2 A combination of eroding audiences for returning shows and the absence of a clear hit among the crop of new programs has resulted in a slow start to the 2012/13 broadcast network prime time season. Four weeks into the campaign, the five-network average C3 ratings are down across the board, as much as 10% with most demographics. Even older viewers, for whom ratings are typically the most stable, have fallen over 6% versus the first four weeks last season. In addition, ratings are down regardless of gender with nearly equal declines for both male and female demos. Of the key demos, the largest drop comes from young adults, with a 10.2% five-network ratings drop versus a year ago. C3 data, excludes sports and specials. The loss of viewers would be much worse if it were not for NBC. The network that has suffered years of decline and ridicule has bounced back so far this year, delivering average ratings 27% to 30% higher than this time a year ago (excluding sports). NBC remains broadcast s fourth place network despite the climb, but the gap has narrowed between it and its competitors. At this time a year ago, NBC s A18-49 C3 rating was 45% below front-running Fox, but this year its 2.15 trails Fox by 10%. The fact that Fox has started the season defending its A18-49 crown is not due to its strength and delivery but rather to the missteps of other networks. A popular question coming into the season was if CBS could overtake Fox, a question based on the fact that Fox was expected to take a step back. While many saw Fox s 20% drop in its A18-49 rating coming, the network remains in first because of what people did not forecast: CBS rating plummeting 21%. As a result, CBS has not started the season battling for first but instead fighting for third. Its A18-49 rating is 3% behind ABC (2.21 vs. 2.27). Fox also has started the season leading the pack among adults and women 18-34, but falling to second behind ABC with W A 19.5% drop in its W18-49 rating has sunk CBS to an unfamiliar position, fourth place; 2% behind third place NBC. ABC remains the top network in the early season with W25-49 and W25-54 as well. Unlike W18-49, CBS climbs out of fourth place and currently sits as the second most watched network among these demos. The only major demos that CBS can claim for first place on are A25-54 and A50+. 1

C3 data, excludes sports and specials. ABC WHAT S WORKING Sunday. It is never easy to lose an established program and keep pace on that night. ABC was given a little good fortune, however, when ONCE UPON A TIME grew roots on Sunday, thus making the loss of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES a little easier to handle. The network s boldest move for 2012/13 came when it announced it was moving its Wednesday darling, REVENGE, to Sunday. Along with being able to replace HOUSEWIVES with a known commodity, it gave ABC a night billed as full of fantasy and suspense, further strengthened by the placement of new drama 666 PARK AVENUE at 10:00 following REVENGE. ABC s Sunday night has started the season with an A18-49 C3 rating 16% better than last year and W18-49 and A25-54 ratings 17% and 6% higher, respectively. It is ONCE UPON A TIME leading this surge, as the sophomore show is delivering a much larger audience than EXTREME MAKEOVER. Four weeks into the season, ONCE UPON A TIME s A18-49 rating is 77% higher than EXTREME MAKEOVER and its A25-54 rating is 54% better. ONCE UPON A TIME is making a mark with young adults as well as its A18-34 rating outpaces last year s MAKEOVER by an impressive 130%. The young audience tuning into ONCE UPON A TIME has given REVENGE a boost as well. REVENGE has posted a 2.46 A18-34 rating which not only is better than the 2.13 it earned on Wednesday last year but improves upon the 2.20 that DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES delivered. REVENGE has improved the 9:00-10:00 hour with A18-49 (+6%) and W18-49 (+3%) as well. REVENGE s only downside is the comparison to DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES among 25-54, for which its A25-54 rating is 1% below a year ago and its W25-54 rating has dropped 3%. ABC s improvement on Sunday comes despite the start of 666 PARK AVENUE. The freshman drama loses about 30% of its A18-49 lead-in, a rating that sits 15% below last year s failed PAN AM. WHAT S NOT WORKING Monday. The shine may be off the sequin, as ABC s DANCING WITH THE STARS has tumbled to start this season. Its W18-49 rating has dropped 35%, its W25-49 rating has fallen 34% and its W25-54 rating has tumbled 33%. The audience of DWTS continues to age, as well. Last year, the show owned a median age of 59.2 to start the season; this year it has climbed to It is the highest rated broadcast network show among A50+, delivering an rating. 