5 1 Introduction to Synapse An Introduction to Synapse Synapse is a modular system designed for the broadcast industry. High density, intuitive operation and high quality processing are key features of this system. Synapse offers a full range of converters and processing modules. Please visit the AXON Digital Design Website at to obtain the latest information on our new products and updates. Local Control Panel The local control panel gives access to all adjustable parameters and provides status information for any of the cards in the Synapse frame, including the Synapse rack controller. The local control panel is also used to back-up and restore card settings. Please refer to the RRC18, RRC10 and RRC04 manuals for a detailed description of the local control panel, the way to set-up remote control over IP and for frame related settings and status information. Remote Control Capabilities The remote control options are explained in the rack controller (RRC18/RRC10/RRC04) manual. The method of connection to a computer using Ethernet is described in the RRC manual.! CHECK-OUT: SYNAPSE SET-UP SOFTWARE WILL INCREASE SYSTEM FLEXIBILITY OF ONE OR MORE SYNAPSE FRAMES Although not required to Set-Up a Synapse frame, you are strongly advised to use a remote personal computer or laptop PC with the Synapse Set-Up Software as this increases the ease of use and understanding of the modules. 3

6 2 Unpacking and Placement Unpacking The Axon Synapse card must be unpacked in an anti-static environment. Care must be taken NOT to touch components on card always handle the card carefully by the edges. The card must be stored and shipped in anti-static packaging, to ensure that these precautions are followed will prevent premature failure from components mounted on the board. Locating the card The Synapse card can be placed vertically in a SFR18 frame or horizontally in a SFR04 frame. Locate the two guide slots to be used, slide in the mounted circuit board, and push it firmly to locate the connectors. Correct insertion of the card is essential as a card that is not located properly may show valid indicators, but does not function correctly. REMARK: On power up all LEDs will light for a few seconds, this is the time it takes to initialize the card. 4

7 3 A Quick Start When powering-up On powering up the Synapse frame, the card set will use basic data and default initialization settings. All LEDs will light during this process. After initialization, several LEDs will remain lit the exact number and configuration is dependant upon the number of inputs connected and the status of the inputs. Default settings In its default condition, the SDB20 will act as an audio deembedder. Group 1, channel 1-4, will be present on the AES/EBU output connectors 1 4. The AES/EBU outputs follow the analog outputs and they will output channel 1 and 2 as Left and Right in AES/EBU output-1 and channel 3 and 4 as Left and Right in AES/EBU output-2. Changing settings and parameters The front panel controls or the Synapse Set-Up Software can be used to change settings. An overview of the settings can be found in chapter 5, 6 and 7 of this manual. Front Panel Control Front Panel Display and Cursor [No Alarms] Settings are displayed and changed as follows; Use the cursor arrows on the front panel to select the menu and parameter to be displayed and/or changed. Press Press Press Press To go forward through the menu structure. To go back through the menu structure. To move up within a menu or increase the value of a parameter. To move down through a menu or decrease the value of a parameter. REMARK: Whilst editing a setting, pressing twice will reset the value to its default. 5

8 Example of changing Parameters using Front Panel Control With the display as shown below RRC18 [Select Card] >S01=SFS10 Pressing the selects the SFS10 in frame slot 01. The display changes, to indicate that the SFS10 has been selected. In this example the Settings menu item is indicated. All menu items can be monitored and/or changed in this way. Changing a setting has an immediate effect. 6

