II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Reported Speech (5-6 minutes) General Description: Reported speech refers to a sentence that reports what someone other than the speaker has said. It is also called indirect speech. Reported speech follows certain rules that tell us what tense to use based from the reference sentence. Rule 1: If the reference sentence starts in the present, the present tense is also used in the reported sentence. Susie says, I like the smooth texture of this cloth. (reference) Susie says she likes the smooth texture of this cloth. (reported Rule 2: If the reference sentence starts in the past, the past tense is also used for the reported sentence. Susie said, I like the smooth texture of this cloth. (reference) Susie said she liked the smooth texture of this cloth. (reported) Rule 3: If the reference sentence has an expression of time, you must also change it in the reported sentence. Patty: I will buy a sewing machine next week. (reference) Patty said she would buy a sewing machine the following week. (reported) Remember: If the reference sentence starts in the past but is still true, you can eitheruse the present or past tense. Both kinds of reported speech are correct. John said, I know Mary s address. (reference) John said he knows/knew Mary s address. (reported) Examples: Ron: My brother is a tailor in Dubai. (reference) Ron said his brother is a tailor in Dubai. (reported) Ron said his brother was a tailor in Dubai. (reported) Peachy: I play the guitar on family gatherings. (reference) Peachy said she plays the guitar on family gatherings. (reported) Peachy said she played the guitar on family gatherings. (reported) Page 4
