4 Mission Statement Queensland School of Film and Television (QSFT) strives to achieve an international standard of excellence in all aspects of training in film and television production. Through broad-based theoretical study and practical training, QSFT aims to equip students with the skill, knowledge, professional competence and personal confidence needed to gain meaningful employment in the film and television production industry. Location The QSFT is located at 7 / 35 Ethel Street, Yeerongpilly. Our Yeerongpilly premises include a fully operational production facility and is located just seven kilometres south of Brisbane s CBD. A train stop and bus stop are both within a few minutes walk of the school and food outlets can be found nearby. Facilities QSFT classes are conducted in fully-equipped classrooms and studios specially designed for sound and non-linear (digital) video editing. A range of cameras (stills, film and video), multimedia, sound and lighting equipment is used to teach students the practical applications behind the theory. Where appropriate, field trips to professional production facilities are incorporated into the training program. Lecturers All lecturers employed by QSFT have been specially chosen for their real industry experience and exceptional teaching acumen this ensures that students are not only getting the most up to date knowledge, but they are also making valuable networking contacts to assist them in a career in the film and television industry. Course Dates for 2011 Semester 1: Commences- March 7 th - 24 th June Semester 2: Commences- August 1 st 18 th November The QSFT has intakes in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 (mid-year) each year. Full-Time / Part-Time Australian resident students: Full time students undertake a workload of 3 to 4 Areas of Study. Therefore approximately hours per week should be allocated to study (includes lectures, demonstrations, field trips, assignments and home study.) A part-time student undertakes 1 to 3 Areas of Study per Semester. Lectures are normally held from 6pm to 9pm, Monday to Thursday with an Area of Study scheduled for the same evening every week. (If an Area of Study has sufficient numbers, then an afternoon class may be scheduled if required, but is not guaranteed). *Note: For Austudy and Youth Allowance, please check Centrelink requirements. 5 Part-Time Diploma of Screen and Media Students As lectures for an Area of Study occur on the same evening each week, students who wish to study part-time should choose the number of Areas of Study they wish to study, eg. if you enrol in 2 Areas of Study, then you would attend two evenings per week. When enrolling in Areas of Study, part-time students should be mindful of core units and prerequisite units. Guidance on the selection of Areas of Study can be sought from the Head of School. Austudy / Youth Allowance The two-year Diploma course is Austudy/Youth Allowance approved. The course code for the Diploma of Screen and Media is CUF (Contact Centrelink for further details). Acceptance and Admission Procedure Prospective students must complete the Queensland School of Film and Television Application Form and submit the form with the deposit and application fee. An acknowledgement letter will be sent on receipt of this application. Students will be notified by mail regarding the outcome of their application. National Recognition Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): This is available for people who feel that they have demonstrable expertise, undertaken relevant study or experience that is consistent with the maintenance of established academic standards/competencies measured against the Performance Criteria of the Unit(s) in the course. Applications for RPL will only be accepted from people who are either current students or have submitted an application for admission to the QSFT. An application fee plus an RPL assessment fee will apply - for further details, contact QSFT. Credit Transfer: QSFT recognises the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Registered Training Organisation (RTO). QSFT will offer mutual recognition of a result for a common Unit(s) of competence gained from another RTO through Credit Transfer. There is no charge for a Credit Transfer application, however they will only be accepted from people who are either current students or have submitted an application for admission to the QSFT. Articulation QSFT has articulation agreements for its graduates with Bond University (Bachelor of Film and Television), Griffith University (Bachelor of Film and Screen Media) and Central Queensland University (Bachelor of Digital Innovation). Successful completion of units at QSFT can be used to assist in gaining an improved ranking when applying for entry to a course(s) through QTAC. Page 3 of Queensland School of Film and Television

6 Training Costs (2011) FEE: $1145 per Area of Study APPLICATION FEE: Once-only fee of $75 TEXTBOOKS: The required textbooks for Areas of Study you are enrolled in are given to you at no additional cost Fees are payable 4 weeks prior to the start of a semester. Students enrolled in 3 or 4 Areas of Study are eligible for bus and train discounts and to apply for Austudy and/or Youth Allowance. A student undertaking 4 Areas of Study in a semester would pay $4580 for the semester. A student undertaking 2 Areas of Study in a semester would pay $2290 for the semester. Payment methods: Cash, Cheque, Money Order, Direct Deposit/Internet Transfer, Credit Card - Mastercard or Visa (1.5% fee applies to credit card payments). NOTE: Tuition fees do not cover items like film, developing, tapes etc. Indicative costs for specific Areas of Study are outlined in the enrolment form