See page 6 for details Congratulations! And a full measure of rum to Cap n John George for his magnificent work on Philo s HMS Pinafore float entry in this year s Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Parade. Not only did John create a masterful float but he was the centre of attention during the parade with all the children lining the route calling for the attention of the Captain. Aboard HMS Pinafore for the journey along Herries, into Ruthven, turning into Chalk Drive at finally to berth in Queens Park were the ladies of the day, cousins Del Merrick and Tash Graham, tars Dan Craig and Paul Weir and finally, ably steering a steady course, Cap n John, all resplendent in costume. Prior to embarkation, the onerous task of keeping the pansies wet was carried out with consummate skill by none other than Pam Duane, whilst overseeing the whole was imperious Cousin Hebe, Ruth Graham. As the day s temperature rose, departure hour seemed to approach slower and slower but fortunately Cap n, crew and passengers were entertained by the music and dancing close by of a group representing the Thai community. As we departed our moorings finally in Phillip Street right on 12 bells, drawn by a SUGDEN crane, (Thank You Richard and Gloria) the waving, cheering and obvious camaraderie from personnel on the other participating floats promised a great parade... And we were not disappointed! Cap n John HMS Pinafore sets sail in the Carnival of Flowers - Page 3 St. Luke s Carnival Sunday concert - Pages 4 & 5
2 Page 2 From The President s Pen Welcome to our new-look Focus on Philo and thanks to editor Paul Weir for putting it all together and taking the photos. We hope to bring you the Focus on a regular basis, so please look out for it... and enjoy! Firstly, I must thank all of you who took part in the St. Luke s Carnival Concert during the Carnival of Flowers. It went extremely well, and many people came and spoke of how much they enjoyed it and how they appreciated the different repertoire we sang. Our special thanks should go to Matthew, Pam and Andrew for all the work they put into it. It is our good fortune they are associated with Philo and lead us so well! Rehearsals for H.M.S. Pinafore are progressing well. We would now like all the offstage choir to attend rehearsals every Wednesday and Sunday night to keep up with rehearsal progress. Your added vocal help is now needed. Remember also! Tickets are now on sale at Elders Real Estate office, 202 Hume Street. To have a great audience to play to, we all need to let EVERYONE know. Also, don t forget!. We need help with set building and painting and hat working bees. If everyone can attend each time a working bee is called, the work gets done, a good time is had by all, and... you even get fed! Bonus! Ruth October 2012 Well Done! John John George seen here hard at work bringing life to Philo s entry in this year s Carnival of Flowers. Although a comparatively thankless task, John says that he enjoys seeing the float coming back to life and with his eye for detail and this year s theme, HMS Pinafore could almost put to sea. A silent worker, John would probably like a few more helpers next year to spread the load. Many Thanks to the ladies who helped with the painting this year. One! Two! Three! WAKE UP! John! Ahoy! All Hands on Deck! With the passing of Winter and the arrival of the colour and sunshine of Spring, the main task at hand at the Philos Complex is to Spring Clean... In other words, prepare the buildings, both inside and out, for the onslaught of Summer. Accordingly, the call is out for all volunteers... All Hands on Deck!. A list of tasks has been generated covering building and grounds maintenance and we are now looking for individuals or teams to take ownership of a particular task to see it through to completion in order to keep our complex ship shape. As this is YOUR complex, it is in all our interests to keep things clean, tidy and up to scratch and your contribution, no matter how small, will assist in maintaining the Philo s complex area in good order. Watch out for a SPRING CLEAN Date Claimer. SEE PAGE FOR 7 FOR SPRING CLEANING TASKS

4 Page 4 October 2012 St. Luke s Carnival Sunday Concert Once again the Philharmonic Society choir thrilled a Toowoomba audience with their vocal skills, this time at the Carnival Sunday concert held at St. Luke s church, under the direction of the very talented Matthew Collins. Over 100 visitors gathered in St. Luke s, decorated for it s Flower and Music festival to hear a range of uplifting songs and hymns. The society was also honoured to be supported by guest soloists Melinda Janetzki and Phillip Prendergast. Supported on both piano and organ by Philo s masterful musicians Pam Duane and Andrew Doecke, the choir surpassed it s own expectations to produce a concert worthy of the surroundings. Similarly the gentle harmonies of the Treble Tones in their rendition of The Lord is My Shepherd brought much comment from the crowd. From the warmly inspirational playing by Pam to the emotionally charged organ accompaniment by Andrew, the audience were treated to true musical excellence. The expression on conductor Matthew s face was sufficient also to alert all in the choir to the fact that we had done well, The singularly wonderful contribution of Melinda s solo was followed up by her joining with the choir to add a fully professional tone to our remaining performances. The uplifting finale of Phillip Prendergast s soaring interpretation of Remember from the film Troy, sensitively backed by the choir, brought to a close a memorable event for choir members, guest soloists, accompanists and audience members alike. 7 October 2012 Page 79 HMS Pinafore in rehearsal Rehearsals for HMS Pinafore continue, with each week bringing its own challenges not the least being, as seen above, a rebellious Musical Director. As blocking continues, and the whole begins to take shape, the importance of lines learned and books down becomes the main goal. Andrew reports he is happy with musical progress and between Director Peter and Assistant director Karl, characterisation and movement are beginning to emerge. With most cast members now measured up for costumes, it just remains to rehearse, rehearse, and... You guessed it!... REHEARSE again! SPRING CLEAN Project Tasks From Page 2, these are the tasks that need consideration in a Spring Clean Project 1. Hedge trimming on western driveway. 2. Monthly detailed cleaning of Concert Hall foyer & mother's room 3. A regular Kitchen blitz (clean fridge, stove, cupboards) 4. Gardening (general weeding, pruning as necessary) 5. Regular mowing and edging. 6. Cleaning out gutters. 7. Pressure clean concrete paths. 8. Venetian blinds (concert hall) need washing. 9. Concert hall chairs need inspecting (cracked welds & dirt) and some need steam cleaning 10. Wipe over outdoor signs with damp cloth. 11. All glass windows and doors - need a regular washing. STAY TUNED! Mini Projects to cover these important tasks will be published in forthcoming editions of Focus On Philo
