(8) SOUTH KOREA: COMMENTARY South Korea was certainly Asia s most sophisticated movie market until the recent ascent of China to a position approaching that of world dominance. Certainly Korea has overtaken Japan as a market trendsetter and remains the most technologically advanced and connected country in the world, with over 90% of all households subscribing to pay-tv. The country also has the fastest-growing market in terms of accessing audiovisual content via the internet (IPTV). The problem is to come up with statistics to show how this is impacting on the film market, both theatrically and for home entertainment. On the theatrical front, the criteria for measuring releases by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) has clearly been adjusted between 2011 and 2015, presumably adding in short-window re-releases and a number of other screenings not usually counted in our release tables. So, if 1,276 films were released in Korea in 2015, we have only been able to find details on roughly a third of that figure. But, with that reliable proviso on the available evidence carrying rather more weight than usual, we can say that the theatrical business in Korea has increased noticably between 2011 and 2015, with 26% more screens open, 37% more tickets sold and box office, up 53% over the five-year period, now well past the EUR 1 billion mark. Cinemagoing is clearly popular, with a per capita attendance rate of 4.3 higher even than the US. Korean audiences prefer local films which have, according to KOFIC, an average market share of just under 55%. With the remaining 45% dominated by US movies which took four out of the Top 10 slots in 2015 there is little room for European films and even less for German ones, whose market share peaked in the five-year period surveyed at 0.74% in 2014, an exceptionally good year for German films in Korea, with 13 titles opening. Of the 36 German films released in the period covered by this report, 11 were children s films, with TARZAN 3D some way out in front in terms of box office. There was a smattering of arthouse and festival fare, notably TANZTRÄUME in 2011; VINCENT WILL MEER and BARBARA in 2013; and CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA in 2014. But none made much impact. Worth noting at the same time is the release of mainstream German films such as DIE FRISEUSE ($95,000 in 2011) and FACK JU GÖHTE ($10,500 in 2014). But the list in section (3) is still dominated by the same English-language movies that show up in Section (3) for most territories. Market Study South Korea 2011-2015, August 2016, by Split Screen for German Films 13

The distributors list in Section (4) shows only three companies Company L, Sejong Communications and Smile Ent. handling more than two German titles, with the familiar long tail of 14 smaller distributors each releasing a single German title over the period surveyed. The home entertainment business also seems more than buoyant, but since KOFIC generally restricts itself to the theatrical market, statistical information on the DVD, Blu-Ray and VOD businesses does not appear to be readily available. The prevailing belief in the Korean industry is that DVDs are on the way out, unable to compete with rampant piracy on the one hand and the fastest average broadband rates in the world on the other. In 2001, for instance, there were roughly 10,000 video rental and retail stores in Korea; within 10 years, this had shrunk to 3,500 a decline of 65%. DVD revenue appears to have plummeted even more sharply: according to a May 2011 KOFIC report, turnover had shrunk from KRW 800 billion ( 540 million) in 2002 to KRW220 billion ( 149 million) in 2008 a decline of 72.5%. This is in inverse proportion to the growth of the theatrical market over the same period. Even so, the titles available from YesAsia see Section (6) indicate better than average availability of German films for those Korean DVD-buyers who want them. (The same selection is available in Taiwan). But, with Korea still the country with the highest average internet connection speed in the world (21 Mbt/s 40% faster than nearest rival Japan), the conditions are ideal for content to be delivered by the internet, as is most of the country s TV and pay-tv programming, and as the next generation of on-demand viewing doubtless will be. The major corporations seem to be gambling on this, with the market dominated by offshoots of two of Korea s most powerful corporations: KT (Olleh) TV, owned and operated by KT Corporation (formerly Korea Telecom); and Samsung u+tv, operated by the company that supplies most of the world s smart TVs. Warner Bros., Sony and Disney have also set up their own VOD platforms but, on the basis of patterns found in other forms of home entertainment, content is likely to be 50% Korean, 45% Hollywood, with the rest of the world supplying the smallest slice of the VOD cake. German films may be left with the crumbs, but with so rich a mix these may prove far from negligible.
