Douglas Anderson School of the Arts A Duval County Public High School Entrance Requirements Acceptance to Douglas Anderson is by audition only. Students must be at an intermediate skill level or above. Parents/Students must have completed and submitted Online Application. Two recommendations are required. Print two Recommendation forms from DA s website and give to instructor(s) familiar with your art s progress. Recommendations should be mailed to DA Admissions before the audition. A copy of the student s most recent report card must be submitted. A 2.0 Grade Point Average is required. Florida law requires a minimum 2.0 grade point average for participation in state performances, which includes All-State, State Thespians, gallery showings, and other school-related activities. Your audition will include an interview in addition to other arts area requirements. Additional Contractual Agreements All arts areas require fair share contributions. The amount varies among arts areas and performance groups. (Fundraising opportunities are provided for all students to earn the fair share.) Additional area-specific requirements that affect a student s grade may be contracted. These might include, but are not limited to, attendance at all rehearsals. All students are required to critique one in-school and one outside-of-school arts event each quarter. All students are required to take the core required courses in their arts area curriculum. Transportation The Duval County School System currently provides buses from all neighborhood high schools to and from Douglas Anderson. Academic Offerings Douglas Anderson offers a rigorous academic curriculum, which includes honors courses, Dual Enrollment classes, and eighteen Advanced Placement courses. The advanced intensive arts curriculum includes visual arts, dance, vocal and instrumental music (including classical guitar and classical piano), cinematic arts, creative writing, and theatre (including performance, technical, and musical theatre). A minimum of twelve arts courses are required. Upon graduation, students earning the twelve Arts credits receive an Arts Seal on their diploma. Traditional elective courses are not offered with the exception of World Language classes.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Cinematic Arts Prior to the audition, the applicant must produce a 2-minute narrative video and/or script that he/she has created that demonstrates his/her talent and skills in visual storytelling. If doing a film, it should be written, shot, and edited by the student, and delivered at the time of the audition as a digital file (mp4, mov) on a flash drive or a playable DVD-R. If you bring your film on DVD, make sure that it plays on a DVD player prior to your audition date. Film/Script Prompt: Lost and Found. The main character loses something but what is lost is later found. In your story, your main character should be confronted with a problem or challenge, and then solve it in a courageous or clever way. o Note: Your film must be delivered as a digital file (H.264/mp4) or on DVD-R Additionally, the applicant will be asked to give a 2 to 3-minute Presentation using PowerPoint or Prezi platforms. You may save your presentation as a pdf file for the audition or you may bring the file and its contents to the audition in order to present. The presentation during the audition MUST contain the following material: 1. Applicant Introduction: Name, grade, and the name of the school you are coming from. Discuss the skills that you perceive to be your best qualities in filmmaking. Answer the question: Why do you want to be a part of the Cinematic Arts program? 2. Film/Script Introduction: Title and themes in the film If you have produced a film play the film (2 minutes in maximum length) 3. Concept Design: Along with your film/script, the applicant will produce and present a movie poster for their audition film. o Discuss the elements of the poster for your film and how it helps to visually attract an audience to see your film. o Posters can be saved as jpeg, pdf, or psd files and incorporated into the presentation. Classical Guitar Guitar applicants shall perform two selections on a classical guitar. At least one selection should be from the standard classical guitar repertoire, such as Carcassi, Giuliani, Tarrega, Sor, or Bach. Applicants shall be prepared to perform two octave major scales in all 12 keys. Guitar applicants will be required to sight read a short selection. Creative Writing Creative writing applicants should bring a portfolio of three to five examples of the student s best writing. The pieces should have undergone careful revision either by the student on his/her own or with an instructor. They should represent the student s strongest work in at least two genres (e.g., fiction, poetry, essay). The audition will include an on-demand writing as well as a written reaction to a published work. Please come prepared to write by bringing a pen and paper. Adjudicators will be looking for a thoughtful, honest expression of ideas that reveals expertise in language and insight into literature. Portfolios should be typed. Students should include only copies of work in the portfolio--not originals. As is common practice with university creative writing departments, student portfolios will not be returned. The quality of the creative writing is most important. Please do not include academic work, drawings or visual images in or on the portfolio. Do not send your portfolio with the application. Bring portfolios with you to the audition. Dance Dance applicants should be prepared to participate in a 1½- to 2-hour dance class, which will consist of ballet, modern dance, and compositional phrases. The student should wear appropriate dress as follows: Ladies--Black leotard, pink tights*, and ballet shoes. Dancers should bring pointe shoes if they have them. Hair should be worn in a traditional, classical, ballet bun with hair slicked back without lumps or geometric patterns. If hair is too short for a bun, it must be pinned, clipped, or gelled back, flat to the head. Gentlemen--Black leotard or tank top with tights* or sweat pants, and ballet shoes. Hairstyle should be short, neat, with no braids. * Tights should be convertible for modern dance. Instrumental Music String applicants (Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass): I. Two Scales: Prepare two major scales and arpeggios according to ability. The scales must be at least two octaves. At least one of the scales must require shifting. II. Two Solos: Prepare two pieces of contrasting style lasting approximately two minutes each. Classical music such as unaccompanied suites and partitas, sonatas, concertos, and most selections from the Suzuki books are acceptable. You may also play the Florida Orchestra Association s All-State Orchestra Audition etude and excerpt. An accompanist is not needed for the audition. III. One Sight Reading: You will be asked to play an excerpt lasting approximately 8 measures, according to your ability. You will be given 15 seconds to review the excerpt before you play it.

