New Jersey Youth Symphony New Jersey s most prestigious tiered orchestral program, offering ensemble education for students in grades 3 12, founded in 1979 500 of the state s best youth musicians and 15 ensembles committed to excellence Welcoming Helen Cha-Pyo as Conductor and Artistic Director in the 2018-19 season Winner of the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Festival and Competition in Vienna in July 2017 Part of Wharton Arts, an organization with a passion for bringing performances and high-quality music educational opportunities to audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities
In the Community Wharton Arts largest engagement program is the Paterson Music Project (PMP), which uses music as a vehicle for social change empowering children through the communal experience of ensemble learning and performance. 250 Title One students in grades 1-8 engage deeply with music for up to eight hours per week Students study a primary instrument, plus music theory, music history, aural training, and singing NJYS students intern with PMP each season, serving as mentors for younger students PMP students will perform alongside NJYS at the 40 th Anniversary Concert at NJPAC
