of Jersey Boys, bring the trademark sounds, choreography and chemistry that took Broadway by storm to the grand finale of the NSO Pops season. *Through its partnership with National YoungArts Foundation, the Kennedy Center provides career development and performance opportunities for gifted YoungArts participants in multiple disciplines.
3 NSO Chamber Music Events: Three NSO musician chamber programs are scheduled this month. The Kennedy Center Chamber Players give their final concert of the season in the Terrace Theater on June 1, NSO members perform on the Millennium Stage June 11, and a string trio performs at the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health on June 17.