and subsequent unit selection forms. Beyond what is supplied by QSFT students will need to cover general incidental costs relating to their training, e.g. Stationery, external hard drive, props/set dressing requirements etc. Students will also be required to supply their own headphones for editing and sound work. Note: To keep pace with ongoing operating costs, tuition fees will be subject to an increase of approximately 4% each year. PAYMENT PLAN OPTION The QSFT offers a payment plan for each semester s tuition fees (through FFA PaySmart, using direct debit billing) for students who are undertaking 2, 3, 4 Areas of Study in the Diploma of Screen and Media. To apply to pay fees on the payment plan, you will need to come into the QSFT to complete the FFA PaySmart form. The payments can be made using direct debit from a bank account or credit card. If someone else is paying your fees, the form will require the original signature of the person whose bank account or credit card the payments will be debited from. 8 Course Outline Introduction QSFT offers a number of diplomas, certificate courses, workshops and post-graduate programs, all specifically designed to be student-friendly and meet the demands of a competitive industry. These tutorials will apply for topics such as: Camera Usage, Editing, Lighting etc. Field trips will be offered to facilities that are relevant to the Area of Study. Tutorial and field trips usually occur at times outside of normal lecture times. Assessment A variety of assessment techniques are used throughout the course and includes: practical assignments (individual and group), reports, presentations, role plays and written assignments. Assessment Validation is recorded for each Unit of Competence by students signing their Assessment Plan for each Area of Study and progressively receiving copies of assessment feedback sheets for assessment throughout the semester. Students will receive their Statement of Academic Record/Qualification within 21 days of receiving the final satisfactory feedback sheet or satisfactorily undertaking the final exam, that is required for assessment Validation. 10 Unit Synopses Areas of Production Covered The diploma course is designed to give students a working knowledge of the film and television industry so they clearly understand the role each person plays. The Areas of Study of the course cover the following general areas of production: Cinematography Computing for Production Directing Distribution & Marketing Editing Film Post Production Legals Lighting Pitching & Financing Producing Production Design Production Management Production Technology Scriptwriting Sound Video Production Areas of Study Offered (Note: Areas of Study are in alphabetical order) Camera Operation Fundamentals (CAMOPES1) Unit: CUFCAM401A Shoot a wide range of television content Through the use of DV cameras, HD cameras and 16mm cameras, this Area of Study will prepare the student for using video and motion picture equipment. It will cover the theory required for understanding exposures and composition, including: Lighting theory & technique Exposure Filters Composition of the subject Effect of using different lenses Effects of different film stocks Cinematography (CINEMAS3) Unit: CUFCAM601A Direct cinematography for screen productions This Area of Study explores motion picture camera technique. It covers the technical aspects of cinematography and will examine the roles in the Camera Department, particularly that of the Camera Assistant. 11 Slating procedures Loading and unloading film Cleaning the camera Footage readings Focus measurements Moving the camera Packing equipment Preparing exposed film for delivery to the lab. Tools and accessories Film cameras Filters Lenses Film stock Students will undertake practical exercises using a 16mm film camera. Documentary Production (DOCPROS3) Units: BSBPMG510A Manage projects This Area of Study builds on Video Production by taking the student into more complex video production projects. The purpose of this Area of Study is to provide the learner with skills and knowledge to produce documentaries. On completion of this unit, the student will be able to: Prepare a submission for financing a documentary project Write a documentary script Prepare a proposal, treatment, and budget for a documentary Develop a crew for the project Communicate effectively with potential interviewees to obtain their cooperation Direct interviewees for the camera Shoot a documentary using a single camera Fill in the appropriate paperwork Understand the process of researching a topic for a documentary Students will produce documentaries. Additional Costs: DV tape(s) and blank DVDs Editing (EDFIVIS2) Unit: CUFPOS401A Edit screen content for fast turnaround This Area of Study looks at the grammar of editing and the use of an industry standard editing package. Editing has been purposely introduced before any production units, since it is the crux of a production. Often it is not until students edit their material that they realise how much footage they missed acquiring. By understanding the editing process, it will be seen: Why you need to carefully prepare a shot list or script prior to shooting Why you must take those "pick-up" shots Why you can't cross the line of action when shooting Why you need to tape wild sound All these concepts will form a practical basis for the production Areas of Study taken later in the course when actual videos and films will be made. 12 The editing techniques used in a selection of feature films will be analysed, and students will be given rushes of a drama which they will be required to edit using a non-linear editing suite. Additional Costs: Hire of videos/dvds for viewing Film Production (FILPROS4) Unit: BSBCRT402A Collaborate in a creative process By second semester, second year, a student will have already acquired skills in such areas as: cinematography, sound, lighting, production management and editing. In this Area of Study students will use a combination of these skills to work as a member of a team on a film production. Students will be involved in the pre-production and production stages of the film. They will also be taught the concepts that are unique to film production such as: Film budgeting Film scheduling Working as a team Production design Location scouting Production meeting reports Lighting and sound reconnaissance Industry Knowledge (INDKNS2) Unit: BSBREL401A Establish networks This Area of Study will give an overview of the skills and knowledge required to access, increase and update knowledge of the film and television industry. The ability to work as part of a team is essential in the film and television industry and students will participate in activities to help develop their skills to be an effective team member. Industry Safety (INDSAFS1) Unit: BSBOHS509A Ensure a safe workplace This Area of Study concentrates on the very important role of workplace, health and safety issues and risk management pertinent to the film and television industry and production industry processes. Information Technology for Production (INTEPRS1) Unit: CUFPOS402A Manage media assets Today's producer is reliant on computers to quickly process and retrieve information. Productions require large amounts of paperwork, however, computers have helped to reduce this. There are numerous software packages on the market that are used in production. In this Area of Study the student will learn about: Overview of film / video production technologies File formats & compression techniques Digital asset management DVD authoring Overview of editing, grading and effect softwares. 13 Lighting for Film and Television (LIFITVS1) Unit: CUFLGT401A Implement lighting designs This Area of Study explores lighting - a very important element in cinematography. It will cover technical aspects as well as the creative side of lighting. Gripping is also covered. Topics include: Lighting Fixtures (eg HMI, Tungsten, Fluoro) Controlling light sources (eg gels, diffusers, scrims, snoots) Stands and rigging (eg C stands, mafers, polecats) Set protocol Maintenance Electricity (eg power factors, current capacities, distribution circuits) Safety Generators Special circumstances (eg underwater, rain, camera-sync strobe, moving vehicles) Lighting set-up Crew roles in lighting and grip departments Gripping Post-Production Procedures (POPRPRS4) Unit: CUFPOS501A Edit complex screen productions This Area of Study covers the processes from developing the negative photographed in production to the final release print consisting of the edited vision and sound. Topics covered include: Achieving the required moving image under special conditions Chromakey Motion Picture Film Formats Telecine Editing (Film and Off-Line Editing) Preparing 2D & 3D Graphics Mixing the Soundtrack Video to Film Wipes, Layering, Effects and Titles Negative Matching Production Design (PRODESS3) Units: BSBDES402A Interpret and respond to a design brief Production Design is not only required for feature films, but also for smaller productions. This Area of Study takes the student from the script through to the final set. Topics include: Analysis of production designs Using models and drawings for set design How to specify a set Budgeting for design Design department roles Script breakdown for design Research for design Location surveys Model making Props buying Set dressing Construction techniques Wardrobe, make-up & hairdressing Page 11 of Queensland School of Film and Television

14 Scheduling for props and wardrobe Practical work will include building models of sets as well as preparing a location survey. Students will also be taught how to breakdown scripts with reference to set design and props. Additional Costs: Materials for making models (cardboard, fabric etc). Printing of stills Production Management (PROMANS3) Units: CUFPPM403A Coordinate film and media production services and resources This Area of Study covers a wide field from managing a small production company to managing a feature film project. While the details are different, the concepts are similar. Students will develop skills that will enable them to: Breakdown a script Schedule a script Budget a script Manage and organise people Effectively run a production office Survey locations Complete paperwork Topics covered include: Roles of the production manager, location manager, unit manager, 1st AD, 2nd AD, and how they interact with each other and with the producer, director and other crew members What paperwork is required and how to fill it in Crew requirements and costings How to set up a production board Methods that can be used to breakdown and schedule Equipment requirements and costings Basic legal requirements for production. Additional Costs: Printing of stills Recording Sound and Production Technology (SORPPSS2) Unit: CUSSOU504A Create a final sound balance The Area of Study will emphasise the skills required to be a good location recordist. Besides being a "how to" unit, it will also explore procedures that ensure students adopts a professional approach (eg making detailed notes on recordings and carefully labelling all tapes). How to use sound in a production Recording live sound Mixing sound in the studio Creating sound effects Understanding how different sound equipment works Operation and maintenance of equipment This Area of Study also aims to train the student to be able to answer such questions as: Which microphone accurately records a grand piano? How would you record a jet taking off? How do you record the voice of someone on horseback? How do you record someone speaking in a car without interference from the background sound? 