4 The lesser lead-in has put a dent in CASTLE at 10:00, contributing to the drama s 15% drop in its W25-54 rating versus a year ago. All key demographic ratings are down for CASTLE, with the exception of A50+ with whom the aging show delivered a 9% improvement over last year s start. The result of the decline in both Monday shows has put ABC behind the pace of last year s Monday performance. ABC s Mondays overall W25-54 average rating to start the season is 28% below last year, and its A25-54 rating of 2.93 represents a 26% drop. Once one of ABC s strongest nights, Monday s A25-54 average rating makes it the network s third best night and fourth with W ABC Notes: - Thursday s SCANDAL received a full season order, mainly due to its improvement over last year s PRIVATE PRACTICE. Thursday 10:00-11:00 is up 17% with A18-49, +10% for W18-49, +15% with A25-54 and +8% with W On Wednesday, a strong start has enabled NASHVILLE to match the start of last year s REVENGE among A18-49 and W18-49 and exceed the start with A25-54 (+2%) and W25-54 (+3%). Whether that audience holds, however, is a concern. After starting with a 3.86 W25-54 rating, NASHVILLE s second episode fell 27%, and its third dropped another 8%. - MODERN FAMILY remains ABC s most watched show, but its ratings have fallen versus last year. The comedy s A18-49 rating for the first four weeks is down 11%, while its A25-54 rating has dipped 9%. That has contributed to ABC s overall Wednesday average A18-49 and A25-54 ratings to be down 10% this year. - ABC S Tuesday night A18-49 average C3 rating of 1.94 not only represents a 24% drop versus a year ago, but it puts ABC in fourth place out of the five networks, 6% behind third place Fox. - Through four weeks, ABC had yet to premiere its scheduled Friday, but SHARK TANK is keeping the night afloat. Consistently winning the 8:00-9:00 time period, its 1.80 A18-49 rating and 2.35 with A25-54 have helped ABC increase Friday night ratings. ABC hopes that those ratings can grow when the show moves to 9:00 to make room for LAST MAN STANDING and MALIBU COUNTRY in the 8:00 hour. - ABC has cancelled LAST RESORT and 666 PARK AVENUE. Each show is expected to air its full 13-episode original order. Replacements for the two shows have not been announced. CBS WHAT S WORKING Thursday. All cylinders are clicking on Thursday for CBS. At 8:00, THE BIG BANG THEORY s ratings are outpacing what it opened the season with a year ago, up 10% with A18-34, A18-49 and A25-49 and 9% with A It has more impressive results from female viewers, as its W18-34 rating has started the season 24% higher than this time last year, and its W18-49 rating is up 15%. Initially, the strategy in moving TWO AND A HALF MEN to Thursday has worked, as it has greatly improved the 8:30-9:00 time period. CBS knew that TWO AND A HALF MEN would not match last season s Monday performance but felt that, regardless of its audience erosion, it would be an upgrade on Thursday. Sure enough, despite an A18-49 rating drop of 49% versus a year ago on Monday, TWO AND A HALF MEN s rating of 3.51 marks a 40% improvement over last year s HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN. CBS also took note that PERSON OF INTEREST gained more viewers as the 2011/12 season progressed and, as a result, left the show on Thursdays at 9:00. The drama has kept that momentum and delivered a 4.00 A25-54 rating, 3% better than last year s start. PERSON OF INTEREST became an attraction for A25-54 last year, so even more impressive this season is the 10% growth in its A18-34 audience and a W18-34 rating that is 24% higher than a year go. The other move CBS made was escorting THE MENTALIST off Thursday to make room for its new drama ELEMENTARY. Despite THE MENTALIST likely winning the time period, like TWO AND A HALF MEN, CBS knew its audience was trending down. Instead, it used the momentum of PERSON OF INTEREST to launch a new show, and the early results are encouraging. The 2.91 A18-49 average rating of ELEMENTARY is identical to PERSON OF INTEREST and also is a 6% improvement over what THE MENTALIST supplied last year at this time. The only downside is that, while ELEMENTARY has enhanced the A25-54 time period rating by 1%, THE MENTALIST was 3% better with W

