Kia ora tātou It is a source of huge personal pleasure to me that our Music Up Close season embraces the very best of period instrument performance. Already in 2018, we ve had exquisite viol playing from Phantasm and now we welcome Ensemble Zefiro on their first New Zealand tour. Ensemble Zefiro are the best in the world at what they do performing the wind music of Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Fasch and Telemann on the instruments for which it was written (rather than their modern-era equivalents). This really is quite special. I expect that the timbre and the expressiveness of these instruments will enchant our audiences. I have greatly enjoyed Ensemble Zefiro s recordings and so look forward now to hearing Alfredo Bernadini and his colleagues live. We are grateful to the Southern Trust for their support with this tour. And particular thanks to H.E. Mr Fabrizio Marcelli, the Italian Ambassador to New Zealand for his generous assistance. Ngā mihi nui cordialmente! Peter Walls ONZM Chief Executive Music Up Close Puoro Taupiri Chamber Music New Zealand Please respect the music, the musicians, and your fellow audience members, by switching off all cellphones, pagers and watches. Taking photographs, or sound or video recordings during the concert is strictly prohibited unless with the prior approval of Chamber Music New Zealand.

Ensemble Zefiro 3 Ensemble Zefiro Alfredo Bernardini Oboe Paolo Grazzi Oboe Dileno Baldin Horn Francesco Meucci Horn Alberto Grazzi Bassoon Giorgio Mandolesi Bassoon According to Greek mythology, Zefiro was the tender and kind God of the Western Wind. In 1989, the oboists Alfredo Bernardini and Paolo Grazzi, and the bassoonist Alberto Grazzi members of some of Europe s top Baroque orchestras founded Zefiro, a versatile music group specialising in the eighteenth-century repertoire which gives prominence to wind instruments. Since then, Zefiro has performed at many major European festivals, and abroad in Israel, Egypt, Japan, Korea, USA, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil receiving enthusiastic responses from both audiences and media. Zefiro s recordings include the six Sonatas for two oboes and bassoon by Jan Dismas Zelenka, Mozart s complete works for wind ensemble, their own arrangements of excerpts from three Mozart operas, Vivaldi s Concerti per vari strumenti, while its recording of Handel s Water Music and Telemann s Wassermusik has established Zefiro's reputation as a leading Baroque orchestra. The ensemble has also

4 Chamber Music New Zealand...bubbled with vibrant energy... [a] buoyant, colorful performance. ~The New York Times ZEFIRO FOUNDERS ALFREDO BERNARDINI Baroque oboe performed work from two unfamiliar yet remarkable composers of the late eighteenth century: Georg Druschetzky and Luigi Gattiand to much acclaim. Their recordings have received several international awards, including the coveted Grand Prix du Disque, the Premio Nazionale Classic Voice and the Editor s Choice by Gramophone. Zefiro is now a reference worldwide famed for its virtuoso performances of the wind repertoire on period instruments. In 1999 Zefiro created a documentary-film on Antonio Vivaldi for the Belgian broadcasting company RTBF. Born in Rome in 1961, Alfredo Bernardini moved to The Netherlands in 1981 to specialise in Baroque oboe and early music with, among others Bruce Haynes and Ku Ebbinge. In 1987 he received his soloist diploma from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and in 1989 he founded the ensemble Zefiro together with the brothers Paolo and Alberto Grazzi. Alfredo has performed all over Europe, Russia, U.S.A., Canada, Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Egypt, Israel, South America and Australia as a member of prestigious Baroque ensembles such as Hesperion XX, The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, The English Concert and Bach Collegium Japan. He has played in more than 100 recordings, and his recordings with Zefiro have won honours with such awards as the Cannes Classical Award and the Diapason d Or de l Année 2009.

Ensemble Zefiro 5 PAOLO GRAZZI Baroque oboe ALBERTO GRAZZI Baroque bassoon After obtaining the Diploma in Oboe from the Parma Conservatory at the age of 17, Paolo Grazzi undertook the study of the Baroque oboe, first by himself and later with Paul Dombrecht at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In 1981 he obtained the Premier Prix with distinction from the same Conservatory in both oboe and Baroque oboe, and very soon became an authority on this instrument, both as a performer and a teacher. His appointment as Baroque oboe teacher at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan was the first of its kind in Italy and many players graduated under his guidance and now play in orchestras all over Europe. Besides being much in demand as a performer, Paolo devotes himself to researching oboes from the 18th century and teaching at the Conservatory of Verona. Recently appointed co-principal bassoon with Concentus Musicus Wien, Alberto Grazzi has been an active player on the early music scene for the last 25 years. After his studies in Reggio Emilia in Milan and collaborations with the radio orchestra in Italy and Switzerland, he was selected to form the European Baroque Orchestra. In 1987 he became a member of Il Giardino Armonico for ten years and in 1990 was appointed principal bassoon of The English Concert a position he still enjoys today. Alberto has been a Baroque bassoon teacher at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan, the Conservatorio di Musica in Verona and tours extensively around the world as both an orchestral player and soloist.

