Introducing the latest in optical fiber measurements and versatility Artisan Laboratories Corporation s hand held, battery operated Sidelighter TM optical module is the most accurate and convenient tool available for field installation, verification, troubleshooting and repair of fiber optic cables and optical communication systems. The Sidelighter TM module connects to most popular RF and microwave signal analyzers converting them into a highly accurate optical measurement system with improved performance compared to optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR). Simply connect your Sidelighter TM module to an Anritsu s Site Master TM, Scorpion TM Vector Network Analyzers, or Bird s Site Analyzer family of Cable and Antenna Tester products and you are ready make optical measurements. The Sidelighter TM module saves time and money by accurately locating failures in fiber optic cables, optical connectors and optical components. Well now you have an alternative. The Sidelighter TM will provide you with improved performance over conventional optical test equipment. The Sidelighter TM is a cost effective solution that can perform highly accurate measurements without the dead-zone associated with OTRDs.

Convenient and accurate measurements with NO DEAD ZONE The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to perform various optical measurements quickly and easily. If you are experienced in making RF and microwave measurements, you can now make optical measurements. No need to learn a new product. Fiber optic distance to fault The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to measure the distance to fault in an optical cable eliminating the dead zone that renders OTDRs useless in many applications. Faults can be found at any distance along the cable without the use of so-called dead zone eliminators. Fiber optic cable loss The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to determine the loss through an optical cable. Optical connector integrity The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to determine the integrity of optical connector interfaces. Misalignments, air-gaps or incompatible connections are easily determined. Optical component analysis The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to characterize many optical components such as power dividers, couplers, modulators and other passive components. Since the Sidelighter had no dead-zone, connecting an optical component directly to the module allow the user to determine performance parameters such as insertion loss. Fiber optic cable length measurements The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to accurately measure the length of optical cables, an important parameter for cable vendors and manufacturers. Cables, connectors, wavelengths The Sidelighter TM module allows the user to perform measurements at 1310 nm and 1550 nm in both single and multimode fibers. Measurement examples The Sidelighter TM is a versatile instrument module that allow for various diagnostics and measurements. Examples are provide showing just some of the capabilities of the Sidelighter TM. Finding faults in close proximity The graph to the right shows the location of two events separated by only 15 cm. OTDRs cannot resolve these two events. In this graph the location of connectors are shown at 500 feet, 750 feet,1000 feet and 1100 feet Finding faults at long distances The Sidelighter TM while allowing for high resolution measurements can also expose and locate faults at long distances. The graph shows two faults located at 4.9 Km due to a connector and a second fault at 31 meters away due to a reflection (performed with a VNA).
