3 Fall 2016 Workshop Fall 2016 AKTS Workshop: Saturday, September 24, 2016 at ASU Gammage Andrew Ellingsen Orff Schulwerk & Kodály: Stronger Together Music teachers often feel they need to choose between the Koda ly and Orff Schulwerk philosophies of music education, but both approaches center on helping children discover music and creativity in a natural way. Why choose when you can do both? Come sing, say, dance, and play see how incorporating techniques from both Orff Schulwerk and Koda ly inspired teaching can strengthen the teaching already happening in your classroom. Participants will learn a variety of repertoire ranging from folk music to source material from the Orff Schulwerk volumes and will explore how the two pedagogies can intertwine to support students in their music making and musical learning. Andrew Ellingsen teaches elementary music and works as an instructional coach in Decorah, IA. He earned his B.A. at Luther College and his M.A.M.E. at the University of St. Thomas with a dual concentration in Kodály and Orff Schulwerk. He has served on the OAKE national board, a committee for AOSA, and has held leadership positions in state and regional organizations for both Orff Schulwerk and Kodály. Ellingsen teaches in the Orff Courses in at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the University of Memphis, and has presented at both OAKE and AOSA national conferences. Are you an active AKTS Member? When you join OAKE, The Organization of American Koda ly Educators, please list AKTS as your af-iliate chapter. Our Chapter and Division receive a bonus from OAKE to help bring amazing clinicians to Arizona! You may contact OAKE at (310) or by at info@oake.org. Thanks! 4 Kodály in Your Classroom by Dr. Shelly Cooper Kodály in Your Classroom by Dr. Shelly Cooper, University of Arizona Salamanca Market Salamanca Market is a street market in Hobart, Tasmania in Australia. It is a major tourist attraction as there are more than 300 vendors who sell everything from fresh produce to arts and crafts to -ine gifts. In the courtyard of the Salamanca Arts Centre you ll also enjoy music and dancing. Salamanca Market is a catchy melody that interests students of all ages and serves as a great tool for preparing or practicing sets of 4-sixteenth notes. Process: Review Song while distributing envelopes with eight strips of 4-beat icon patterns Sing song and have students tap the steady beat Sing song and have students tap the rhythm of the text Have students determine which 4-beat icon patterns match the song and place them in order on the beat page. (Note: There purposely more strips than the song length and some patterns included that are not in the song.) Extension 1: Have students transfer the icons to traditional notation Read the rhythms using rhythm duration syllables (ta, ti-ti, etc.) PAGE 4 AKTS NEWSLETTER

9 Fall Workshop 2015: Denise Gagne Kevin Powell On September 19, 2015, Denise Gagne presented a workshop entitled The Dollarama Diva Manipulatives in the Music Room. She began the session with us exploring the difference between beat and rhythm using the song Engine #9. She shared with us a number of affordable and handy manipulatives from the Dollar Store. One versatile example involved utilizing Cookie Sheets and magnets to show melodic and rhythmic dictation, as well as Treble clef note recognition. Another favorite involved making Bug Bags with a variety of rubber bugs to create Bug compositions, an ostinato, or a B section in conjunction with folk songs such as Snail, Snail, Johnny Caught a Flea and Bats. Other engaging highlights included a moving Paper Plate routine to Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake, a Tennis ball routine to Mendelssohn s Wedding March and connecting Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes with Grieg s In the Hall of the Mountain King. She shared her expertise regarding using Learning Centers and how they encourage children to make choices, work independently and cooperatively, while allowing the teacher to address children s individual learning styles. We had fun practicing note recognition and values by playing Note Name Battleship, Rhythm Dice Games, and Treble Trouble. Lastly, Mrs. Gagne shared a few strategies for incorporating Favorite Storybooks in the music classroom. We explored dynamics, high/low, fast/slow with Robert Munsch s books, Mortimer, Up Up Down, and Love You Forever. AKTS appreciated the knowledge and expertise provided by Denise Gagne and we thank her for visiting Phoenix and presenting for our chapter! VOLUME XXXVIII ISSUE 1 PAGE 9