9 Synapse Set-Up Software Synapse Set-Up Software can be used to change the settings of Synapse modules from a PC, either locally or remotely. The software enables communication based on TCP/IP between the Set-Up PC and Synapse frames/modules. Each Synapse frame is addressed through its rack controller s unique IP address, giving access to each module, its menus and adjustment items. The Synapse Set-Up Software has access to data contained within the Synapse module and displays it on a GUI. The software has an intuitive structure following that of the module that it is controlling. Having selected the desired Frame and Module from the GUI Synapse Network View, select the menu item that you wish to open. Opening the menu item gives a complete list of available properties with their associated Value. For example to change a setting e.g. SDI-Format, select SDI- Format form the list of settings by double clicking to open a dialogue box. The dialogue box allows parameters to be changed or set to default value. On completion close the dialogue box. 10 4 The SDB20 Card Introduction The AXON SDB20 is a digital serial component video (DSC 270 Mbit) embedded audio extractor that outputs four local audio signals on the board itself and eight Add-on audio signals to two Add-on cards. All outputs of the SDB20 can be configured independently and every configuration is possible. The SDB20 outputs to two AES/EBU digital audio outputs and four balanced analog audio outputs. All outputs can be used simultaneously. Key Features The Key features of the SDB20 are as follows Routing and extracting of audio Audio can be routed with SDB20 from any embedded audio channel to any addressable output channel. There are 4 local-outputs and up to 8 Add-on outputs. Every local or Add-on output can be independently assigned to one of the 16 embedded audio channels. This enables the user to have total control of all embedded audio in the serial digital video signal. Phase and Gain controls are available on all four output channels to enable adjustment and control of the local audio outputs. In addition, a maximum of two Add-on cards can be inserted to connect all 8 Add-on-outputs and take full advantage of the SDB20. A total of 12 audio channels can be extracted using this master-slave concept. All signals from Out_1 to Out_4 are routed to the digital outputs AES_1/2/3/4 and analog outputs Analog_1/2/3/4 and are available on the backplane. Additionally, eight channels of extracted audio can be routed to AddOn_A1/2/3/4 and AddOn_B1/2/3/4 which can be accessed by two Add-on cards, AddOn_A and AddOn_B. Note, that the Phase and Gain control of the Add-on outputs of the SDB20 can be manipulated on the add-on cards. Embedded audio data packet formatting One of the important advantages of Serial Digital Interface (SDI) for video, defined by SMPTE 259M is the ability to embed several channels of digital audio in the digital domain. This is particularly useful in large systems where separate routing of digital audio becomes a cost consideration and the assurance that the audio is associated with the appropriate video. SDI can handle up to 16 channels of embedded audio with sample-rate of 48kHz and word length of 20-bits. 8

11 The four audio channels from audio group 1 are ordered such that channels 1 and 2 make one channel pair and channel 3 and 4 make another. Audio group 2 contains channel 5 and 6 as one channel pair, and so on. 9

12 5 Analog reference level switches Level switches The SDB20 has high quality analog to digital audio converters. To maintain maximum performance and optimum noise levels The input section of this card has a selectable analog gain stage that ensures the D/A conversion IC is working in the ideal range of its input stage. Reference levels of +12dBu, +15dBu, +18dBu and +24dBu have been implemented. +12dBu This setting produces a +12dBu analog audio level when 0dBFS is applied to the digital input (at a load of 100kOhm). +15dBu This setting produces a +15dBu analog audio level when 0dBFS is applied to the digital input (at a load of 100kOhm). +18dBu This setting produces a +18dBu analog audio level when 0dBFS is applied to the digital input (at a load of 100kOhm). +24dBu This setting produces a +24dBu analog audio level when 0dBFS is applied to the digital input (at a load of 100kOhm). NOTE Hardware version 0200 & software 0507 and up do not have dipswitches. They have been replaced by software settings. (See chapter 6 Settings.) 10

