10 Stormy Weather Music excerpts from Ein Alpensinfonie by Richard Strauss Lesson by Kimberly Nolen Concepts: beamed sixteenth notes, creative Movement, rhythmic composition/ arrangement Materials: Recording of Ein Alpensinfonie ( Gewitter und sturm section approx ), visuals with iconic representation of rhythms, (optional: pictures, slideshows, videos etc.) 1. Warm Up (stretches, vocalizations, etc.) to Ein Alpensinfonie. 2. Discuss in partners/small groups then share as a class the musical elements of the piece that create a stormy, musical atmosphere, (Instrumentation, timbre, tempo). 3. Create body percussion rainstorm by introducing rhythm first through text then by adding original or unique body percussion. Introduce weather text/iconic Notation to complement the rhythm or have students make up their own!