Applicants may find solo string literature at local music stores or through online vendors, such as sharmusic.com or lucksmusic.com. Additionally, free music that is in the public domain can be found at imslp.org. Please call the DA front desk for further assistance. Woodwind and Brass applicants: IV. Scales: Applicants are expected to perform all 12 major scales, multiple octaves when appropriate, with arpeggios, and their chromatic scale, throughout the natural range of his/her instrument as per FBA All-State audition requirements. II. Two Etudes: Performing the Florida Bandmasters Association All-State Band audition music (lyrical and technical etudes) would be appropriate. Those requirements can be found by clicking on the All-State tab at 22Twww.flmusiced.org/fba 22T. Students should audition on the current year s All-State material for their current grade level. Performing the All-State music for your audition is preferable; however, applicants may choose to perform two contrasting FBA-approved solos or method book excerpts of their choice. Etude books or solos may be purchased from any sheet music vendor. Music from your band class is not deemed appropriate for this audition. III. One Sight Reading: You will be asked to play an excerpt lasting approximately 16 measures, according to your ability. You will be given 30 seconds to review the excerpt before you play it. Percussion applicants: I. Scales: Applicants are expected to perform all 12 major scales, multiple octaves when appropriate, with arpeggios, and their chromatic scale, on xylophone or marimba as per All-State audition requirements. II. Three Etudes: The student must prepare three selections of contrasting style to demonstrate the student s ability on snare drum, xylophone or marimba, and timpani. The pieces should be selected using All-State requirements for their current grade level. Those requirements can be found by clicking on the All State tab at 22Twww.flmusiced.org/fba 22T. Performing the All-State music for your audition is preferable; however, applicants may choose to perform three contrasting selections or movements of their choice. Timpani, xylophone, and snare drum will be provided. Percussionists shall provide their own mallets, drumsticks, etc. Etude books or solos may be purchased from any sheet music vendor. Music from your band class is not deemed appropriate for this audition. III. One Sight Reading: You will be asked to play a xylophone excerpt lasting approximately 16 measures, according to your ability. You will be given 30 seconds to review the excerpt before you play it. Piano Care should be given to choose a repertoire that successfully demonstrates the student s technical and musical stage of development. Applicants must perform in person two contrasting, original (no simplified arrangements) classical (not popular) solo compositions. Freshmen must be at the ability level to learn J.S. Bach s Inventions upon admission. Music for the two selections should be brought to the audition; however, compositions must be played from memory. Applicants should be able to play simultaneously with both hands all major scales (two or four octaves), a chromatic scale, and as many minor scales as the student knows. Applicants will be asked to sight read. Applicants should bring a repertoire list of major works covered the last three years of piano study.

Theatre A) PERFORMANCE THEATRE 1. The applicant will perform a memorized monologue from a published play lasting no more than TWO minutes. The monologue should come from a modern American play written after 1910. The actor should attempt to create a character and to identify emotionally with the character and the words. The actor should understand what they are saying and to whom they are speaking. The actor should be able to demonstrate physical choices appropriate to the piece. The applicant should wear clothing that is suitable for a job interview that also allows for character movement during the monologue. Monologues can be found at any public library, online or copies can be picked up from the Douglas Anderson Main Office. Some examples of age appropriate monologues include: For a Male Marcus Is Walking by Joan Ackerman in the role of Henry. For a Female The Diary Of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (based on the book by Anne Frank) in the role of Anne. 2. The student will be interviewed. B) MUSICAL THEATRE In ADDITION to the monologue detailed above, the students auditioning for Music Theatre will also do the following: 1. The applicant will perform 16 bars of a song from the American musical theatre repertoire. Some composers to consider include Jerry Herman, Harold Arlen, Lerner & Loewe, Cy Coleman and Irving Berlin, but any song from a produced musical is acceptable. Please provide either sheet music or a recording with only music (no words) to play for your song. An accompanist will be provided. The song should spotlight the vocal strengths and range of the student as well as his/her acting abilities. Please do not perform a rock-and-roll or rap song 2. The student will be taught and expected to perform a short dance combination. The dance combination will target the student s ability to learn and accurately perform a new combination with proper technique. The student should wear clothes that allow them to dance. 3. The student will be interviewed. C) TECHNICAL THEATRE The student is required to bring two individual projects that he/she has produced. One of the two items must be based off a play the student has read. Instructors will be looking for original design ideas and how those ideas were implemented in at least two of the following areas: Scenic Design- If your strength is with 3D spaces, read a short play and create a basic set design for that play. Bring in a scale model or a color sketch of the set based on the needs of the play and the historic time period in which the play is set. Costume Design- If your strength is understanding people and how what they wear reflects their personality, read a short play and create a costume design for a few of the characters. Bring in some color drawings of figures wearing costumes appropriate for the play along with research images based on the needs of the play and the historic time period in which the play is set. Sewing- If you can sew, bring in a garment or a theatrical costume that you have sewn yourself. Carpentry- If you work with wood, bring something you have built that shows measuring, sawing, and construction skills such as a small piece of furniture, a unique bird house, or a unique wood craft project or sculpture. Painting- If you can paint, bring in a painting you have done for art class or better yet, create a new

