Latest news ABRSM Parent Information Night- December 10th There will be a parent information evening about ABRSM exams on Sunday, December 9th from 4.00-5.00pm in Room 35. The Doha representative from Doha College, Chantelle Laubscher will come to discuss the exams, registration, and payment. This information night is only for parents of students in the Academic Programme. ABRSM Registration (Theory and Practical Exams) The registration and payment for the ABRSM practical and theory exams will be on Sunday, January 13th from 2-6pm in the reception area at QMA. Chantelle Laubscher is the ABRSM representative in Doha and can be contacted by email: abrsmqatar@gmail.com or http://qa.abrsm.org/ (ABRSM website) HOW TO REGISTER on January 13th at QMA: 1. ABRSM will have a card machine and will also accept cheques made out to Doha College. (The fees go through Doha College Accounts who will then transfer it to London.) 2. ABSOLUTEY NO CASH!!!! ABRSM cannot accept cash 3. If students do not apply on the day they can apply at Doha College Al Waab or West Bay campuses before the final date, Friday, January 18. 4. Latest news The Katara European Jazz Festival 2018 The 5th Katara European Jazz Festival will be held in the Esplanade by the beach in Katara. The event will take place from Nov. 6 to Nov. 10. The new location will allow more visitors to attend the festival. The Jazz Festival will involve 13 European Embassies: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Romania, and Switzerland. Free workshops for students. No need to sign up beforehand. Latest news Workshops for Schools The Arab Music Dep. have continued to conduct their workshop series for different schools in Qatar. Qatar Academy, AKIS, and the British International School will be visiting QMA for a presentation on Arab musical instruments this month. Music Therapy at Hamad Hospital The Arab music department will be launching a new project and collaboration with Hamad hospital. They will be conducting a series of sessions for patients in the psychiatry department. This collaboration was set up with the support of Dr. Suhaila Ghuloum (FRCPsych) and Dr. Heeti. The Arab Dep. are hoping to provide the patients with a session entitled "Reactivating Memory Through Music". The session will focus on reactivating patient memories through music and sounds (such as Pearling sounds, nahaam). The session will also focus on Khaleegi rhythmic pattern such as sameri, Khamari, Fjeri, and the National Anthem. The Arab music department's faculty will be conducting these sessions using different instruments such as Oud, Drums, Rababa, Nay. The Arab Dep. are not trained music therapy specialists, however we believe that their sessions will aid the patients through music. Professional Development for Music Teachers in Qatar (QMTG) Maha Seif and Ahmed Karawi will conduct a presentation about the Eastern violin called Kaman. They will discuss and demonstrate the difference between the Western classical violin and the Eastern violin, which is the same instrument that produces two different styles of music. Parent's Meeting On the 4th of October, Yassine Ayari (Head of the Arab Music Department), held a parent's meeting to discuss the Arab music department's musical programme, curriculum, exams, recitals and other important information. 5

Key Signature (If you know the answers, share it with your private lesson teacher) Teachers will write student s names down on a slip of paper and students will put their paper into the box labeled, Kid s Corner??? outside the office of the Head of the Western Music Department. A drawing will be held each month and a winner announced on the notice board outside the office and maybe something special will be received.??? 6
Important Information: Arab Music Department Shrqiyyat Practical Exam The Sharqiyyat is for all students that are level 1and above in their instrument and that have completed 18 months of instrumental tuition (Academic Programme ONLY). Examinations will be held on the 12th of January 2019 and the 4th of May, 2019. The exams have a panel of a minimum of three teachers. The examination includes set repertoire pieces, maqam drills, sequences, and sight-reading requirements. Below is the syllabus for all instruments and levels this academic year. Please get in touch with your child s teacher for more information. What Parent's Can Do To Help Their Child: Reduce after school activities Be sure to leave and collect your child in and from his class room Attend his instrumental lesson without disturbing the teaching process Be involved in your child s progress (ask the teacher/send email/take appointment) Have your music stand at home Have your foot stand at home Listen to your child play Create a schedule for practice Attend recitals and concerts to support your child 7

These times are for students that will not be required to take the internal exam. Students are reminded to wear performance attire for the recital.
