1 FLY AWAY PETER Festival of Music in Geelong s Churches, 2015, commemorating THE CENTENARY OF WORLD WAR ONE AND ANZAC OPENING CONCERT IN REMEMBRANCE FRIDAY, 1 st MAY, 8 PM St Mary of the Angels Basilica, Yarra Street, Geelong 136 Yarra Street, Geelong The commemoration of the Centenary of World War 1 leads us from Christopher Walker s Called to War to a tribute to the Christmas Truce of 1914 and into John Rutter s beautiful Requiem. This concert will feature many of Geelong s best artists, with music of Langlais, Gruber, Schubert, Morricone and Willcock. 2 2. SONGS FROM THE WAR SATURDAY, 2 nd MAY, 11 AM Pioneer Room, St Mary s Parish Centre 150 Yarra Street, Geelong Wendy Grose, soprano John Shawcross, piano We reflect on the ANZACS through song. Music has always had a strong role to play in bringing people together to share their feelings in times of happiness and grief, hope and suffering and in the celebration of peace. Music lifted spirits, brought words of comfort to the sad and lonely and provided some fun and relaxation as an escape from the reality of war. With John s lovely piano accompaniments, Wendy will perform a wonderful selection of songs that sprang out of World Wars 1 and PRAYER FOR PEACE SATURDAY, 2 nd MAY, 3PM St Paul s Anglican Church Latrobe Terrace, Geelong The Choir of St Paul s Cathedral, Melbourne, directed by Philip Nicholls. Young choristers and adult singers will make their third visit to Geelong as welcome guests of Music at the Basilica. They have sung at Christ Church and St Mary s in past years. This time they will be at St Paul s Church in Latrobe Terrace. The Choir will sing songs, prayers and anthems reflecting on the world s desire for peace and understanding. a long tradition of musical excellence since 1888

THE ARMED MAN A MASS FOR PEACE SATURDAY, 2 nd MAY, 5PM Wesley Uniting Church, 100 Yarra Street This powerful and dramatic work by Karl Jenkins is presented by The Geelong Chorale, director Allister Cox, with instrumental ensemble and alto soloist. This modern work creates the imagery of warfare in musical forms and many languages. It conveys messages of respect for the fallen, distress for human suffering, concern for the natural environment and all living creatures, and an earnest hope for future peace. LEST WE FORGET SATURDAY, 2 nd MAY, 8.00 PM Sacred Heart College Performing Arts Centre Aphrasia Street, Newtown World premiere of Song Cycle Doomed Youth by Roger Heagney, OAM, for soprano, Merlyn Quaife, AM, and piano, Andrea Katz. Based on poems by Wilfred Owen, John McCrae and Kenneth Slessor, the songs reflect on the courage and self-sacrifice that is expected of youth, and so freely given, in time of war. The tragic loss and deep grief suffered by families everywhere is remembered. Wilfred Owen died in battle in France in WW1 at the age of 25. John McCrae died in 1918, serving as an army surgeon in France. Kenneth Slessor was an Australian War Correspondent in WW2. Roger Heagney Merlyn Quaife Andrea Katz SUNDAY MASS 3 rd MAY, 9.30 AM, St Mary of the Angels Basilica,136 Yarra St The Choir of St Mary of the Angels Basilica, director Christopher Kelly, sings the new Mass for the Fallen by Australian composer Christopher Willcock, with motets, psalms and anthems. All are invited to attend and join in the singing of the hymns.

FLY AWAY PETER SUNDAY, 3 rd MAY, 1.30 PM Christ Church Moorabool/Mckillop Streets, Geelong The World Premiere of Fly Away Peter by Dr Malcolm John, OAM, is based on David Malouf s novel with the author s kind permission. In this work for strings, flute and narrators, the serenity of a coastal bird sanctuary is broken by a vague threat of distant war that becomes stark reality for one young Queensland man.