painting of a material such as marble, stone, or wood. Properties- If you are good at making random objects look like something new and different, bring in a product such as fake food, a magic staff, or record player that you have created using different objects and materials and painted to look like the real thing. Successful projects reflect individual effort, skill, and creativity. Examples of group work or photographs of theatrical productions you have worked on are acceptable as an addition to the two individual works. During the personal interview, discussion will revolve around the student s work, creativity, previous theatre experience, and ability to express and communicate ideas. The student will take a short quiz on basic technical theatre terms and shop math. Visual Arts What to Bring: Portfolio containing a minimum of three works of art 1 original self-portrait with hat including head, neck, and shoulder from direct observation using a mirror; completed on your own time (non-class assignment); any medium; completed wihtin the last month. 2nd and 3rd pieces should be art work from class assignments; any medium; completed within the last year. Suggested subjects are figure drawings, cityscapes, perspective drawings, and still life drawings. What will happen: You will be asked to do a pencil drawing on 18" x 24" paper from a still life in the audition classroom. You will be interviewed by an auditioner. The interview will include a discussion of your work. You may be asked to explain assignment instructions, materials, art processes, and the strengths and weaknesses of the piece. You will be asked to write a one-page critique that includes 3 paragraphs, describing, analyzing, and interpreting a reproduction of an artwork. Vocal Music Vocal Music applicants will perform one of the following selections: The Star Spangled Banner America (My Country Tis of Thee) Lift Every Voice and Sing Amazing Grace All auditions should be performed from memory. The applicant may bring his/her own accompanist, or one will be provided by the school. Should a copy of the musical selection be needed, please call the school at 346-5620 ext. 101 to request that one be mailed to you. Applicants may not sing a cappella.

In addition to the audition piece, applicants should be prepared to perform a vocalise/warm-up (as directed by the voice faculty), demonstrate their skills in tonal recall (after the playing of three to five random pitches the auditioner sings it back on la ), and be able to sight read rhythmic and Melodic examples.

DOUGLAS ANDERSON SCHOOL OF THE ARTS STUDENT/PARENT CONTRACT Student Name (Print): Grade: The Douglas Anderson School of the Arts program is designed to meet the artistic and academic educational needs of students accepted into the program who are seeking intensive arts study. Since support of the special needs of the DA program is essential, it is necessary for parents and students to understand and agree to the following: The student must abide by all rules of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts that can be found in the Douglas Anderson Student Handbook, the Duval County Code of Student Conduct, and dress and conduct guidelines established by the Duval County School Board, faculty, students, and parents. The student must comply with the specific requirements of the selected arts program, of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, and of Duval County Public Schools. Failure to comply may result in the student being placed on probation and eventual dismissal from the school. Students who do not maintain a 2.0 GPA will be placed on probation and will not be able to participate in arts area performances or exhibits. (Refer to school policies for specifics.) A student who withdraws from DA at any time during the school year will not be allowed to re-enter during that year. A fair share is required from each student in every art area to help fund performances, workshops, master classes, etc., i.e. expenses of above and beyond basic class expenses. Opportunities to raise funds to cover a student s fair share payments are provided by each art area s supporting booster group. Parents need to participate in the art area s booster organization to be aware of specific requirements and to have input into policies and procedures of that arts area. An additional contract with art area specific rules must be signed by each student prior to participation in any of the performing arts groups. For example: Dance students must have complete dress attire as described in guidelines given to students by dance teachers. A complete physical exam following their acceptance to the dance program is required. Students who are members of performance groups are expected to attend required rehearsals and performances. Students who do not satisfy this requirement may not perform, and course grades in that area may be affected as a result. Students are required to take all required core arts courses in their arts area. For example, in Music, the required core courses are Music Theory, Keyboard, Music History, and AP Music Theory.
