1 IPC-WBT-80C ESD Control Instructor Certification Program USER S GUIDE v.4 11/8/11 The ESD Control Instructor Certification program has been developed to provide industry recognized certification for ESD trainers. This guide describes the features of WBT-80C, and includes information on how to use this interactive training program. It also details suggested training demonstrations to use when teaching ESD Control. System Requirements for program: Any Windows OS Flash Player* / Browser Plug-in required. Approx. 3 MB Disk space (WBT-80C contains no audio.) * You may download the free Flash Player from the Adobe website: Installation This product will auto-install when placed in the CD-ROM drive. If your computer is not set to auto-run, please use the mouse to RIGHT-click on the CD drive icon, select Open, then double- (left) click on the setup.exe file to begin the installation program. A shortcut icon will be placed on your computer desktop to launch the program once installation is complete. License This program is licensed for use by the original purchaser of WBT-80C. After passing the Final Exam, He/she is then entitled to an ESD Instructor certificate. Directions for acquiring certificate to follow. Basic Operation The program is divided into 7 sections, accessible through the navigation buttons at the top of the screen. You may enter any section at any time, but it is recommended that you take the program in sequence, beginning with Introduction. Use the Next and Back buttons to navigate through the sections. Sections 2 through 6 conclude with a brief set of Review Questions. These questions are meant to prepare you for the Final Exam and do not count toward your final score. Any wrong answers on the Review Questions are explained so that you may learn from your mistakes.

2 Once you have reviewed all the material in sections 1 through 7, and feel confident in your knowledge, please click on the Final Exam button in the upper-right portion of your screen. Proceed through the exam by clicking on the Check Answer button, then the Play button, or right-arrow of the Final Exam window. Please select one (and only one) most correct answer for each question by clicking on the appropriate check box. If you fail on your first attempt at the exam, you are welcome to try again after appropriate review of the training materials. How to receive your ESD Instructor Certificate You must have a final score of 70% (20 correct answers) or better on the Final Exam to qualify for your Instructor Certificate. 3 Suggested Class Demonstrations for Trainers The following are some suggested demonstrations you can do to clarify topic points. Tape Dispenser Demonstration ESD Physics 1. Have one of your students pull two strips of tape from a tape dispenser roll. 2. Use an electrostatic field meter to show how the tape strips are positively charged and will repel. 3. Use the field meter to demonstrate that the surface of the dispenser is charged negative and that the tape strips are attracted to the dispenser. Importance of Grounding for Mobile Racks Storage and Transportation Issues 1. Using a surface test kit, connect one lead to one electrode and place the electrode on an electrically continuous non-esd approved mobile rack. Connect the matching lead to system ground. 2. Depress the test switch and measure the value. The reading should be greater than 1 x 10 9 ohms the ESD Association s definition of the upper value of static dissipative. 3. Repeat steps 1-2 with a rack equipped with at least two conductive casters or a grounding chain. 4. Depress the test switch and measure the value. The reading should be less than 1 x 10 9 ohms.

4 Static Producing Materials Insulator Properties 1. Rub an insulator such as a styrofoam cup or a plastic protective sheet on a tie or another fabric. 2. Measure the charge with an electrostatic field meter or a charge analyzer. 3. Demonstrate the magnitude of the charge to your students. 4. Attach a test lead with alligator clip to the insulator and the other side of the lead to ground. 5. Measure the cup again. Demonstrate to your students that the field remains and that insulators can t be grounded. 6. Place the insulator in the air stream of an air ionizer for a short moment. 7. Measure the insulator again with the field meter or charge analyzer and demonstrate the reduced or zero charge to your students. Reducing CRT-Emitted Electrostatic Charges 1. Using a portable calibrated electrostatic field meter, measure the electrostatic field of an operating CRT. 2. Ask for a volunteer to verify the reading. 3. Wipe the CRT with a staticide or Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). 4. Measure the electrostatic field again. 5. Ask the volunteer to verify to the class that the field is reduced with the application of the staticide or IPA.

5 Static Producing Activities Combing Hair 1. Ask for a volunteer, then use an electrostatic field meter or charge analyzer to show there is very little charge to the person s hair. 2. Have the volunteer comb their hair and use the meter to show how the charge significantly increases. Conductive Smock Demonstration Static Producing Clothing 1. Ask for a volunteer who is wearing polyester or silk. 2. Use an electrostatic field meter or charge analyzer to show that the material generates a static charge. 3. Have the volunteer put on a conductive smock. 4. Use the field meter to show that the charge is no longer there. Company-Specific Material In addition to the IPC training material and the demonstrations, it s important that you inform your students about company-specific ESD policies and considerations. For example, two companies may utilize different hardware for testing shoe grounders and wrist straps. There may also be different requirements regarding how often personal grounding equipment is tested. In addition, there are a number of alternative methods for packaging ESD sensitive components and assemblies.
