Replacing the PanelMate epro PS, PanelMate epro PS EE, and PanelMate epro PS OD 7685x-12 Series Backlight Assembly Introduction The Backlight Replacement Kit provides a replacement backlight for the PanelMate epro PS 7685T-12 Series, the PanelMate epro PS EE (Enterprise Edition) 7685T-12E Series, and the PanelMate epro PS OD (Outdoor) 7685T-12OD Series. Although the figures provided are for the epro OD models, the disassembly for the epro PS and epro EE models are the same. Contents Tywrap Backlight Disposable Anti-static Wrist Strap Caution: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage static-sensitive electronic components. You should perform these procedures only at an ESD workstation. If an ESD workstation is not available, you can provide some protection by wearing an anti-static wrist strap and attaching it to a metal part of the system chassis. Warning: This procedure requires electrical and mechanical skill and should be attempted only by qualified technicians. Required Tools Phillips screwdriver size P0 and P1. Magnetic would be helpful. Nut Driver or socket size ¼ Jewelers small phillips screwdriver. Magnetic would be helpful. Small electronic cutters February 2006 Page 1 of 9 01-50605-00
Instructions for Replacing the Backlight 1. Disconnect the power source cable and any other cables from the PanelMate unit. 2. Remove the chassis cover from the electronics module by unscrewing the five screws at the back of the unit and the single screw on the connector side of the unit. See Figure 1. Screws Figure 1 3. Remove the standoffs from the four corners of the CPU circuit board. See Figure 2. Standoffs Figure 2 February 2006 Page 2 of 9 01-50605-00
4. Rotate the unit 90. Remove the screws from the power supply. See Figure 3. Power supply screws Figure 3 5. Gently lift the power supply at an angle to expose the screw underneath. See Figure 4. Remove the screw and lower the power supply back in place. Screw Figure 4 February 2006 Page 3 of 9 01-50605-00
6. Rotate the unit back 90. Remove the screws from the CPU circuit board and install one in the power supply. Also remove the screws from the touchscreen cable cover plate. Remove the cover plate and unplug the touchscreen cable from the CPU circuit board. See Figure 5. Touchscreen cable Remove screws Install screw Touchscreen cable cover plate Remove screws Cut tywrap Figure 5 7. Cut the tywrap joining the red and black wires (coming up from the bottom of the board) to the cable harness on the power supply. Be careful not to nick any of the other wires in the bundle when cutting the tywrap. Disconnect the red and black wires from the power supply. See Figure 5. 8. Gently tilt the circuit board up along the fan edge of the board and disconnect the video cable and inverter cable from the board. See Figure 6. The CPU circuit board is now free from the unit. 9. Unplug the backlight cables from the connectors on the inverter board. See Figure 7. Note: Standoffs have been placed next to the backlight connectors to prevent the cables from disconnecting from the inverter. The inverter has to be removed in order to disconnect the backlight cables. Remove the screws along the top and bottom edge of the display plate. See Figure 7. 11. Gently pull the touchscreen cable through the opening in the display plate and remove the front panel. Lay it aside. 12. Gently turn the display plate over. The display plate will rest on the remaining components still mounted on the plate. February 2006 Page 5 of 9 01-50605-00
13. Remove the four corner screws of the display. See Figure 8. Screws Figure 8 14. As you remove the display from the display plate, carefully pull the video cable and the backlight cables through their respective openings in the plate. February 2006 Page 6 of 9 01-50605-00
15. With the display facing down, remove the backlight cartridge by unscrewing the screw holding the backlight cartridge to the display. See Figure 9. Display Video cable Backlight cables Screw Figure 9 16. Gently and carefully, pull the backlight cartridge out of the display. Make sure to pull the backlight cartridge straight out. Caution: The backlight cartridge is very fragile. Any twisting or bending during removal can cause the lamps to break possibly leaving broken glass inside the display. 17. Gently and carefully, insert the new backlight cartridge into the display. Slide the backlight cartridge very carefully and straightly. Make sure not to twist or bend the cartridge. Be careful not to push or tug on the wires attached to the backlight cartridge as they are very fragile. See Figure 10. Caution: The new backlight cartridge is very fragile. Any twisting or bending during insertion can cause the lamps to break possibly leaving broken glass inside the display. February 2006 Page 7 of 9 01-50605-00

Insert the backlight cables and the video cable through their respective openings in the display plate. Make sure the excess cable is pushed through the slots to the other side of the display plate. See Figure 9 and Figure 7. 20. Reattach the display to the display plate. See Figure 8. 21. Reattach the backlight cables to the inverter board. Ensure the two wires in each connector are on either side of the small white standoffs. See Figure 7. 22. Reattach the inverter board. See Figure 7. 23. Reattach the display plate to the front panel making sure to feed the touchscreen cable through the opening in the plate. See Figure 7. Cleaning: Clean off any fingerprints or dirt that may have gotten on the inner display surface or the backside of the front panel. 24. Place the video cable back under the two cord clips. See Figure 7. 25. Tilt the board along the fan edge to reconnect the video cable and the inverter cable. See Figure 6. 26. Reinstall the CPU circuit board. See Figure 5. Caution: Ensure the cables running under the CPU circuit board are not pinched before screwing down the board. February 2006 Page 8 of 9 01-50605-00
27. Reconnect the touchscreen cable to the CPU circuit board and reattach the touchscreen cable cover plate. See Figure 5. 28. Tywrap the red and black wires (coming up from the bottom of the board) to the cable harness on the power supply. Ensure the red and black wires fit in the slot between the power connector and the metal bracket on the CPU circuit board. Reconnect the red and black wires to the power supply. Red going to the +24V screw terminal and black going to the 0V screw terminal. See Figure 5. 29. Reattach the power supply. See Figure 4 and Figure 3. 30. Reattach the standoffs in the four corners of the CPU circuit board. See Figure 2. 31. Verify that all previous connections are in place and that all wires are under the CPU circuit board. Reinstall the chassis cover. See Figure 1. 32. Connect the power source cable and any other cables.