5 As a result of all this, CBS Thursday night has started the season with a 3.48 A18-49 rating and a 4.57 with A25-54, up 13% and 9%, respectively, from a year ago. WHAT S NOT WORKING Monday. It was known that CBS Monday night would not produce the same numbers as in 2011/12. This year, the night would not benefit from all the news that surrounded Charlie Sheen, Ashton Kutcher and TWO AND A HALF MEN last year, and in addition, the CBS comedies would go up against THE VOICE on NBC. While a decline was expected, a freefall was not. CBS Mondays average A18-49 C3 rating sits at 2.59 after the first four weeks, a stunning 42% lower than a year ago. In addition, its A25-54 rating (3.19) is down 41%, and its W25-54 rating (3.65) has fallen 38%. The show started the season with a 2.04 A18-49 rating, far off the 2011/12 pace set by 2 BROKE GIRLS with a In addition, its A18-49 rating for represents a 36% fall from its lead in HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. On November 16, CBS moved to fix the problem by cancelling PARTNERS effective immediately. 2 BROKE GIRLS has started the season with a 3.40 A18-49 rating, 26% less than what it earned at 8:30 last year and falling short of TWO AND A HALF MEN by 51%. MIKE & MOLLY kept the Monday decline going with an A25-54 rating decline of 28% and a fall of 31% with A The biggest surprise has come at 10:00, where the audience for HAWAII FIVE-0 has dwindled. Even with THE VOICE concluding at 10:00, HAWAII FIVE-0 has had trouble delivering an audience level even close to a year ago. It s down 34% with A25-54 and has plummeted 36% with W Instead of winning the time period like it did a year ago, HAWAII FIVE-0 has fallen to third, behind REVOLUTION on NBC and ABC s CASTLE. CBS Notes: - So far this season, Thursday is the only night that CBS has improved over last year. In addition to the loss of viewers on Monday, A18-49 and A25-54 average ratings are down about 10%-15% on Tuesday and Wednesday while Friday and Saturday ratings have deteriorated about 20%. Sunday s ratings have not fallen as far, but the night is dogged with A18-49 and A25-54 declines of 8% and 10%, respectively. - Last year s freshman drama UNFORGETTABLE was pulled in favor of VEGAS, but the big-star, high budget drama has fallen short of expectations. It has averaged a 3.19 A25-54 rating, 14% lower than UNFORGETTABLE started with last year. - A 1.34 A25-54 rating was more than enough for MADE IN JERSEY to become this season s first cancelled program. C.S.I.: NY was moved from 8:00 to 9:00 to replace it, while UNDERCOVER BOSS will now launch Friday for CBS. - Last year, in addition to new shows that improved time periods, CBS had veteran programs pitch in with surprisingly elevated ratings as well. No such luck to begin this season; A25-54 ratings are down 15% FOR CRIMINAL MINDS, THE AMAZING RACE and C.S.I, while SURVIVOR (-6%) and BLUE BLOODS (-21%) have dropped as well. Even NCIS could not escape. The A25-54 C3 rating for the Tuesday drama is down 7%, while its spinoff, NCIS: LOS ANGELES, has an A25-54 rating 9% lower than last year. - It seems like every network has a show that receives critical praise and award consideration, which seems to mask the fact that its ratings are marginal. For CBS, that program may be THE GOOD WIFE. In its second year on Sunday, the Julianna Margulies drama is delivering A25-54 and W25-54 audiences 16% less than a year ago. 4

6 CW WHAT S WORKING Wednesday. Two of the goals the CW set for this season are being accomplished on Wednesday night. The first was to re-establish a brand through programming reminiscent of the old WB days, and second, be all about A18-34, not just W Wednesday has brought that combination with the new show ARROW and the returning show SUPERNATURAL. The good looking casts, trendy clothes, and pop culture references have drawn in more core A18-34 viewers than Wednesday a year ago was able to do. Through four weeks, CW s Wednesday average rating has soared 21% higher than at this time last season, and its A18-49 audience has climbed 37%. The jury is out, however, as to whether Wednesday has improved because of ARROW and SUPERNATURAL or because the night had nowhere to go but up given the disaster that was Wednesday night a year ago. Last year, Wednesday led off with H8R, a reality show that was pulled off the schedule after only four episodes. The night concluded with AMERICA S NEXT TOP MODEL, the long running show that hit its all-time low rating levels. The fact is ARROW is the network s second highest rated show with A18-34 (1.13), behind VAMPIRE DIARIES (including only original telecasts; the first week of the season offered a repeat of VAMPIRE DIARIES), and it has improved CW s time period by 162%. The move of SUPERNATURAL has paid off as well as its 0.94 A18-34 rating (excluding the repeat during the week