It was the last step betwee the joys of adolescece ad the impedig axieties of adulthd. It was a time of trial ad tribulatio, of high- strug stress ad costeratio. Every miute, every hour, every day was shaped by the steps take i those high schl hallways. Every experiece was ours for the takig; every breath draw, masterpiece created, sog sug, essay writte, ad oblem fratically scribbled out o the math test durig the last t miutes of class before the bell rag was set out before us. Every memory made was the byoduct of the four years spet at Veteras Drive. Our experieces, however, were more tha just the obstacles we faced; they were the love we felt for those aroud us, the admiratio ad friedships we shared with those who istructed us, ad the ide we felt i a missio accomplished. Each day at 8:10, our day bega aew. (That was after, of course, 15 miutes spet i the Scter's drive- thru lie.) Our mids were cultivated with streuous care ad our itellect put to the test. Our days did ot ed at the resoatig toe that souded at 3:20. The came the struggle of maeuverig out of the parkig lot, followed by the hours of homerk or babysittig, ckig dier or rkig. That, of course, came secod to the sports or play actices, ad the stayig late for extra assistace. How we spet our days became how we spet our lives, ad our days cosisted of the labors of love eseted i each task set before us. Although our schl was laid i cocrete ad brick, our futures were ot so; they were the fluid stuff of dreams, a udetermied aspiratio. Our schl was ot made of such stuff as our hearts may have bee. Each day, with each ew callig heard, each perso had the ability to grab his future by the hors. Each day, he could make his future his ow. Each day, he could say... But that first day came, ad with it came the eageress of relivig a steady, edictable life ad the dread of homerk ad sleep deivatio. For the secod year i a row, this schl year was beckoed i by a plague of mishap ad miscommuicatio, all for the sake of ogress. The tech lab, which used to sit idle ad uused, save for a loely iter ad some dusty om decoratios, became a thig of the past as it was trasformed ad reimagied ito five ew classrms ad t smaller study rms. The widows that used to stad watch over the seior balcoy were take dow ad rebuilt i the stadard brick- ad- mortar fashio that the rest of the hallways bore. Studets were i a daze as they attempted to search for their classrms, some that housed familiar teachers, others that became home to oe of 13 friedly ew faces. Each ew faculty member ad studet became ve ito the itricate fabric of the day to day life at EHS. Though the schl was old, it had a reewed sese to it. Though eve seiors foud the rerked layouts to be a cofusig labyrith, withi the blik of a eye, studets ad faculty oce agai felt at home. With the chagig of the autum leaves came a divisive electio. Frieds bickered ad debated, some liberal, some coservative. t at the ed of week, differeces were set aside. Whether blue or red i political affiliatio, the fluorescet mazes ad chilly classrms became seas of red as studets gathered behid the boys that played uder the Friday ight lights ad showed the ieffable ide they felt for their schl. With every ewcomer ad every old dog, every studet ad staff member, a path was laid before them: decisios yet to be made, memories yet to be lived, tears of mourig or pure elatio yet to drip dow their rosy cheeks. Every act of kidess or lack thereof was yet udecided to be. But whatever hidde facets of the ew schl year that were still udetermied, each uld have a outcome that uld impact the idividual ad the etire schl body. Each studet had a story to tell ad it was his choice whether or ot to share it. Every year, TA metors taught the freshme the rules of a favorite Friday activity. "I TA, they were talkig about seated volleyball ad it made me axious to lear how to play," Goig said. Although freshma Susa Parlor, got a tour, she still got lost o the first day. It was very cofusig whe I walked ito the wrog classrm, I felt so lost, Parlor said. I forgot everythig I leared o my tour ad I could't fid my locker util the maybe teth day of schl. "Because I was ew to the schl ad ot just the rm, I felt stressed by the fact that schl was startig i a few days ad my rm was still iaccessible," Brow said. "However, each day I stopped by, more was doe which lesseed my stress a little." Despite the cofusio, studets figured out where they eeded to go. I four places throughout the U.S., grey plumes of smoke uld shroud those crystal clear blue skies. "We have both atteded cofereces eviously but this year it was much more itese ad a much differet atmosphere ow that we are i high schl," Weelborg said ad Hate agreed.
