1 SoilCares ner Manual! Tips Read this manual carefully. The SoilCares ner is a Near Infra Red (NIR) measuring device. The sensor head requires to remain clean to ensure its proper operation. Use the brush and dry cleaning wipes to keep the bottom of the ner clean. See section 25 for more detailed instructions. The ner must be fully charged before first use. Find the 'SoilCares Soil ner App in Google Play and install the application on your Android smartphone. For Android 2. O

3 Getting started 4. Registration A. Enter username, , password and select usage and user role. Click Next Step. Selecting Personal Use will generate invoices under your name. Selecting Company Use will generate invoices under your company name (VAT number is required). The SoilCares ner App has a multiple client registration functionality that is activated when the Advisor role is selected. If the Individual role is selected, the registered user will be the only client on the phone. B. Enter name, surname, birth date and a phone number and select your country and city. Click Register. 4 Getting started 5. Login Calibrate and the Reset white password side A. Log in by clicking on the Login tab. Use the username and password set during the registration process. The App will remember your login credentials if you tick Keep me logged in. B. If you have already registered but can not recall your password or username, click on FORGOT PASSWORD on the Login page. The application will ask you for your registered address where you will receive a reset link. 5 IR Start-up and connection 6. Starting-up, connecting and turning off the ner A. Charge the battery by connecting the USB cable (7) to the power socket (8) and the charging port (2). B. Turning the ner ON. Press the SCAN button (1A) for 3 seconds. The ner will initiate its start-up sequence indicated by the blinking green battery icon. The ner is ready to be connected via Bluetooth when the battery icon (1C) turns continuously green and the Bluetooth indicator (1B) starts blinking. C. An orange battery icon indicates a low battery (< 25%). The icon turns red when the battery is below (< 10%). Fully charging the battery takes approximately 6 hours. Finding the device name of your ner The device name of your ner is on the back side of the handle. The device name should follow this scheme: SC_xxxC. 6 Start-up and connection 8. Connecting your SoilCares ner to the App using Bluetooth (1) B. After having successfully logged in, the application will take you to the screen. Click on the menu tab located at the bottom right side of the application screen. A. 7 Start-up and connection 8. Connecting your SoilCares ner to the App using Bluetooth (2) D. Click on the 'Search for Device' button and select your ner from the 'AVAILABLE DEVICES' list. The appropriate name for your ner should be 'SC_***C'. If you had previously connected your app to this device, you will find your ner in the 'PAIRED DEVICES' list. BACK E. The application will take you back to the '' screen. To establish a connection between the ner and the App press the 'SCAN' button on the screen. The Bluetooth icon (1B) will turn continuously blue indicating that the SoilCares ner is succesfully connected to your smartphone. Attention! The ner requires to be connected to the smartphone only during the scanning procedure. When you are checking reports, adding orders farmers or fields... the Bluetooth icon (1B) will be blinking until you start scanning again. 9 Calibrating your ner 9. White Calibrate 'ground the white side - Before each order (1) Before each order, a White 'ground ' of the ner needs to be done with the Calibration Cap (7). A. The orange circle of the application will always display the expected scan. Start your day (and each order) by proceeding to a White 'ground following the instructions in the orange box. B. 10 Calibrating your ner 9. White Calibrate 'ground the white side - Before each order (2) C. Make sure the pins of the ner connect perfectly with the holes of the Calibration Cap. The ner needs to be in contact with the white surface. To start the White 'ground ', press the SCAN button (1A). Do not move the ner while it is scanning/while!! the scan indicator is blinking. D. When the White 'ground ' has been successfully scanned, your smartphone will vibrate and the 'ground ' circle will turn green. Check 'ning Validations' (section 23) for possible invalid ground notifications. SC_134C %70 Put the ner on the YELLOW side of the Calibration Cap with pins fitting in the holes. Yellow Calibrate 'Standard the white side - Once a day (1) At the beginning of each working day (or when you connect your App to a different ner), a Yellow 'Standard Sample' needs to be calibrated with the calibration cap (7). A. The orange circle shows the next expected scan - the Yellow 'Standard '. Please follow the instructions given in the orange box below the video. B. When the SCAN led indictor is ontinuously green, press the SCAN button. Do NOT move the ner while the SCAN led indicator is blinking. ground Standard 11

