4 Pianist Sasha Starcevich is currently enjoying a rewarding career as an international performer and teacher with his engaging performances and passionate teaching, both at home and around the globe. As a recitalist, he has appeared in many renowned venues such as New York s Carnegie Recital Hall, Moscow s Tchaikovsky Hall and in London s Wigmore Hall. His debut recital there was met with critical acclaim, and a review in the Musical Opinion stated: The repertoire was brilliantly conceived; a thoroughly enjoyable recital at every level. He has continued to thrill audiences with concerto appearances, chamber and solo recitals throughout North America, Europe and Asia. The past two decades have seen Starcevich tour Russia with the Samara Philharmonic Orchestra, appear at the Holders Season, Barbados and the Henley Festival in England and release several solo and concerto recordings in the United States and England. His principal teachers have included Ilana Vered, Peter Frankl, Claude Frank, Boris Berman, Jane Allen and Donna Fishwick. His Doctoral and post-graduate degrees are from Yale University, and his undergraduate degree is from the Saint Louis Conservatory. In addition, Starcevich has worked with Dimitri Bashkirov at the Gnessin School in Moscow and with many other world renowned artists. He has been affiliate professor of piano at the State University of New York- Purchase and Department Chair of Music and professor of piano at the South Carolina Governor s School for the Arts. He has maintained highly successful private studios in New York City, New Canaan, Connecticut and Vancouver, Canada. Currently, he has an extremely active and internationally recognized studio in Bellevue, Washington and is Artistic Director at the Showcase Piano Academy in Vancouver. In August of 2011, he joined the faculty of Musicfest Perugia in Italy. In conjunction with coartistic director Ilana Vered, the festival has grown to be the largest event of its kind for young musicians in Italy. Additional appointments include serving on juries for international competitions in North America, and faculty appointments to several noted festivals in the United States and Canada. Recently he has given many highly successful lectures, master classes and public teaching sessions in Asia and the United States and is in great demand for further engagements. His students have established themselves as grand prize winners in national and international piano competitions; his past students have gone on to pursue serious study at the world s most renowned musical institutions such as the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute, Peabody Conservatory, the Yale School of Music and England s Royal Academy of Music. Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), Nicholas Wright is a native of England. His engagements as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician have taken him to most of the major concert halls in Europe, Asia and North America. He has performed with international orchestras such as the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Oman Symphony and the VSO. His varied repertoire includes premieres by Kelly-Marie Murphy and Jocelyn Morlock, whose works he recently recorded for the Naxos label. His solo debut with the York Guildhall Orchestra was recorded for BBC Radio 3. He has often been featured on CBC Radio (Canada) and Radio 4 (Hong Kong). As an orchestral musician, he has worked with the world's most renowned conductors including Bernard Haitink, Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev and Mstislav Rostropovich. He has performed extensively with the major chamber and symphony orchestras in London and has appeared as guest concertmaster with orchestras such as the Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Concert and Ulster Orchestras. In 2003, he was appointed as the youngest member of the London Symphony Orchestra where he held the first violin sub-principal position, and also collaborated with film composers John Williams and Alexander Desplat. He regularly takes part chamber series such as the Mainly Mozart Festival, LSO and VSO chamber players and Vancouver's Music on Main. He has performed in venues such as LSO St Luke's and has collaborated with many renowned artists including Martin Roscoe and Simon Wright. Prior to his appointment as concertmaster of the VSO, he was first violinist of the critically acclaimed Vancouver-based Koerner Quartet. Nicholas received his training as a scholar at the Royal College of Music in London, studying with Itzhak Rashkovsky and Rodney Friend. A Royal College prize-winner, he has been generously supported by grants from the Martin Musical Fund, the Craxton Memorial Fund and the Royal Overseas League. This has enabled him to study with many eminent musicians including Ruggiero Ricci and Gil Shaham. Nicholas enjoys teaching and has given many masterclasses internationally. 