International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 15 / 26 November 30 th edition IDFA, the biggest and most significant international documentary film festival in the world, takes place each November in Amsterdam. Over the past 30 years, IDFA has increased its visitor numbers every year, with a record number in 2016 of more than 276.000 visits and well over 3,000 international professionals who conduct business in Amsterdam. For this audience IDFA annually selects approximately 300 documentaries from around the world of which about 200 premier during the festival. The festival communicates with a large, divers (socially involved) audience and has media partners such as de Volkskrant [newspaper], Groene Amsterdammer [weekly news magazine], the VPRO [broadcaster] and the NPO (Dutch Public Broadcaster), but also partners that have widely established public presence such as Pathé Cinemas, Oxfam Novib [NGO] and the BankGiro Loterij [national lottery]. With media partner VICE, IDFA attracts and retains a younger audience. Furthermore, IDFA will enter into new contacts with the Correspondent [independent news site] and international media partners such as the Guardian. 1

Film Program IDFA screens documentary films that are not only artistically interesting, innovative and authentic, but also give an insight into society, broaden the horizon, and stimulate discussion and the critical eye of the audience. On the one hand, the film program consists of competitions of solely (inter)national premières, whilst, on the other, the audience program is constituted by special (themed)programs that feature films which examine urgent social themes in detail or documentaries that are interesting due to their cinematic qualities. By contextualizing the film program, IDFA creates enrichment that also contributes to the festival experience. This context is created through introductions by filmmakers, Q&A s with professionals and the audience, events, but also publications, in print and online. 3
Profile IDFA Visitor Over the recent period the festival has expanded enormously; attracting a broad, enthusiastic and loyal audience. IDFA uses its communication tools to connect with the regular audience and to reach new audiences with documentary films that are interesting for everyone who loves film and is curious about the world around them. IDFA also specifically focuses on the national audience. A considerable fan base of regulars have attended the festival five or more times (47%), with a healthy growth of first timers each year as well. IDFA wants to reach a wide audience from different backgrounds and age categories. For the coming period IDFA will pay specific attention to attracting a younger demographic: students from around the country and a more culturally diverse audience. IDFA made great steps in this direction last year with several youth programs. In the coming years, IDFA wants to put a strong emphasis on the communication towards the audience, by developing a clear vision and by implementing this in the overall communication plan of the festival. The festival will organize various events for which young public figures (writers, artists, musicians etc.) are asked to choose and promote their favorite IDFA documentary via social media. Moreover, the (media) partners will play a more intensive roll in our communication strategy. IDFA targets (inter)national documentary professionals focusing on filmmakers. These makers are established masters, but can also be talented newcomers. Special attention is paid to Dutch and European directors, those from developing countries and new media creators. The presence of these filmmakers gives added value to the audiences experience. Other professionals targeted include producers, sales agents, distributors, film fund staff, TV industry representatives such as commissioning editors, buyers, network managers, but also festival curators and the (film)press. 4
