2 Project by Andrea Listenberger Black Flag is an original hour-long drama set in 1855 that followsthecourseofoneship,theblackprince,andthestoriesof its crew. In the pilot episode, Thomas Mayfair and friend, Jacob Huntington, join the ship, with the understanding that they will be working as ship hands on a government boat. They quickly discover that they have in fact been employed by a privateering ship still under the jurisdiction of the crown, but with very questionable tactics. Thomas and Jacob meet the crew, including Christopher Nobbins, thequartermaster,andjennifer,thecookontheshipwhowelater learn is also the never-seen Captain s daughter. While the pilot revolves around the arrival of the new crew membersandanencounterwithashipfromanenemynation,the continuing storyline slowly moves into the bizarre and possibly supernatural, as well as an exploration of the characters pasts.

3 Project by Andrea Listenberger The Creative Team Andrea Listenberger Story Writer, Executive Producer, Director Listenberger has absolutely no real-world experience outside of independent or classroom projects, but in the fictional world of her fictional project, is lovingly inserting herself as the showrunner of her dream team. Because a dream team, of course, includes oneself. Jane Espenson Screenplay Writer, Executive Producer Best known for her writing on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Espenson has a diverse portfolio of writing including credits from Gilmore Girls, The Inside, and Jake in Progress. She brings her unique style of intelligent comedy to the project. Michael Giacchino Composer Giacchino brings his remarkable musical talent to this project, providing original, fullyscored episodes. A frequent award-winner and Oscar-nominated, Giacchino is best known for his work on LOST, Alias, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. NBC Universal Production Company, Distributor NBC Universal is one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience. Jerry Bruckheimer Television Production Company Jerry Bruckheimer Television is responsible for hit shows including the three CSI series, The Amazing Race, Cold Case, and Without A Trace. Black Flag combines their innovative serial storytelling style with the experience gained in their sister film division working on movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean.

4 Project by Andrea Listenberger Lead Cast Bradley Cooper Thomas Mayfair Immediately after Bradley Cooper graduated from the Honors English program at GeorgetownUniversityin1997,hemovedtoNewYorkCitytoenrollintheMastersof Fine Arts program at the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University. While still in school, Bradley began his professional career, appearing opposite Sarah Jessica ParkerinSexandtheCityandintheseriesTheBeat.Hebrokeintofeaturefilmswith 2001 swethotamericansummer.heismostrecentlyknownforhisworkonalias. Danny Strong Jacob Huntington Danny Strong was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, a little borough south of Los Angeles. He attended the University of Southern California where he majored in Theater. Upon graduation he immediately started working as an actor. Over the next several years, his acting resume quickly grew with guest appearances on such seminal TV shows as

5 Project by Andrea Listenberger Third Rock from the Sun, Seinfeld, Nip/Tuck and films including Pleasantville, Seabiscuit and the critically acclaimed indie New Suit. He has also had lead roles in several independent films. Danny is best known for the five years he played Jonathan Levenson on the landmark television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. John Ratzenberger Christopher Nobbins John Ratzenberger s face is most prominently etched into America s mind as Cliff Clavin, the mailman on the widely successful sitcom Cheers, but has gone on to achieve successinmanyareas,includingasavoiceartistforpixarfeaturefilms.hereturnsto primetime as Quartermaster Christopher Nobbins, and brings his extensive experience and character acting skills to Black Flag. TheroleofJenniferisyettobecastbutwillbefilledbyatalentedunknown.

6 Project by Andrea Listenberger Project Overview Black Flag has been greenlit by NBC-Universal for a minimum of 11 episodes under the Peacock s new policies instituted by Ben Silverman. The enclosed budget covers the production costs for the pilot episode. Costs for subsequent regular-season episodes will be lower, using existing constructed sets. Above-the-line writers costs will also be lower, in accordance with the lower WGA scale. NBC-Universal anticipates pickinguptheremainderoftheseasonforatotalof22episodes. The pilot will be shot on the NBC-Universal soundstages in Los Angeles, the largestbulkofwhichwillbeontheconstructedsetoftheblackprince.specialeffects for the pilot have been contracted to Spectrum Effects and background CGI and CGI effects will be completed by Stargate Digital. NBC has signed off on a production budget of $7 million, costs to be split between NBC Universal and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, the production company for the series. The series will be shot using Red Digital technology, with full support from the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company. It will be broadcast, compliant with new FCC regulations, in widescreen HDTV. Marketing The summer months of 2009 will slowly see the emergence of Black Flag s extensive marketing campaign. All aspects of the campaign will be coordinated through NBC Universal s marketing department. Aspects of marketing pertaining to the screening of the pilot episode are detailed below. 7 Project by Andrea Listenberger Distribution Black Flag is tentatively slated to air Wednesday nights on NBC during the 10 o clock timeslot.thisprogrammingslotisidealfortheadultcrowdtheshowhopestoattract. While advertising fees are well poised to recoup some of the cost to the network and Bruckheimer (the show appeals to the very attractive young male demographic), long termgoalsaretoachievesyndication,whichwillmorethanrecoupallcostsoftheshow. itunes downloads will be available on the NBC itunes channel for the standard $1.99 per episode. Online streaming video will be available on nbc.com in the weeks following the initial airing. Selected episodes will also be available on hulu.com, NBC s joint project with FOX. International Syndication will be offered through NBC Universal s International Division( DVDSeasonSalescanexpecttobegintwomonthsfollowingtheendofthefirstseason, alsotimedtofitintothemarketingcampaignfortheleaduptothesecondseason.22- episodedvdsetswillsellfor$45each.shouldtheseriesnotbepickedupforasecond season,acompleteseriesdvdsetwillbesoldforthesameprice. Domestic Syndication will be strongly considered if the show is renewed for additional seasons. Although license fees will be dependent on series success, producers expect a minimum of $100,000 per week from stations in top U.S. markets. In addition, first-run repeats may be aired on NBC Universal s cable channel, USA. Final Summary Black Flag will have the opportunity to earn back a portion of its initial investment during its initial run. The high-profile nature of the project will attract high ad sales. To become a viable project, however, popular success will be necessary to propel the project into international and domestic syndication and ensure that it is a popular continuing project for NBC Universal.