12 Calibrating your ner 10. Yellow Calibrate 'Standard the white side - Once a day (2) C. Make sure the pins of the ner connect perfectly with the holes of the Calibration Cap. The ner needs to be in contact with the yellow surface. To start the 'Standard ', press the SCAN button (1A). Do not move the ner while it is scanning/while the scan indicator is blinking. D. When the Yellow 'Standard Sample' has been successfully scanned, your smartphone will vibrate and the 'Standard Sample' circle will turn green. Check 'ning Validations' (section 24) for possible invalid ground notifications. You will then automatically be sent to the Soil ning screen. 13 ning soil 11. Definitions and recommendations The SoilCares ner is a measuring device that requires good care to ensure its proper operation. Make sure to keep the bottom and glass part of the ner clean using the brush and dry cleaning wipes in between each scan (See section 25 for more information). Collecting a soil sample A soil sample must be prepared before you can start scanning. Follow these easy steps or the "How do I collect a good soil sample?" booklet. 1. Using an auger, collect multiple 25cm deep soil samples from your field following a zigzag pattern 2. Mix all samples thoroughly in a bucket. Soil Testing Series: Part 2 How do I collect a good soil sample? To get accurate advice from your soil test, you need to hand in a bag of soil that represents the whole area you want tested. How do I get that? I can t just take any soil I find on my farm, can I? 13.

14 ning soil 13. ning a soil sample (1) Make sure the ner and the application are correctly connected as described in section 'Start-up and connection' and that you have followed the instructions explained in section Calibrating Your ner page 9. B. Put the scanner on top of the soil in the Sample Cup (10). Make sure the scanning surface of the device is in contact with the soil. SC_134C %70 Put the ner on top of the soil in the Sample Cup. Do NOT move the ner while the led indicator is blinking. SCAN C. Press the SCAN button (1A) when the light is continuously green. IR Do not move the ner while it is scanning / while the green indicator is blinking D. The smartphone will vibrate when the scan is completed and its corresponding circle will turn green. The next expected scan circle will turn orange. For each order, 5 valid scans are required. Put the soil contained in the sample cup back into the bucket. Mix it thoroughly, fill a new sample cup and repeat the procedure until all required scans are colored green. Check 'ning Validations' (section 22) for other possible invalid Soil ning notifications. 15

16 Order Registration 14. Registering an order (1) A. You need to first select an existing client or create a new one by tapping on the Add New Client button to place an order. You have the possibility to change your selection using the change button. Your existing clients will be listed in the App according to your current location: the nearest client at the top, the furthest at the bottom. B. Then, select an existing field or create a new one by tapping on the Add New Field button. You have the possibility to change your selection using the Change button. If the selected client already has existing fields, they will be listed. icator is blinking. At least one crop must be selected to complete the order. D. Select a crop from the list. The application will automatically fill the Variety and Class information. Enter the target yield and select the yield unit from the list. It is possible to leave the target yield empty. In this case, it will be calculated automatically. If you wish to remove a crop from your selection, swipe it from the right to the left. 19 Order Registration 14. Registering an order (4) G. You may add up to three (3) crops to your order. Then, click on Complete Order to finalize the process. The application will direct you to the Screen. 20 Order Registration 15. Reading your reports (1) A. To see all your reports, click on the menu icon. The reports are grouped by their registration dates. If a report is not generated yet, it will be displayed with a buffering icon ( ).If a report is not paid, it will be displayed with a trolley icon ( ). The reports with no icon are ready, click on them to see it in detail. B. The first part of the report is the Fertilization and Management advice. Depending on the number of crops selected for the field, there can be up to three different recommendations. 