of September 24), marks a 13% improvement over last year s AMERICA S NEXT TOP MODEL. WHAT S NOT WORKING Tuesday. Another goal of the CW was to pair programs to create nights that would carry viewers throughout the evening. CW accomplished this on Tuesday by scheduling HART OF DIXIE and EMILY OWENS, M.D. and nicknaming the night doctor, doctor. The problem is the night appears on life support, as ratings have started well below last year. CW started the season a week later this season (week of October 1), so when comparing to last year, the apples-toapples comparison is the first four weeks of the 2011/12 season to weeks two through four this year. That comparison puts CW s A18-34 and A18-49 Tuesday night average ratings to start this season 37% below last year. In its second year, the move of HART OF DIXIE from Monday to Tuesday dampened its ratings as well as lowering the 8:00-9:00 time period. Last year, filled the slot with a 0.79 A18-34 rating and a 1.20 with W HART OF DIXIE has filled in with a 0.64 and 1.00, down 19% and 17%. At 9:00, CW cancelled RINGER after just one season and replaced it with EMILY OWENS, M.D. Its lightheartedness is a contrast to the dark, mysterious RINGER, but that is not the only difference; its audience is much different as well. Unfortunately for CW, the premiere of EMILY OWENS brought in much less of an audience, as much as 26% lower with W18-34 and 35% lower with A CW Prime Time Program Ratings 2012/13 Season-to-Date - 10/1/ /21/12 Ranked on A18-34 C3 Average Rating A18-34 W18-34 A18-49 Program # TC C3 Rtg C3 Rtg Rank C3 Rtg Rank VAMPIRE DIARIES ARROW SUPERNATURAL BEAUTY AND THE BEAST HART OF DIXIE GOSSIP GIRL EMILY OWENS MD AMERICA'S TOP MODEL NIKITA CW Notes: - More momentum potential exists on Thursday for CW. BEAUTY AND THE BEST has given the network a lift, delivering a 1.30 W18-49 rating for its first 2 episodes, which topped the start of the 2011/12 time period occupant, SECRET CIRCLE, by 3%. - GOSSIP GIRL is not as much riding off into the sunset as much as it is fading away. The series final season has started with a 0.82 W18-34 rating, a significant 39% fall from the start last year. The once popular series will conclude this December after 10 new episodes this fall. - ARROW and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST appear to be in position to join VAMPIRE DIARIES as the network s most popular shows. A difference between the new shows and the returning one, however, is the difference between young and old. VAMPIRE DIARIES is the youngest skewing show on CW, owning a median age of 31.5 at the start of this season. ARROW and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are two of the oldest skewing shows, bringing in audiences with median ages of 46.3 and 43.3, respectively. 5

7 Fox WHAT S WORKING Sunday. Yes, Fox s Sunday continues to be strong, but not with the viewers we are accustomed to seeing. Sunday s animation continues to dominate A18-34 viewers across all of broadcast prime time, but Fox s growth on Sunday has come from older viewers. Fox s Sunday night average A18-34 rating has started this season 3% below last year, but its A25-54 rating is 4% higher (2.80 vs. 2.68). That surge is coming from both M25-54 (+6%) and W25-54 (+4%), as well as a lift with A18-49 (+2%). All five programs (CLEVELAND SHOW, THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, BOB S BURGERS and AMERICAN DAD) rank in the top ten among A25-54, with THE SIMPSONS (3.46) ranking third and FAMILY GUY (3.32) placing fourth. The difference this year is the removal of the repeat animated comedy to start the night. Fox made the sports program, THE OT (not included in this analysis) a permanent fixture, eliminating the need for an encore of one of its Sunday shows. Since the night no longer has a program that produced a 0.62 A25-54 rating, the nightly average increases. WHAT S NOT WORKING Tuesday. For years, Kevin Reilly, President of Fox Entertainment, has stated his dream was to have a full night of comedies. This year, he has accomplished that, but early returns show this dream may be a nightmare. The strong freshman season for NEW GIRL a year ago gave Fox hope that it had an anchor for a night of comedy and surrounded it with two new sitcoms. What Fox ignored, however, was the declining audience for NEW GIRL as 2011/12 progressed, a trend that continued right into this season. NEW GIRL started the year with a premiere episode C3 A18-49 rating of 2.93, a far cry from the 4.83 last year. As a result, it was not the launching pad Fox had hoped for, and the two new sitcoms have not received the sampling needed to