2 The Department of Music is one of the most active departments on campus. With brand new facilities, and through our vast program of classes, private study, and performance, you can explore and experience music in ways you can only begin to imagine. Students are afforded opportunities to study music education, musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, composition, and performance with a talented and dedicated faculty. The Washington College Department of Music embraces music from around the globe, from many different backgrounds, traditions, and cultures. We invite you to join us and take a course, take some lessons, become a major or minor, or just experience a concert! The Department of Music recognizes and celebrates the diversity of musical experiences from performance and education to music business and production. Music majors at Washington College work toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Major Requirements The music major at Washington College requires 54 credits (13.5 courses), plus a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE). Music Theory 16 credits MUS 131, 132, 231, 232. 3 Our BA degree program is flexible and divided into specific advisory tracks: Performance (vocal and instrumental) This track is designed for students who aspire to careers in performance, whether as a classical soloist, in musical theatre and opera, or as a member of an instrumental or vocal performance ensemble. Students on this track learn the skills, concepts, and methodology necessary to achieve a professional level of proficiency on his/her principal instrument or voice. This is achieved through private lessons, which include proficiency-based final exams, instrumental or vocal labs, and performance studies classes. During their senior year, students on this track perform a senior recital that typifies current professional performance standards. Music Education (K-12) Students in the Instrumental or Choral Music Education program receive a solid grounding in educational and pedagogical skills, primary and secondary instruments, and music theory and history, preparing them for vocation in teaching and/or further graduate studies in the area of music education. Students interested in completing certification requirements for music education work towards a minor in secondary education through the Department of Education, which allows students to complete coursework in education as required by the State of Maryland. Theory and Composition This track allows students to concentrate on the creative aspects of theory and composition to prepare them for graduate school in theory or composition, or work as a professional composer. Students are required to continue to study an instrument or voice while they take composition private study. Composition students benefit from use of the music technology studio. Music History and Criticism This track focuses on the study of the historical construction of music as a social and intellectual phenomenon and the analysis and criticism of musical literature. This pathway prepares students for graduate programs in musicology or ethnomusicology. World Music World Music is the term used to describe all of the musical traditions found throughout the world today, including music of the past, traditional music, ritual and ceremonial music, as well as newer popular forms. This track focuses on the study of music in its cultural context using the methodologies of ethnomusicology, an interdisciplinary field that merges musicology with the methods of cultural anthropology. Students in this track leave with a minor in anthropology and are encouraged to pursue a double major. Music Technology and Production Students exploring this track will be introduced to a variety of technologies and techniques associated with music recording, postproduction, MIDI composition, and live electro-acoustic performance. Tied closely to our Liberal Arts mission, students in this track will to work collaboratively with peers in music, visual arts, theater, and dance, to design/create/compose imaginative multi-media works. All students have access to industry standard DAW (digital audio workstation) software, including Ableton Live, Avid Protools, and Logic Pro, as well as a diverse array of microphones, controllers, audio interfaces, mixers, and tablet-based software. Students interested in careers in Music Production will be encouraged to consider a double major in Music and Media Studies. Traditional (Liberal Arts) This track is modeled after the traditional Bachelor of Arts curriculum at liberal arts colleges. It is designed to provide a broad-based knowledge of all aspects of music history, theory, performance, and pedagogy for students seeking a general understanding of music to compliment a career in any profession. Students in this track often combine the music major with a variety of other minors and programs. Common pathways have included coupling the music major with a minor in business, drama, or art, or with pre-professional programs such as premedical studies and pre-law. Music majors are very successful at pursuing careers in these professions.

4 The Music Department offers two minor options Music Minor For the music minor, students are required to take a year of music theory (MUS 131/132), and 20 additional credits selected in music, including history, ethnomusicology, theory, applied music, and ensembles. In addition, minors must attend and participate in department- designated performances and events. Ethnomusicology Minor Using music as an entry into a variety of cultures, social classes, and populations, the ethnomusicology minor offers a unique opportunity for students interested in both music and anthropology. Ethnomusicologists take a global, interdisciplinary approach to the study of music and seek to understand music as a social practice, viewing music as a human activity that is shaped by its cultural context. The minor in ethnomusicology is 23 credits and is open to students in all subject areas, including music. 6 Music, Dance, Food, and Culture The Cuban Experience offers Washington College students the unparalleled opportunity to learn first-hand about Cuba through an academic lens. In collaboration with professors Schweitzer (music) and Lampman (anthropology), students design and conduct authentic field research into the intersection of music, religion, dance, food, and culture in Havana, the oldest city in the New World. Take a stroll through Havana s Old Town, and you ll likely hear four or five live bands from any given street corner. Walk the streets at dawn and listen to the intimate songs of vendors and old folks. Students attend a variety of concerts and public rituals daily throughout the city, including salsa, timba, jazz, rumba, son, and Afrocuban traditional/religious music. During this four credit course in either MUS or ANT, students will also visit Trinidad (founded in 1514), one of the best preserved cities in all the Caribbean. Named a Unesco World Heritage Site, Trinidad s cobblestone streets are teeming with music, colorful art, cafes, and nightlife. North Indian Folklife, Musical, and Cultural Heritage Short-term study abroad course to Delhi, Agra, and Varanasi, India This course is interdisciplinary, with a heavy focus on various forms of folklife and cultural heritage of North India which includes learning about the history of Hindu and Buddhist temples and Islamic mosques and reflecting on the architecture, history, and cultural contexts for the creation of these temples including the Taj Mahal in Agra and locations in Varanasi, Sarnath, and Dehli. Students take private lessons from masters of the tabla, sitar, bansuri flute, and/or Indian vocal styles and will interview and work with noted internationally renowned sculptors and painters. Students also participate in the religious practice of Yoga, conducting ethnographic analysis of funeral ceremonies at various ghats on the Ganges River and participate as witnesses to an Aarti ceremony.
