At our house, a Gizmo is a ten-year old Jack Russell Terrier, who we adopted last spring. The tempo should e no aster than q = 120, played in a strict mechanical ashion (à la Gizmo/Unknown Gadget ). Unless otherwise marked, all notes should e played with a small amount o separation or correct stylistic interpretation. The ratchet may e perormed as loudly as possile. Perhaps it could e a eatured celerity soloist, such as an administrator, civic leader, or other non-musical guest perormer. Tromones should exaggerate the glissandi that egin in measure 17. The timpanist, i availale, should, at measure 47, lightly tap the shells o the instrument with the grip ends o the mallets (turn them around). Don t scratch or dent the timpani and go or a deep, low, metallic, hollow sound. I you have extra percussionists or lack timpani, you may sustitute or doule the timpani shell tapping with a large woodlock, and the part is cued on the Percussion 1 part. The director may decide on whether to clap, stomp, or do oth at measure 49. In addition to providing concepts or teaching and reinorcement that are concurrent with your and method, it is my hope that you, your students, and your audience enjoy Gizmo.