5 Adjudicators, continued: Israeli pianist Ilana Vered was born into a musical family. Her mother was a concert pianist and her father was a violinist. At age 13 she won an Israeli government grant to continue her studies at the Paris Conservatoire where she studied with Vlado Perlemuter and Jeanne-Marie Darré. At age 15 she graduated from the Paris Conservatoire where she was awarded a first prize in piano. She completed her studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City under the tutorship of Rosina Lhevinne, Nadia Reisenberg, and Aube Tzerko. She made her debut as one of the first winners of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in Soon she began touring in Europe and the United States. She has been heard in recital in virtually all of the music centers of the world, and has been engaged and re-engaged as soloist with the leading orchestras of our time, including the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Japan NHK Symphony Orchestra and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed as soloist under the batons of most of the world's finest conductors including Leopold Stokowski, Georg Solti, Zubin Mehta, Rudolf Kempe, Sergiu Comissiona and Colin Davis. A regular participant in summer festivals, Vered has made appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, Chicago's Ravinia Festival, Tanglewood and Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, to name a few. She has repeatedly demonstrated sovereign musical and technical command over some forty-five concertos, from J.S. Bach through Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, to Berg. The name Ilana Vered is synonymous with vibrant piano virtuosity since the earliest days of this compelling artist s career. "Shattering," "magnificent," "dazzling," "splendid" are words critics have used the world over to describe her on the concert stage. Vered is a chamber musician of distinction and has appeared with important chamber ensembles throughout the world. She is noted particularly for her frequent performances with the Tokyo String Quartet. During the Hampton Summerfest and the Rutgers Summerfest, she performed all five of Beethoven s piano concertos in one event. During the season, she performed Beethoven s cycle of the complete sonatas and variations for piano and cello with cellist Sharon Robinson throughout the major musical centers of the USA. Vered, who has a devoted following in the Far East, appeared in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea and toured the major cities of Japan numerous times with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Ilana Vered is also noted for her distinguished recordings, including the highly-praised version of the complete Chopin's Etudes, Opp. 10 and 25 and a brilliant world premiere complete recording of Moszkowski's 15 Études de Virtuosité, Op. 72 (1970). Other notable recordings include the complete set of Beethoven's five piano concertos with the Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra released in late She has been a frequent guest on television and radio, including appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Merv Griffin Show, and has made guest performances on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Public television stations in the USA and the BBC in the UK. In collaboration with the noted Swiss movie producer Adrian Marthaler, Vered has made a series of unusual feature-length films entitled "Looking at Music," which was telecast by the BBC, and the Arts and Entertainment and Bravo cable networks. These films are being distributed as home videos in the USA By BMG. 6 Adjudicators, continued: Pianist Wayne Weng s playing has been described as bold, vibrant, and immensely musical," and as having delicacy amounting to almost reverence [ ] through gossamer touch" (Wiltshire Gazette & Herald). His ability to modulate the piano s sound [ ] coupled with his great ear easily gave him an edge (Sioux City Journal) to capture the first prize at the 2013 Iowa Piano Competition. He has also won prizes at various competitions such as the Washington International Competition for Piano, Tunbridge Wells International Young Artists Competition, CBC Debut Concert Artists Auditions, and Kingsville International Young Performers Competition. He has been a recipient of the Solti Foundation Grant and the British Columbia Arts Council Senior Scholarship. As a soloist as well as a chamber musician, Mr. Weng has performed in Canada, the United States, England, France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Serbia, Egypt, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Venues include the Kennedy Center, Chicago Cultural Center, The Fitzwilliam Museum at the Cambridge University, the Palace of Fontainebleau, Ruïnekerk in Holland, Cairo Opera House, the Polish and Bulgarian Consulates in New York, Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, and the British Columbia Governor House. He has performed concertos with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, West Coast Symphony, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Seattle,and the Avanti Orchestra. He has also been heard on radio stations such as the WFMT Chicago, WQXR New York, CBC Radio and Seattle King FM. As well as adjudicating, he has participated at such summer festivals as the International Holland Music Sessions, International Keyboard Institute and Festival, TCU/Cliburn Piano Institute, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Habitat4Music, and Ecole d'art Americaines in Fontainebleau, where he was awarded the Piano Prix. Mr. Weng is currently pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the City University of New York s Graduate Center, where he is a fellowship recipient and studies with Ursula Oppens. He has previously studied with Donna Fishwick, Sasha Starcevich, Natalya