Biography Brought together by their love of chamber music and the simple joy of playing together, captivates audiences with performances that are both visually and aurally stunning. Through compelling collaborations with composers and performers, Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum and Terry Sweeney seek to engage a wider audience for classical music. Sandbox made their New York debut in 2012 on the Concerts on the Slope series in Brooklyn. Following that performance, they accepted an invitation to become artists-in-residence of the series and have returned in each subsequent season. Later that year, Sandbox worked closely with composer James Wood on his masterpiece Village Burial with Fire at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. While at Norfolk, Sandbox played alongside the great Hungarian percussion quartet Amadinda Aurél Holló, a member of Amadinda, later said about Sandbox: With an array of skills, talent and freshness, these young artists seem to be pushing their limits up in the skies, as I realized listening to them at the Yale New Music Workshop. is the promising group of the near future, battering right on your door. Last season Sandbox gave a staggering twelve world premieres by composers such as Robert Sirota, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Crowell, Thomas Kotcheff, Alex Weiser, and Tonia Ko. Six of these premieres were by composition students at the Yale School of Music and were featured on the New Music New Haven concert series. This past Spring Sandbox, along with flutist Tim Munro, performed the world premiere of Amy Beth Kirsten s, They Might be Giants as members of a larger mixed ensemble, HOWL co-directed by Amy Beth Kirsten and Mark DeChiazza. In addition to keeping a busy concert schedule Sandbox has also participated in various masterclasses and coachings at schools such as the Peabody Conservatory, Curtis Institute, Cornell University, and Furman University. While there they coached students on some of the most pivotal works in the percussion repertoire including Steve Reich s Drumming, György Ligeti s, Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel and John Cage s Third Construction. Most recently has marked the quartet s growing interest in composition. Last season Jonathan Allen s Interlude and Victor Caccese s Chatter were featured on eleven separate programs throughout the U.S. Sandbox also worked closely with composer David Crowell on a marimba arrangement of his saxophone sextet, Point Reyes. They gave the first ever-live performance of the piece in November 2014 in Brooklyn, NY. has now reached their fifth concert season and will celebrate with a fourth return to the Concerts on Slope series in Brooklyn and a special performance of John Luther Adams Strange and Sacred Noise at Trinity Church on Wall Street. They will also make a return visit to the Peabody Conservatory and Furman University where they will coach and perform Steve Reich s monumental work, Drumming. Other highlights include a third piece written expressly for them by composer and longtime friend, Thomas Kotcheff, three separate programs at the newly opened National Sawdust in Brooklyn as well as the first ever percussion quartet concert at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. Sandbox Percussion endorses Vic Firth drumsticks and Remo drumheads.

Sample Programs Blending Old and New This program leads the audience on a journey from where percussion music has been and where it is going today. Along with classics by Steve Reich and Lukas Ligeti, it blends together new works by young talents like Thomas Kotcheff and David Crowell. Steve Reich Focus Concert This program centers around Steve Reich's 1971 masterpiece, Drumming. Scored for nine percussionists, three vocalists and a piccolo player, Drumming prominently features one of Reich's signature compositional techniques: phasing. Two players begin by playing the same rhythm on the same instrument, while one slowly accelerates until he or she is exactly one eighth note ahead of the other player. This resulting canon between the two players is a process used throughout all of Reich's music. The first half of the concert features Music for Pieces of Wood, for tuned wooden slats and Reich's recent Mallet Quartet, for two marimbas and two vibraphones. Both of these pieces demonstrate Reich s canonic elements especially well, only without the usage of phasing as in Drumming. This program works best at a university or other educational institution, as Sandbox can prepare and perform Drumming with a group of students. As part of this preparation, Sandbox can give a clinic on phasing and performing Reich's music in general. György Ligeti - Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel One unique piece in Sandbox's repertoire is Gyorgy Ligeti s Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel for mezzosoprano and percussion quartet featuring guest vocalist, Elspeth Davis. This seven-movement song cycle beautifully blends a disparate palate of percussion sounds with a vocal line that moves seamlessly between extremes in range and technique, and simple, unadorned beauty. The percussionists are asked to play traditional instruments (like marimbas and drums from all over the world), more specialized ethnic instruments (Tibetan prayer bowls and Thai gongs), and even instruments that aren t percussion instruments at all (harmonicas and recorders). As with Steve Reich's Drumming, this work can also be used as an educational launching point at a university. Ms. Davis and Sandbox can present a clinic for both the vocal and percussion departments on preparing and performing mixed chamber music with vocalists, as well as listen to and give comments on performances from both studios. They will play selections from the Ligeti and discuss its specific chamber music challenges. *This piece can be performed along with either of the sample programs listed above*

Composing for Percussion Educational Program As proponents of contemporary music, Sandbox believes that collaborating with composers to create new works for percussion is one of our most important functions. To this end, we have developed an educational program for composition departments. The details of the collaboration can be tailored to fit the needs of the department, but most residencies include a workshop on writing for percussion (including demonstrations of instruments, setups, different forms of notation, and existing repertoire) and a reading session of new works that the students have written. This educational program can be combined with any of the performance programs above. For example, an initial visit could include workshops with the percussion and composition departments and a performance of one of Sandbox's programs. Ideally a second visit a few months later could feature the premieres of new works for percussion quartet written by the composition students. In the 2014-15 season, we will give a total of eleven world premieres, six of which were composed by graduate students at the Yale School of Music. photo by Noah Stern Weber

Press The musicians of Sandbox threw themselves into the performance with the energy of youth and the precision of a well- established group, with a program that was both vibrant and exotic. - Feast of Music is clearly an energetic ensemble with imagination, integrity and courage in their music making Sandbox s mix of solid technique, musicality and showmanship ensured it was a hugely enjoyable evening all around. - I Care if You Listen With an array of skills, talent and freshness, these young artists seem to be pushing their limits up in the sky, as I realized listening to them at the Norfolk New Music Workshop. is the promising group of the near future, battering right on your door. - Aurél Holló Amadinda Percussion Group photo by Henry Chan