13 6 Settings Menu Introduction The settings menu displays the current state of each setting within the SDB20 and enables the item to be changed or adjusted. Settings can be changed using the front panel of the Synapse frame (SFR18 or SFR04) or Synapse Set-Up Software. Please refer to chapter 3 for information on the Synapse front panel control and Synapse Set-Up Software. Out_1 Out_1 defines which channel of embedded audio (Ch_1 to Ch_16) is to be routed to this output. Any channel can be selected, even if the channel is selected by another output. The Default setting is Ch_1. Out_2 Out_2 defines which channel of embedded audio (Ch_1 to Ch_16) is to be routed to this output. Any channel can be selected, even if the channel is selected by another output. The Default setting is Ch_2. Out_3 Out_3 defines which channel of embedded audio (Ch_1 to Ch_16) is to be routed to this output. Any channel can be selected, even if the channel is selected by another output. The Default setting is Ch_3. Out_4 Out_4 defines which channel of embedded audio (Ch_1 to Ch_16) is to be routed to this output. Any channel can be selected, even if the channel is selected by another output. The Default setting is Ch_4. AddOn_A1 The setting of AddOn_A1 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel A1. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_A1 is Ch_5. AddOn_A2 The setting of AddOn_A2 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel A2. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_A2 is Ch_6. 11

14 AddOn_A3 The setting of AddOn_A3 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel A3. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_A3 is Ch_7. AddOn_A4 The setting of AddOn_A4 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel A4. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_A4 is Ch_8. AddOn_B1 The setting of AddOn_B1 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel B1. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_B1 is Ch_9 AddOn_B2 The setting of AddOn_B2 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel B2. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_B2 is Ch_10. AddOn_B3 The setting of AddOn_B3 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel B3. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_B3 is Ch_11. AddOn_B4 The setting of AddOn_B4 determines which of the 16 channels available in the incoming audio stream are select for audio channel B4. Selection can be made between Ch_1..Ch_16. The default setting of AddOn_B4 is Ch_12. Gain-Ch_1 The level of Out_1 is determined by the Gain control Gain- Ch_1. The audio level can be adjusted between +12dB and 60 db in steps of 0.25dB. Below 60dB the audio is muted and the display shows dB. The default setting is 0.00dB. Gain-Ch_2 The level of Out_2 is determined by the Gain control Gain- Ch_2. The audio level can be adjusted between +12dB and 60 db in steps of 0.25dB. Below 60dB the audio is muted and the display shows: db. The default setting is 0.00dB. 12

15 Gain-Ch_3 The level of Out_3 is determined by the Gain control Gain- Ch_3. The audio level can be adjusted between +12dB and 60 db in steps of 0.25dB. Below 60dB the audio is muted and the display shows: db. The default setting is 0.00dB.. Gain-Ch_4 The level of Out_4 is determined by the Gain control Gain- Ch_4. The audio level can be adjusted between +12dB and 60 db in steps of 0.25dB. Below 60dB the audio is muted and the display shows: db. The default setting is 0.00dB. Phase-Ch_1 The phase of the audio of Out_1 can be adjusted using Phase_Ch_1. The user can choose between 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shift. The default setting is 0 degrees. Phase-Ch_2 The phase of the audio of Out_2 can be adjusted using Phase_Ch_2. The user can choose between 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shift. The default setting is 0 degrees. Phase-Ch_3 The phase of the audio of Out_3 can be adjusted using Phase_Ch_3. The user can choose between 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shift. The default setting is 0 degrees. Phase-Ch_4 The phase of the audio of Out_4 can be adjusted using Phase_Ch_4. The user can choose between 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase shift. The default setting is 0 degrees. Out_1/2 Out_1/2 allows two audio outputs to be selected between Mono and Stereo. The default setting is Stereo. Out_3/4 Out_1/2 allows two audio outputs to be selected between Mono and Stereo. The default setting is Stereo. EDH-Det This setting allows the user to choose between Active-Picture (Active-P) or Full-Field (Full-F) EDH detection. 13

