EDITORIAL CONTENT HIGH-END TV The emergence of Netflix and other OTT services, in competition with AMC, HBO and other pioneering channels, means that TV drama upped its game. Series including Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Bloodline and others are doing the job that independent cinema was doing in the Seventies nurturing world-class talent, and telling great stories. This article looks at what has come out of California in recent years and what is set to emerge in the future. SHOOTING COMMERCIALS California s dramatic coastal highways, the deserts, dunes and dry lakes are all well used in car commercials seen all over the world. But what else in the state attracts commercials producers? This article would look at commercials production throughout California. STUDIOS AND RANCHES From North to South, California offers every type of studio facility any production could wish for. And they keep growing. Disney s Golden Oak Ranch is planning to build four-to-six new stages at the facility and has already built two new backlots. Universal has rebuilt much of its backlot after a fire and has added a new New York street. And production equipment company Cinelease is operating a studio facility in Vallejo, 30 minutes from San Francisco, at an old military property. This article looks at what new or expanded facilities are operating across the state, and who is using them. INCENTIVES California s recently established incentives programme means new productions are coming to the state and established productions are returning here. This article looks at the new incentives, who is benefiting from them and how. SEEING DOUBLE Fox s drama Rosewood, about a private pathologist, is set in Miami; TriStar/Amazon s Good Girls Revolt is set in 1970s New York and tells of how the women of Newsweek sued their bosses and changed the atmosphere of the workplace. What do they have in common? They both shot in California. This article looks at the many productions that have shot here but are set somewhere else how California can double for pretty much anywhere else in the world. MAKING A SCENE CASE STUDIES Location California talks to producers, directors, location managers and talent about their experiences shooting in California.