15 How do you record sound effects? Post-production sound topics will include: How to create and use sound effects and foley How to edit music tracks How to use a video edit suite as a multi-track studio How to record voice overs and ADR How to use timecode for synchronisation How to mix down tracks. By understanding the area of post-production sound, the student will learn how to enhance their own productions by using a creative, high fidelity audio track. Additional Costs: DV tape & blank CDs Television Commercial Production (TVCPROS4) Unit: BSBCMM401A Make a presentation Television commercial production is a very important part of the industry. Many professionals make their "bread and butter" living from commercials or rely on them for work in between films. While some professionals choose to specialise in TVCs on a permanent basis, others may use them as a stepping stone on their way to producing bigger projects. In this Area of Study students will learn: What elements make TVCs effective What paperwork is required Budgeting/scheduling of TVCs Crewing/talent considerations Storyboarding Sound track/music Timing/pacing considerations. 16 Video Production (VIDPROS2) Units: CUFPPM401A Produce programs and program sequences This Area of Study will give an overview of the production process from being handed a brief to completion of the production. Topics covered will include: Budgeting Storyboarding Camera work and lighting Continuity Directing Sound recording Editing sound and vision The Area of Study will emphasise the overall production process for a music video or short film. Lectures will be devoted to theory/role play/assessment. The tutorials will demonstrate material covered in the lectures. Students will produce a short film including writing the brief, proposal, script, and preparing the budget, as well as the actual production. Additional Costs: DV tape(s), blank DVDs Other Courses Offered Aside from the Diploma of Screen and Media course, QSFT has a number of accredited courses and training programs designed to be student-friendly and meet the demands of a competitive industry. Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) & Certificate III in Media (High School students) The QSFT s Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) and Certificate II in Media courses are designed for secondary school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the film and television industry. The two qualifications run consecutively over 4 semesters. The course is run at the QSFT s premises on a Wednesday afternoon. Certificate III in Media (Non High School students) The Certificate III in Media course is of six months duration and is open to anyone 16 years and above. Entry is either at the beginning of the year or mid year. This is a general course that covers the basics of filming, editing, industry knowledge, sound and lighting. Video Production Workshops As an introduction to the Diploma course, QSFT s Video Production Workshops are ideal for teachers, sports coaches, communications personnel, or those desiring a better understanding of film and video production. This workshop introduces new videomakers to the basic principles and practices involved in lighting, shooting, sound recording and editing video projects. Glossary Area of Study: Each semester a number of Areas of Study are taken. Each Area of Study is based on units from the Screen and Media training package. Descriptions for the Areas of Study are in the section titled Unit Synopses. Course: A course consists of a number of defined Units. An example of a course is the Diploma of Screen and Media. 17 Contact Hours (CH): Contact hours are the number of hours a student needs to spend each week in lectures, tutorials and workshops. In other words it is the time students will spend with an instructor. Performance Level Assessment: Performance Level Assessment (PLA) is an added value (unofficial) component to provide you with a more comprehensive assessment of your abilities and recognition of your efforts. It is a supplementary report that provides additional information to employers and universities concerning the achievement you demonstrated, whilst undertaking your training at QSFT. Results: At the end of each semester students will receive two sets of results. An official result and a PLA non-official result. Grade (official): The following grades are used to report on a student s performance for Units undertaken: J Competency achieved K Satisfactory to date, unit not complete L Unsatisfactory to date, retraining required M Not yet competent R Recognition of Prior Learning granted C Credit Transfer granted W Withdrawn PLA: PLA measures a student's performance for an Area of Study. PLA is a holistic evaluation of your performance during your study program. It is only applicable when you have demonstrated competency in this course. Those who receive a J will also be allocated one of the following reporting codes: PD = Distinction (GPA =6.5) You have demonstrated an exceptional level of performance against a range of PLA criteria. PC = Credit (GPA=5) You have demonstrated an advanced level of performance against a range of PLA criteria. J = Competent (GPA=4) You have demonstrated competency at the required AQF level. Semester: A semester is the time taken to complete an Area of Study. Each year there are normally two semesters. Usually, semester one is from March to June and semester two is from August to November. Unit: The Unit of competence from the Screen and Media training package.