16 Note These settings are only available for hardware version 0300 and software version 0507 and up. Previous versions have dipswitches on the boards. 0dBfsout_1 The setting 0dBFs-out_1 sets the audio level that gives a fullscale output on channel 1 The available settings are +12 dbu, +15dBu, +18dBu and 24dBu. 0dBfsout_2 The setting 0dBFs-out_2 sets the audio level that gives a fullscale output on channel 2 The available settings are +12 dbu, +15dBu, +18dBu and 24dBu. 0dBfsout_3 The setting 0dBFs-out_3 sets the audio level that gives a fullscale output on channel 3 The available settings are +12 dbu, +15dBu, +18dBu and 24dBu. 0dBfsout_4 The setting 0dBFs-out_4 sets the audio level that gives a fullscale output on channel 4 The available settings are +12 dbu, +15dBu, +18dBu and 24dBu. 14

17 7 Status Menu Introduction The status menu indicates the current status of each item listed below. SDI-Input This status item indicates the presence of a valid serial digital video signal is present at the input. SDI-Input indicates if an input signal is NA (Not Available) or Present. GrpInUse GrpInUse indicates the audio groups that are already present in the incoming SDI signal. The indication of a group, or groups being present is as follows, 1, 2_, etc. When no groups are present GrpInUse indicates. Audio-CH_1 The status menu item Audio-Ch_1 indicates the status of audio data assigned to channel Out_1. When this channel does not contain audio, this item will indicate NA. If embedded audio is present and not clipped it will indicate Ok. Due to mis-adjustment of Gain-Ch_1, the audio signal can be raised above 0 dbfs, a distorted audio signal will be the result. In this situation Audio-Ch_1 indicates Clipped and the DATA-ERROR-led on the SDB20 will illuminate. Audio-CH_2 The status menu item Audio-Ch_2 indicates the status of audio data assigned to channel Out_2. When this channel does not contain audio, this item will indicate NA. If embedded audio is present and not clipped it will indicate Ok. Due to mis-adjustment of Gain-Ch_2, the audio signal can be raised above 0 dbfs, a distorted audio signal will be the result. In this situation Audio-Ch_2 indicates Clipped and the DATA-ERROR-led on the SDB20 will illuminate. Audio-CH_3 The status menu item Audio-Ch_3 indicates the status of audio data assigned to channel Out_3. When this channel does not contain audio, this item will indicate NA. If embedded audio is present and not clipped it will indicate Ok. Due to mis-adjustment of Gain-Ch_3, the audio signal can be raised above 0 dbfs, a distorted audio signal will be the result. Audio_A1 The status item Audio_A1 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 1 of Add-on card A. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_A2 The status item Audio_A2 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 2 of Add-on card A. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_A3 The status item Audio_A3 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 3 of Add-on card A. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_A4 The status item Audio_A4 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 4 of Add-on card A. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_B1 The status item Audio_B1 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 1 of Add-on card B. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_B2 The status item Audio_B2 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 2 of Add-on card B. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. 16

19 Audio_B3 The status item Audio_B3 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 3 of Add-on card B. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. Audio_B4 The status item Audio_B4 indicates the status of the audio data assigned to channel 4 of Add-on card B. OK indicates that the audio channels are present, NA indicates the audio is not available. ANC-stat ANC-stat, Ancillary Status, indicates that embedded audio is present and valid. ANC-stat indicates if an input signal is OK, NA (not available) or Error. EDH- Stat EDH-Stat, indicates the status of the EDH within the incoming SDI signal. OK is indicated if the status of the detected EDH does not indicate errors. UES is shown if an EDH data block is not present. EDA is displayed if an EDH error has previously been detected by another card in the SDI chain. EDH is displayed if a previously undetected EDH error is detected by this device. FPGA-Stat FPGA-Stat displays the status of the internal processor of the SDB20. The status is indicated as Ok or Error. 17