6 Chamber Music New Zealand Mozart s Divertimenti During the summer months, if the weather is fine, one comes almost daily across serenades performed in the streets [of Vienna]... However, these do not, as in Italy or Spain, consist simply of a singer accompanied by a guitar or mandora... Here serenades are not a means of declaring one s love, for which there are a thousand more comfortable opportunities; but the serenades consist of trios, quartets, mostly from operas... played by wind instruments... However late at night they may be played... one soon notices people in the windows, and within a matter of minutes the musicians are surrounded by an applauding crowd. Vienna Theatre Almanac, 1794 When, in 1781, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart took the bold step of moving to Vienna to commence his career as a freelance musician, he found himself in a city that was something of a paradise for wind instruments for performers, composers and listeners alike. Open-air concerts to which winds were particularly well suited abounded during the summer months, while serenades and divertimenti as well as other popular genres intended for lighter entertainment were composed in large quantities for performance at social gatherings both indoors and out. The high standard of wind performance in the Austrian capital was due in large part to the significant number of Bohemian musicians who found employment there. As the Englishman Charles Burney noted, I had frequently been told that the Bohemians were the most musical people of Germany, or, perhaps, of all Europe. It was not, however, until Burney visited Bohemia (today, the Czech Republic) himself, in 1772, that he came to realise the true cause of this apparently innate talent: I found out at length, that, not only in every large town, but in all villages, where there is a reading and writing school, children of both sexes are taught music.

Ensemble Zefiro 7 When he called in on the school in the town of Čáslav in central Bohemia, Burney found it full of little children of both sexes, from six to ten or eleven years old, who were reading, writing, playing on violins, oboes, bassoons and other instruments. The year after Mozart escaped the confining environment of the Salzburg court for the imperial capital Vienna, in 1782, Emperor Joseph II founded his own Harmoniemusik ensemble. This comprised the best available performers on the oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon all of whom also held positions in the opera orchestra based at Vienna s chief theatrical venue, the Burgtheater. The Emperor s move was soon imitated by many of the leading Austrian aristocracy, including Prince Esterházy and Prince Liechtenstein, who both employed their own Harmonien based on the imperial model. Such ensembles were chiefly used to provide entertainment at garden parties, dinner music, or at other social events that required background music. Harmonien are also known to have performed in both private and public concerts, where they occasionally accompanied a soloist. A key component of their repertoire was arrangements of popular operas of the day, a phenomenon in which Mozart found himself directly involved in the middle of As he explained in a letter to his father, Leopold, on 20 July: Well, I have a big piece of work in front of me because I have to arrange my opera [Die Entführung aus dem Serail] for Harmonie by a week from Sunday. If I don t, someone else will beat me to it and take my profit... You don t realise how hard it is to arrange a work of this kind for Harmonie so that it suits wind instruments and yet loses none of its effect. I ll have to spend the night over it because that s what it takes to bring it off. Mozart s Singspiel had premiered only a matter of days earlier, on 16 July 1782, at the

8 Chamber Music New Zealand Breathing new life into this well-worn music, Ensemble Zefiro, directed by oboist Alfredo Bernardini, characterised the changing movements with real Italian gusto. ~Early Music Todays Burgtheater, and we know that there was indeed considerable demand for arrangements of this work, since at least three contemporary transcriptions for wind octet have survived. One of these was made by the Bohemian oboist Johann (Jan) Nepomuk Went ( ), who was a member of the imperial Harmonie and had no doubt played in the opera orchestra during the work s opening season. Strikingly, Went made arrangements of more than fifty opera and ballet scores for Harmonie and was in charge of the imperial s ensemble repertory for close to twenty years. The five divertimenti by Mozart on tonight s programme are all scored for pairs of oboes, horns and bassoons and were written between July 1775 and January 1777, while the composer was still living in Salzburg. Unlike the imperial Harmonie established a few years later in Vienna, the orchestra at the Salzburg court of Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo was yet to adopt the clarinet a fact much regretted by Mozart, who wrote to his father from Mannheim on 3 December 1778: Ah, if only we too had clarinets. You can t imagine what a splendid effect a symphony makes with flute, oboes and clarinets. Probably originally forming a set of six divertimenti (with one now lost), these works were no doubt intended for performance as Tafelmusik for Colloredo, since the regular private concerts he hosted were generally more serious in tone, featuring symphonies, arias and concertos. Generally opening with an Allegro movement in sonata form, the Divertimento in F major (K. 253) departs from that model and starts with a theme and variations movement, while that in E-flat major (K. 252) begins with a gracious Andante.

11 Chamber Music New Zealand Photo: Aja Lethaby HEATH QUARTET & OUTREACH Music provides the emotional toolbox we need to endure life's journey. Our children need it, and so do you. Chamber Music New Zealand brought Heath Quartet to Aotearoa last June, helping Kiwi kids unlock that toolbox and spark a life-long love of chamber music. Lower-decile schools in Porirua and Lower Hutt and students in Dunedin were treated to a concert with Heath and Chris Lam Sam, and kids in Sistema Aotearoa enjoyed a workshop in Otara with the quartet. Our parents have complex lives with many having no transport, second jobs and large families to look after we had kids in pjs, babies, our older citizens all engrossed. It was quite special. - Ros Giffney, Director of Sistema Aotearoa. If there is a role for music, it is in opening channels of feeling that have become confounded by the demands of daily life and is just as important for our school kids as it is for ordinary Kiwis. That is why your support at Chamber Music New Zealand is so important. With your help, we are able to bring world-class ensembles such as Heath Quartet to those who wouldn t ordinarily have access to them, providing those experiences which help unlock the emotional toolbox all Kiwis need to navigate through life. Please help realise the musical ambitions of young New Zealanders by giving to CMNZ s Annual Appeal. Visit: chambermusic.co.nz/donate Phone: encore@chambermusic.co.nz