21 Order Registration 15. Reading your reports (2) C. Scroll down to access the Soil Status. The soil parameters are displayed in the Soil Status table with the measured values and units. The Soil Status shows the general level of the parameters: green is adequate, red is low and orange is high. D. Scroll down to see the crops that the soil in its current state is capable of growing in "Suitable Crop Types". You can share or print your reports by clicking on the Share button. Attention! Dry soil samples may not give an EC reading. Growing vegetables will be more difficult. Disclaimer The Analysis Report exclusively relates to the sample presented and examined by the Soilcares ner. SoilCares can not warrant that the Analysis Report relates to the source of the sample if the sample was not correctly collected. Please note that the recommendations given in the Analysis Report provide indicative rates, that are only valid for the sample presented and based on parameters included in the analysis request, such as crop type, field size, yield target and estimated fertiliser recovery. The sporadic character of samples and the date of the Analysis Report are fundamental in the interpretation of the Analysis Report. Whilst we have taken all reasonable care to ensure that our recommendations are accurate, we have not taken into account other factors that could greatly reduce crop nutrient uptake, including but not limited to, soil moisture, root diseases, nematodes, water logging, compaction, acidity, fertilizer placement. etc. Therefore we accept no liability for any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from the use of the recomended fertilisers and under no circumstances whatsoever shall be liable for any special, incidental or consequential damages which may arise therefrom. 22 Client Information 16. Viewing & editing client information (1) A. Taping ( ) on the Navigation tab will display all the registered clients in alphabetical order. Tap on the client to see his detailed information. To add a new client tap on the New Client button located on the right side of the header. B. The information displayed first is the list of fields of the client. By clicking on a field you obtain three options: Field : register an order and start scanning soil from this field. View Report : view all previous reports from this field. 25 Client Information 17. Adding & editing a field A. On the New Field screen, fill out name, size and unit of the sampled area. If you are currently at the sampled area press Use Current Location. If not, determine the location of the field on the map by applying a 2 seconds press. B. The previously entered data will be displayed on the Edit Field screen. Edit any information and press Done to save. To discard any entered information or to return to the previous screen, press. 26 Settings 18. Payment A. Each order costs 1 credit (250 Kes). To add credits to your account, click on the menu item of the navigation tab and navigate to Buy Credits. B. Fill in the number of credits you would like to purchase and the M-Pesa account phone number. The minimum number of credits that can be purchased is 3. After pressing Pay you will receive a message from M-Pesa explaining the payment process. Your account will be topped up with the bought credits automatically once the payment is successful. 27 Settings 19. General settings A. To change the settings of your application, click on the menu item of the navigation tab and then on General Settings. B. The default settings will be displayed. 29 ning Validations 21. Invalid Soil ning messages A. Ensure i) (WHITE) ground sample and scanning interface are clean and ii) Soilcares ner touches soil while scanning. Please rescan (WHITE) ground sample first and then rescan the soil sample. B. Ensure the soil sample touches scanning interface firmly. Please rescan (WHITE) ground sample first and then rescan the soil sample. C. ned material is not detected as soil. Please rescan the (WHITE) ground sample and then the soil sample. D. Soil scan is expected but (WHITE) ground sample is scanned. Follow the instructions of the application (orange box). E. Soil scan is expected but (YELLOW) Standard sample is scanned. Follow the instructions of the application (orange box) F. Either the (WHITE) ground sample is wet (in this case dry (WHITE) ground sample and rescan) or an extremely light soil sample was scanned (in this case please scan (WHITE) ground sample first and then wetten soil sample with water and rescan.) G. Ensure the soil sample touches scanning interface firmly. Please rescan (WHITE) ground sample first and then rescan the soil sample. H. ned material is not detected as soil. Please rescan the (WHITE) ground sample and then the soil sample. 22. Invalid hite (background scan) scanning messages A. (WHITE) ground scan is expected but soil sample is scanned. Follow the instructions of the application (orange box). B. (WHITE) ground scan is expected but Standard (YELLOW) sample is scanned.follow the instructions of the application (orange box). C. Surface of the (WHITE) ground sample is wet. Please ensure the surface of (WHITE) ground sample is dry and rescan. 29.