20 8 Events Menu Introduction An event is a special message that is generated on the card asynchronously. This means that it is not the response to a request to the card, but a spontaneous message. What is the Goal of an event? The goal of events is to inform the environment about a changing condition on the card. A message may be broadcast to mark the change in status. The message is volatile and cannot be retrieved from the system after it has been broadcast. There are several means by which the message can be filtered. SDB20 Events The events reported by the SDB20 are as follows; Announcements Announcements is not an event. This item is only used for switching the announcement of status changes on/off. 0=off, other =on Input Input can be selected between = no event, is the priority setting. EDH status EDH status can be selected between = no event, is the priority setting. ANC status ANC status can be selected between = no event, is the priority setting. What information is available in an event? The message consists of the following items; 1) A message string to show what has happened in text, for example: INP_LOSS, REF_LOSS, INP_RETURN. 2) A tag that also shows what happens, but with a predefined number: e.g. 1 (= loss of input), 2 (= loss of reference), 129(= = return of input). For a list of these predefined tags see the table on the next page. 3) A priority that marks the importance of an event. This value is defined by the user and can have any value between 1 and 255, or 0 when disabled. 4) A slot number of the source of this event. 18

21 The Message String The message string is defined in the card and is therefore fixed. It may be used in controlling software like Synapse Set-up to show the event. The Tag The tag is also defined in the card. The tag has a fixed meaning. When controlling or monitoring software should make decisions based on events, it is easier to use the tag instead of interpreting a string. The first implementation is the tag controlled switch in the GPI16. In cases where the event marks a change to fault status (e.g. 1 for Loss of Input) the complement is marked by the tag increased by 128 (80 hex ) (e.g. 129 (81 hex ) for Return of Input). Defining Tags The tags defined for the SDB20 are: Event Menu Item Tag Description Announcements 0 or NA 0 or NA Announcing of report and control values Input 01 hex =INP_LOSS 81 hex =INP_RETURN primary input lost or returned EDH-Status 03 hex =EDH_ERROR 83 hex =EDH_OK EDH error occurred ANC-Status 04 hex =ANC_ERROR 84 hex =ANC_OK ANC status error The Priority The priority is a user-defined value. The higher the priority of the alarm, the higher this value. Setting the priority to Zero disables the announcement of this alarm. Alarms with priorities equal or higher than the ErrorThreshold setting of the RRC will cause the error LED on the Synapse rack front panel to light. The Address Together with the message string or the tag, the slot number or address of the card is relevant to be able to assign the event to a certain card. 19

22 9 LED Indication Error LED The error LED indicates an error if the internal logic of the SDB20 card is not configured correctly or has a hardware failure. Input LED This LED indicated the presence of a valid SDI video signal on the input. ANC Data LED Indicates the presence of embedded audio within the SDI input signal. Data Error LED This LED indicate two different types of error: - ANC (embedded audio) checksum error. - EDH error - Audio Peak Detection Connection LED This LED illuminates after the card has initialised. The LED lights for 0.5 seconds every time a connection is made to the card. 20

24 Stand-Alone Mode 11 Setup Examples Extraction of 4 audio channels using the SDB20. This example shows how 4 channels of audio can be extracted from the SDI input of the SDB20. Embedded audio in channel 1 to 4 (group 1) is extracted to the local digital and analog outputs of the SDB20. Others settings in the Settings menu do not effect the functionality of this example and are not shown. SDB20 Settings-Menu Out_1: Out_2: Out_3: Out_4: Out_1/2: Out_3/4: Ch_1 Ch_2 Ch_3 Ch_4 Stereo Stereo ADD-ON Mode Extraction of 12 audio channels using a SDB20 and two DAC24 s (ADD- ON cards). This example shows how 12 channels of digital audio can be extracted from the serial digital video signal using an SDB20 and two DAC24 s. Embedded audio in channel 1 to 4 (group 1) is extracted to the local digital and analog outputs of the SDB20. Embedded audio in channel 5 to 8 (group 2) is extracted and routed to the DAC24 right next to the SDB20 (AddOn_A) and embedded audio in channel 9 to 12 (group 3) is extracted to the second DAC24 (AddOn_B). Other settings in the Settings menu do not effect the functionality of this example and are not shown.