Antonova, Pavlina Dokovska, Joan Havill and Peter Frankl. He holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Mannes College of Music (Master of Music), Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Master with distinction), and Yale University (Artist Diploma). Mr. Weng is represented by Classics Alive Artists management. Arlene McIntyre is an active voice teacher, clinician, and adjudicator. Arlene has taught singing for many years in her private studio along with teaching in music programs in both college and university, such as Capilano University, the University of Victoria and the Vancouver Music Academy. Many of her students have gone on to careers in performance and teaching. She has been a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) since 1976 and has held many executive positions on the local and district level, including the position of Regional Governor for the Northwestern Region of NATS. After living for many years on Vancouver Island, she is currently living in West Vancouver. Nicholas Rada started to play and improvise on the piano at the age of four. Formal instruction began at age six under the direction of Patricia Hoebig. Coaching continued in the hands of Donna Fishwick as Nicholas became an active and developing performer both as a soloist and a chamber musician. Performance venues have brought him to such cities as Munich, Prague, Ceske Budejovice, Udine, New York, New Haven, Victoria and others. Engaging in numerous local and national competitions, Nicholas has been the recipient of various awards and scholarships. While enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase as a Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Sasha Starcevich, Nicholas was a regional finalist in the Music Teachers National Association competition as well as being awarded 3 rd prize in the national finals of the Canadian Music Competition. Other prizes include 2 nd place at the Women s Musical Club Festival as well as an opportunity of performing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as a winner of the Music Man Concerto Competition. He has completed a Masters of Music degree at the University of British Columbia, studying with Sara David Buechner. 6

7 Adjudicators, continued: Evgenia Rabinovich is a 24-year-old Vancouver-based pianist, teacher, and performer. She is a winner of numerous regional and provincial competitions, a laureate of the 2010 Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival, and a first place winner of the 2010 National Canadian Music Competition. Her performance career includes appearances across North America, Europe, and China. She has played with many international orchestras since her debut with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra under conductor Ken Hsieh in 2009, performing Tchaikovsky s Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. Her most recent international appearance was in Italy in 2015, where she performed Beethoven s Concerto No. 1 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Alicante under Maestro Uri Segal. Evgenia s musical training includes long-term work with revered musicians such as Sasha Starcevich, Pavlina Dokovksa, and Sarah Davis Buechner. At 18, Evgenia was accepted into the bachelor s program at the Mannes School of Music in New York where she studied with Pavlina Dokovska. She received her bachelor s degree at Mannes in 2015, graduating with Academic Honours and subsequently completed her master s degree at the UBC School of Music under the tutelage of Sara Davis Buechner and Miranda Wong. Her chamber training includes work with Rena Sharon as well as the late musician and critic Harris Goldsmith. Other esteemed artists with whom she has worked include Ilana Vered, Richard Goode, Jerome Lowenthal, Gary Graffman, Ursula Oppens, Berry Snyder, and Alexander Korsantia. Evgenia is currently employed as a graduate teaching instructor at the UBC School of Music where she is managing undergraduate secondary piano classes. She is also a private piano and theory teacher to students of all levels. When not teaching, she is busy conducting masterclasses and pre-performance coachings. Evgenia is due to begin her Doctoral of Musical Arts in piano performance this fall. Yuko Noble owes much of her musical passion to her father, John Tokunoh, a choral singer and self-taught musician, and mother Sachiko Tokunoh, a trained-opera singer and her first piano teacher. Her other influential instructors include Doreen Skorah, Donna Fishwick, Terence Dawson and Robert Rogers. She has earned an Associateship in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music as well as an Arts degree and Music degree from the University of British Columbia, where she received several scholarships. She was a key member of the UBC Balinese Gamelan for several years and a musical acting coach for the TV series Dark Angel. As an ensemble artist, Yuko has performed in venues across North America and Europe. Since 1986, she has been upholding a busy private music studio; her students have earned top regional and national prizes. An educator at heart, she delights in conducting musical workshops as well as music history classes. For the past sixteen years, she has served as piano adjudicator for several festivals throughout Western Canada and the Yukon. Yuko resides in Burnaby with her loving husband and daughter.
