This time we shall learn about decoding words in stories read using phonetic analysis. Let s Try This What is the sound of a hissing snake? Here are some words that begin with the same sound like a hissing snake. Read them. Read the list of phrases with words having common letter sound. Let s Study This What is this? It is a cradle. How do you read the word cradle? It carries the sound of / a / or it has a long a /ey/sound. Study the given selection. Let s Remember This What are the phonetic sounds introduced in this module? They are /s/;/a /;/sh/ ; /i/ How did you pronounce them? Remember: Vowels are letters that are pronounced by forcing air over your vocal cords through your mouth. In pronouncing the long // sound as /ey/ in day, it is the same as the name of the letter and so with /i/. But when /s/ words are said, the lips are slightly open while the teeth are closed. The sides of the tongue the inner edges of the upper teeth and a narrow stream of air escapes through the tip of the tongue and between the upper and lower teeth. In the /sh/ sound, the tongue tip may point up towards the gum ridge and it may rest behind the lower teeth. The lips are pushed forward and are rounded but this rounding and protrusion may vary with different speakers. 40
