2 About the Music Visions of Xi Hu is a suite of three movements that was insired by reading about the various sites around the famed lake XI Hu in Hangzhou, China, a site I ve been honored to visit. These locations have beautifully oetic names that highlight the characteristics of the surrounding environment. Each name insired one of the three movements of original melodies. I. Three Pools Mirroring the Moon is based on the five-tone entatonic mode heard in much of Oriental music. It suggests staring into the calm water during a moonlit night and feeling a sense of bliss from viewing the lovely reflections. II. Island of Little Oceans is also based on the entatonic mode. It s a simle melody stated by four different combinations of instruments. The mood suggests being on the island and being aware of all tension leaving one s body from being surrounded by the eaceful waters. III. Two Peaks Embracing the Sky is a dramatic and forceful work, very ercussive and loud. It oens with the brass stating a series of six major chords (the first eak), each rogressively a fifth higher than the revious one. (For examle: C-G-D-A-E in the Western system of tonality.) The woodwinds then lay six minor chords (the second eak) based on the same itches. This give-and-take between the sections of the band builds u to a climax of intense ower. Visions of Xi Hu is dedicated to Jianyun Meng. About the Comoser Michael Boo is a former band director, a rofessional creative writer and the Staff Writer for Drum Cors International. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music and a Master of Music degree from Northern Illinois University with a major in music comosition and theory. He is also a church handbell choir director and an assistant director of a community band in northwest Indiana.
