3 About WaterBear WaterBear is a brand new college offering degree and masters qualifications for musicians, creative artists and entrepreneurs, at whatever stage they may be in their careers. 4 About You WaterBear courses have been designed for people who are active in the creative industries. Our BA (Hons) and MA programmes are for: Musicians Producers Songwriters DJs Solo artists Tour and event managers Creative sector entrepreneurs WaterBear only take on people we feel we can help. For that reason, we will want to hear all about you, your plans and achievements to date. Should you wish to study with us, we will explore this with you personally at interview. Our role is to help you effectively join the dots and establish a realistic and achievable career strategy. We firmly believe that a career in the creative sector should not be viewed as a risk. 5 Our Courses WaterBear offers BA (Hons) degree and Master of Arts (MA) qualifications. We deliver these qualifications in partnership with the University of Chichester and the Platform One College of Music, Isle of Wight. BA (Hons) Commercial Music (3 Years) The BA (Hons) is a 3-year programme. It is a wide-ranging qualification that provides the foundations for a long-term career in music. It is designed for: Producers Vocalists Guitarists Drummers Bassists Songwriters Tour Managers DJs Event Managers Event Technicians All participants will cover essential subject areas including recording, mixing, mastering, social media, business studies, employment, music history, music performance, instrumental or vocal technique, songwriting and arranging, tour management, live events and national touring. BA (Hons) students will form part of a thriving creative community, developing individual career plans, band, solo, production or live projects. One-to-one mentoring and guidance underpin progression through the course. Students will bring their own unique elements to the course, resulting in a huge variety of project work. Indicative Modules The course has a diverse range of modules that contribute to a rounded skillset linked directly to employment opportunities. 6 MA Music Industry Innovation and Enterprise (1-Year) The MA is a one-year programme tailored for people having either recently graduated from a BA (Hons) qualification, or experienced music industry professionals, with or without a first degree. Participants can use their past and present industry activity as a foundation for the programme of study. Key areas of investigation include innovation in music and business, bringing projects to life via fund raising and creative business planning, social media and digital marketing, and developing your personal skills, knowledge, contacts and career strategy. Students will also create a significant body of new work throughout the programme, become part of a thriving community of like-minded professionals, build an address book of contacts and negotiate a career development plan. The MA is designed to be highly time efficient to sit alongside your existing workload, which will be central to the programme of study. One-to-one mentoring is provided throughout the programme to ensure your workload is managed and can be accommodated alongside your existing commitments. They are an integral part of teaching and learning at WaterBear, whether delivering lectures, seminars and 1-1 tutorials onsite, online, or both. By bus: There are twenty-one bus services that stop directly outside of WaterBear HQ, on Queens Road. Bus services are 1, 1A, 6, 7, 14, 14A, 14C, 21, 27, 27C, 46, 47, 52, 57, 59, 77, 769, Coaster 12, Coaster 12A, N1 and N7. By train: WaterBear HQ is less than a five-minute walk from Brighton main line train station. 9 Brighton Life Entry Requirements Brighton is undoubtedly one of the best cities in England for students and creative professionals alike. It s a city by the sea and the WaterBear campus is situated at the very heart of it. Famous for its open and inclusive culture, Brighton is known for its arts scene, nightlife, food and drink, shopping and festivals. Cosmopolitan and lively, it s a location where you can throw yourself in to its diverse and expressive scenes. Brighton Beach Brighton s seafront is the perfect location to soak up the sun in the summer, walk along the prom or check out the amazing cafes and bars with a sea view. The North Lain Brighton s renowned North Laine area is right on WaterBear s doorstep. It s small streets and alleyways are packed full of quirky boutiques, vintage shops, tempting cafes, bars and restaurants. North Laine has one of the largest selections of independent shops and is always chock-full of activity. It s also the perfect place to grab a great coffee and watch the world go by. Nightlife Brighton has vibrant nightlife culture, with large number of clubs and music venues offering something for everyone. You ll find amazing pubs, restaurants, independent cinemas and an amazing live music scene. Music Music forms part of the essence of Brighton. You ll always be able to find something to listen to or get involved with. The city is home to diverse range bands and artists, and you ll find gigs on every night of the week with something to suit everyone s taste. The city is also home to The Great Escape Festival, one of the largest festivals for new music in the world, where more than 450 new and emerging artists from all over the world are showcased each year. It is hosted in venues across the city. Culture Brighton hosts a large number of arts, music, culinary and cultural events and festivals each year. The Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe are two of the biggest events, featuring theatre, music, art and visual media. All year round there are theatre productions, art exhibitions, gigs and events at many of the venues, theatres, pubs, museums and galleries in the city. The UKs biggest LGBTQ+ event, Brighton Pride, is one of the cities major showpiece events. Note these are guidelines only. For over 12 years he wrote a monthly teaching column in RHYTHM magazine and as a drum tutor, has guided the development of many hundreds of students, both privately and at various renowned music institutions. He has over 15 years experience in music education, most recently having held successive positions as Principal of two of the UK s largest private music education colleges. He is degree qualified, holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning and in 2018, is due to complete an MA in Music Industry Innovation. Mark Clayden Principal As founding member of UK group Pitchshifter, Mark has released 11 albums with both major and independent record labels. He s also toured 27 countries at stadium level with artists such as Iggy Pop, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, Incubus, Metallica, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Pantera and Ozzy Osbourne. As a record label owner and manager, Mark has overseen all aspects of label and project management, including marketing, press, PR and touring logistics. He s mentored bands and artists for decades and continues this through his work with the Ramblin Man Fair festival and Underground Music Conferences. Mark has worked in music education for over 15 years, setting up centres across Europe as a College Principal and working alongside numerous universities.