make them competitive. BEN AND KATE, which leads into NEW GIRL, has started with a 1.57 A18-49 C3 rating, and THE MINDY PROJECT began the season averaging a Considering the slow start and the fact that the popular GLEE was removed to make room for these shows, Tuesday ratings are down significantly for Fox. Compared to last year, Fox s Tuesday night average A18-49 rating has plummeted 45% (2.07 vs. 3.75), while its A18-34 rating dropped 47% (2.18 vs. 4.15). The absence of GLEE has damaged Fox s female ratings on Tuesday, as ratings for both W18-34 and W18-49 are half of what they were four weeks into last year. Rating declines are significant, ranging from a 21% fall on Wednesday to the 45% drop on Tuesday. Monday pitched in with a 43% freefall, and Thursday joined in with a 24% decline. - Monday has been dragged down by the dismal performance of the new drama MOB DOCTOR. In trying to replace HOUSE with another doctor, Fox fell flat with MOB DOCTOR s 1.07 A18-49 rating and 1.25 with A HOUSE, which was considered to be having a bad year last season, managed an A18-49 rating that was 200% higher. So why is MOB DOCTOR still on the air? Probably because the plan going into the season was to replace it with the Kevin Bacon series THE FOLLOWING in first quarter. - It appears that just a change in judges was not enough to lift THE X-FACTOR to the level many had hoped for originally when the show launched last year. Regardless of the day, ratings are down for the series including a 20% drop with A18-49 and W18-49 and a 22% fall with adults and women Simon Cowell stated during Fox s upfront presentation, when asked about THE VOICE on NBC, I wish them well, but second is not great. We wonder if his opinion on second place has changed given that X-FACTOR trails THE VOICE among A18-49 by 26%. - Is it the show or the day? Now in its fourth season, GLEE s ratings on Thursday pale in comparison to what it started with on Tuesday last year. Among W18-34, GLEE has produced a 4.08 rating, which is a strong rating, unless you put it up against the 5.78 for its start last year (-29%). Ratings are down 23% for A18-49 and W18-49 as well. 6

8 NBC WHAT S WORKING Beginning of the Week Strategy. NBC was clear that its 2012/13 focus this year was on Monday and Tuesday. Using the platform of SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL to promote Monday and Tuesday made much more sense than to use it to promote programming on Wednesday and Thursday that would take place three to four days later. Of course, it is a lot easier to put this plan into play when you have a show like THE VOICE. Seeing the strength of THE VOICE and the position NBC was in, the concern of burning the show out took a back seat to getting everything NBC could out of the show now. Therefore, THE VOICE would run two cycles this season, one in the fall and one in the winter and spring, and each would be the anchor on both Monday and Tuesday nights. In addition, NBC had the benefit of heading into the season with a very low rating base on these two nights. On Monday, THE VOICE replaced last year s THE SIN- OFF and, by doing so swapped a 1.52 A18-49 C3 rating with a 4.39, a lift of 190%. All key demo ratings are up significantly, as much as 200% with A This gave the new drama REVOLUTION the lead-in it needed, and although its A18-49 rating lost 20% of that lead-in, REVOLUTION has started with a 3.56 A18-49 rating, more than enough to easily win the time period. REVOLUTION also has the advantage of being compared to last year s time slot occupant, THE PLAYBOY CLUB. The over-hyped, failed drama from last year only delivered a 1.37 A18-49 C3 rating, putting REVOLUTION 160% better than that. THE VOICE worked its magic on Tuesday as well. Starting the season, THE VOICE has given NBC an A18-49 nearly double that of THE BIGGEST LOSER a year ago (3.94 vs. 1.98). The audience shrinks a bit as THE VOICE s 3.94 falls to a 2.48 for the new comedy GO ON and then to a 2.09 for THE NEW NORMAL, but despite the drop, NBC s average Tuesday rating is still up considerably. Overall, NBC s Tuesday prime time A18-49 and A25-54 ratings have improved 40% over last year, while female ratings, like W18-34 and W18-49, have gone up as well, 53% and 38%, respectively. WHAT S NOT WORKING Thursday. The strong effort on Monday and Tuesday left very little for Thursday, and the night that was once the pride and joy of NBC has bottomed out. The news program has delivered a 0.83 A18-49 rating and a 1.08 with A That puts NBC s 10: audience 46% lower than last year (PRIME SUSPECT), 62% behind ABC (SCANDAL) and trailing CBS by 71% (ELEMENTARY).
